Growing from Grief; The Power of Vulnerability for Grievers and Their Supporters

Growing from Grief; The Power of Vulnerability for Grievers and Their Supporters

Grief and loss are an inevitable part of life, but it can be overwhelming and challenging to navigate. In this episode, we're talking to Transformational Coach and Certified Grief Educator Suzanne Jabour. As a grieving mother she has found meaning in her loss by helping others who have experienced loss and those who are caring for them. We'll explore the importance of providing meaningful support and understanding for those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. We'll delve into actionable advice, key takeaways, and the power of connection and openheartedness in dealing with grief.

    Key Takeaways:

    • It's important to offer tangible expressions of support, such as hosting a gathering or performing a specific task, rather than relying on platitudes or productivity models.
    • Grieving is a normal and healthy part of life that requires proper support and witnessing.
    • Taking action and providing meaningful support is crucial, but platitudes and cliches can do more harm than good.
    • Letting the griever know that you're there to listen and witnessing  their pain and sorrow is the best way to help.

    Actionable Advice:

    • Practice connection and openness in supporting those who are grieving.
    • Offer tangible expressions of support to show you care.
    • Seek professional advice when necessary.
    • Seek  community and connection, we are not meant to do life alone.
    • Start conversations about grief and loss with your social circles to promote understanding and empathy while the stakes are low. Develop the language to navigate grief before the trauma is too great.

Grief and loss is inevitable,  it requires action, empathy, and connection. By offering meaningful support and understanding to those who are grieving, we can help them find comfort and navigate through the grieving process. Avoiding platitudes and offering tangible expressions of support can be helpful, as can seeking professional advice when necessary. By starting conversations about grief and loss with our social circles, we can promote empathy and understanding, and support those who are grieving in a meaningful way. Remember, grief is a normal and healthy part of life, and by being there for those who are grieving, we can make a real difference.

Let’s get Hygge for the Holidays

Let’s get Hygge for the Holidays

    Who needs a hygge?

Pronounced “hoo-guh,” the word “hygge” refers to Denmark’s longstanding tradition of comfort. Warmth, family, relaxation, hygge covers it all. So what is it exactly? What rituals and traditions are considered hygge? While the answers to those questions depend on who’s asking, this lifestyle is accessible to everybody.

Today, with holidays on the horizon, we’re talking hygge with Diane in Denmark. Diane is a Scottish transplant to Denmark who has embraced the Danish lifestyle and has helped others do so through her routine coaching. Ever wonder why Denmark is the happiest country? Grab some cocoa, cozy up, and find out with some good old-fashioned New World Normal.

    Topics covered:

    • What is “hygge” exactly?
    • How can we bring hygge into our daily lives, year-round?
    • The commodification of hygge, and why hygge can’t be bought
    • Where does comfort meet mindfulness?
    • The contributing factors to Denmark’s happiness

A Juicy Talk With Juicy AF

A Juicy Talk With Juicy AF

Just one drink. Harmless, right? Not always, even one drink can be a problem for many people. Here at TNWN, we keep things nonjudgmental, but educational. The truth is, alcohol isn't for everybody. Sometimes, even a glass of wine can physically, mentally, and socially destroy a person. When it gets to this point, what are our options?

Today's guest, Kay Allison, is an entrepreneur and founder of Juicy AF (Alcohol Free), a community of women who have elected to take an intentional approach to alcohol consumption. Kay has been "AF" since 1999, and her program has helped women put the bottle down, reimagine their identities, and improve their lives.

    Topics covered:

    • Social drinking and how to handle the pressure and odd reactions when opting out
    • Does alcohol really help anxiety, or make it worse?
    • What to do instead of drinking?
    • How can we rewrite ourselves and our stories to serve us?

All in the family, no really ALL of us

All in the family, no really ALL of us

When we think of “family,” a specific image usually comes to mind. Something reinforced on TV since the 50s, an ideal man and a picturesque woman with two wholesome children. It’s neat and tidy, but a tidy family is not real. We can do everything “right,” but the idea of “family” was never meant to fit neatly into a box. Today’s guest reminds us that, no matter what our family looks like, we’re doing ok.

Amy Stone is a family coach who specializes in quieting the chaos that can come with a blended family. In today’s episode, we will discuss her work, the different forms a family can take, and how to balance it all.

    Topics covered:

    • How can your partner’s ex be your greatest childcare ally?
    • Why divorce doesn’t need to be terrible
    • Observing holidays across multiple families and events
    • The impact of language and emotional connotations on our familial relationships

    Arranging Your (Own) Death

    Arranging Your (Own) Death

Author’s note for the head honchos: I really liked “Death Becomes Her” as a title!

We’ve heard from many coaches on this podcast. Life coaches, finance coaches, business coaches, but who’s ever heard of a death coach? Everybody does it, but many of us get nervous when speaking about death. We still have plenty of years, why should we rush into all these gloomy documents? Today’s guest, Julia DeCaneva, sheds light on the stigma and offers solutions.

Julia is a cancer survivor with a knack for organization. She spent some time as a professional home organizer, which would later carry into her work as a coach in mindfulness. She now works as a death doula to help us make the most out of our lives and, by extension, our deaths.

    Topics covered:

    • Intentional living and how it makes our deaths better
    • Why we should talk about sickness while we’re well
    • The importance of saving your passwords!
    • How can organization and decluttering ease our passing?

    Disrupting Capitalism with Nora Rahimian

    Disrupting Capitalism with Nora Rahimian

“To get something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done.”

We hear this phrase often, used in the context of relationships, business ventures, travels, and so forth. It applies well to this podcast, because if we want a new experience, we have to take risks. One phrase we hear a little less often is “anti-capitalist business coach.” Today’s guest, Nora Rahimian, is exactly that.

Nora works with creatives and businesses, guiding them in a way that sounds counterintuitive at first. After all, business and capitalism are synonymous. How can a business coach be an anti-capitalist? As we find out in our discussion with Nora, it’s not actually as complicated as it may seem.

    Topics covered:

    • How can a business be anti-capitalist?
    • What does success look like for an anti-capitalist business?
    • How the system has been “personalized” so its failures feel like our own
    • Our misunderstanding of the government’s goals in a capitalist society
    • Where is our power, how can we change minds?

    Recovering From Shame and Addiction

    Recovering From Shame and Addiction

Addiction is hard to approach in a discussion. Many of us have been in a situation where a conversation turns towards the topic and our instinct is panic. We might change the subject, we might nod politely, but we usually aren’t ready for this talk. The Normal we’ll be focusing on today is arguably as destructive as addiction itself: Shame. Our guest, Brianne Davis, shares her story and discusses what she’s been doing to combat the stigma.

Brianne Davis is well-known for her illustrious Hollywood career, but she’ll be speaking to us in a different capacity today. In recovery for the last 12 years, Brianne has written a book about her experience, started a podcast, and works as a sober coach. She reflects with us on the destructive power of shame. What keeps us and our loved ones from reaching out when it’s most needed? More importantly, what can we do about it?

    Topics covered:

    • Brianne is candid with us about her personal experiences and shares her recovery process
    • Why is it so hard for addicts to reach out?
    • Stifling vs sharing our struggles
    • Turning our struggles into strategies

The Climb to a Connected Soul

The Climb to a Connected Soul

In Greek mythology, humans used to exist in literal pairs. Four arms, four legs, two heads, two hearts. Zeus separated them into the body as we know it today because he feared the power of a unified whole. This is an allegory for soulmates, but in modern society it almost seems to apply to individuals. We lose touch with ourselves. The white noise of society gets loud and it’s hard to hear our own inner voices. This disconnect can leave us feeling empty, exhausted, or even just “off.” Sound familiar? Then perhaps you could benefit from the work of today’s guest, Allyn Reid.

As the first Fillipina to summit Kilimanjaro, Allyn has had a life of adventure. She’s produced a film, founded a highly-lauded conference for entrepreneurs, and now she’s moved into soulwork. Society tends to stick us inside a box. Allyn’s work connects folks from all walks of life to their inner self, which is often found far beyond the box.

    Topics covered:

    • Allyn’s life experiences that lead her to soulwork
    • Why is it easier to treat symptoms rather than address the root problem?
    • What does it take for us to realize there’s a disconnect?
    • Why one size doesn’t fit all, and “neurodivergent” people may be a little less divergent than we are led to believe

Will Value - Based Spending Save Our Future?

Will Value - Based Spending Save Our Future?

It’s the root of all evil, but is it really? Money is like any scarce resource. It can inspire confusion, lies, fights, hoarding, and bring out the ugliest parts of humanity. However, money is ultimately a neutral force. Nobody can live without it, and most people would do wonderful things given enough money. However, in spite of its importance to all, our culture has an awkward time talking about it. Today’s guest would like to change that.

Eileen Joy, the Money Coach for Moms, went from complete bankruptcy to a comfortable life as a financial coach. Of course, it took plenty of hard work and determination, but stability is not an impossible goal for anybody. Eileen wants to empower both mothers and children with a financial education, so they can navigate a world that’s historically left them in the dark. The first step to financial empowerment is to grow beyond our negative associations with wealth and to bust the stigma. What is a “money mindset,” and how can our money finally start working for us?

    Topics covered:

    • Some surprisingly easy ways to begin growing money
    • Always go over your bills.
    • What exactly is “Keeping up with the Joneses?”
    • How well are the Joneses even doing?
    • “Cash Energy” vs “Digital Energy,” and why we should know our way around both

Ism's and Syndromes and Labels - Oh My

Ism's and Syndromes and Labels - Oh My

“Live your truth,” we’re told by our society, and it’s a wonderful message. However, the unspoken expectation is that our truth needs to be beautiful on social media, it has to compare with other people’s truths, and it must represent the values of our employers. It’s a contradictory expectation, and we must grow beyond it. There’s a cognitive dissonance in our culture, and today’s guest is doing her best to disrupt that dissonance.

Melissa Chureu is a neurodivergent attorney and life coach who has been doing groundbreaking work in bringing mindfulness to an unexpected place: the legal sector. In a field of frequent toxicity, it isn’t easy to practice self care or meditation. Melissa speaks about her mindfulness practices and how we can live our lives presently and peacefully in a world that isn’t always peaceful.

    Topics covered:

    • Representing ourselves to the fullest in all facets of our lives
    • What do we do when we can’t turn off the TV and avoid the news?
    • Imposter syndrome, and why it isn’t entirely the “imposter’s” fault
    • Introducing unique self-care practices into the justice system

    Sit Back and Get Uncomfortable

    Sit Back and Get Uncomfortable

As the world slowly recovers from the pandemic, we once again venture out into our communities, settle back into our routines, and return to our regularly-scheduled broadcasting as well as we can. Though any TNWN listener could tell you that “normal” isn’t always a good thing and that our own comfort doesn’t equate to someone else’s, today we will be examining why in more specific detail with our guest, Kerri Kelly.

Kerri Kelly is an activist for wellness, a yoga instructor, and a catalyst for change in her communities. She’s also the host/founder of the podcast/initiative CTZNWELL, promoting the idea that we must democratize wellness in order for all of us to truly thrive. Her upcoming book, American Detox: The Myth of Wellness and How We Can Truly Heal, is an extension of that work. Settle in and get uncomfortable, because sometimes it takes a little discomfort to grow and heal a community.

    Topics Covered:

    • How do we recondition ourselves to avoid the pitfalls of normalcy?
    • Creating a culture of accountability
    • Recovering as a community from wide-scale traumas like 9/11 or a pandemic
    • How do the relationships within our community help us grow, personally?
    • What are the limits of allyship as we know it? Can we do better?

    Our Future is an Expedition

    Our Future is an Expedition

When a problem is too big for an individual to handle, it’s easy to get stuck and to feel apathetic. For instance, we can commit to curbing our plastic use by eliminating straws. However, on an individual level we also understand that this choice is only our own. The rest of the world will keep using straws. What’s the point? This is why, in nature and in society, humans occasionally require support and a like-minded collective in order to accomplish big things.

In today’s episode we speak with a like-minded disruptor, Sunniva Sorby. As a Norwegian-Canadian environmental advocate, Sunniva is an inspired individual with a special place in her heart for the poles. She’s taken the initiative to get involved with her passions in any way possible, like being in the first group of women to ski to the South Pole, traveling to the U.S. in solidarity during a major election, and taking part in scientific expeditions to gather valuable climate data. Our environment currently has an expiration date. Sunniva feels this urgency, and works to educate and inspire others to reevaluate their priorities and take action on climate change.

    Topics covered:

    • How the effects of climate change can be observed in our day-to-day lives
    • How can we possibly be optimistic about climate change?
    • Why would anybody ever ski to the South Pole?
    • The best ways to get involved in the scientific community as a layperson
    • How is the global community like an expedition?

Put some hygge in your workflow

Put some hygge in your workflow

The dreadful treadmill of office culture looms before us as COVID restrictions lift. Back to the normal life of commuting away from our families, back to Monday through Friday spent under harsh fluorescent lights, back to the 9-5 grind that can absorb more time than “9-5” implies. With a taste of work-from-home independence, many have realized that “normal” wasn’t working for them. So what now? Today we chat with Kimberly Crossland, a business coach who founded Roadpreneur and Cruisin’ and Campfires.

Kimberly’s unique exposure to Denmark’s well-balanced workplace culture left her with a different idea of “normal,” one that would surprise most Americans. Upon her return to the country, Kimberly knew there was a better way to work. As a result, she built her businesses around the idea that people should be able to have it all: A good job, flexibility, family, travel, and the joy that comes with it.

    Topics covered:

    • Kimberly tells her entrepreneurial story, beginning in Denmark and culminating in two successful businesses
    • Where does America’s workplace culture fall short?
    • Setting boundaries with ourselves when we’re self-employed
    • How do you pronounce “hygge?”
    • The benefits of social media

    Burn Out to Burning Purpose

    Burn Out to Burning Purpose

Sometimes we feel like our work has no impact on the world around us. It keeps coming back fresh every day, it keeps us from what we truly love, but it also keeps the lights on. How do we break out of this mundane, exhausting cycle? The first step to social disruption is squashing the stale standards we set for ourselves. Geri Paige Butner, today’s guest, is a living example of this.

Geri is a business coach who found her niche in the wake of the pandemic after leaving her corporate job and going on a journey of self-discovery. Burned out and looking for purpose, Geri noticed that she was not the only one reflecting on her life and work in this way. Many others had found that the 9-5 culture was holding them back and that they were ready to find something new. Like the old saying goes, “if you want something you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done.”

    Topics covered:

    • Geri shares her journey from office burnout to doing what she loves
    • Asking ourselves the important and often difficult questions to further our own happiness
    • How COVID was a catalyst in building stronger communities
    • Changing attitudes towards traditional 9-5 jobs
