    Complex Trauma Impacts Brain Development

    Complex Trauma Impacts Brain Development

“Impaired integration is such a hallmark of the traumatized brain. It disrupts our ability to balance our nervous system. Neurobiologist Dan Siegel says that at its very essence, the purpose of trauma therapy is to restore brain integration.”

On today’s episode, co-hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness discuss the neurological impacts of trauma, specifically how disassociation and fragmentation affect our brain integration. They’re joined by Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro and co-founder of the Neuro-Somatic Intelligence Coaching Certification Program.

Expect to understand more about how early childhood trauma results in brain dysfunction, shapes our basic functioning and filtration systems, and can overpower the cognitive mind. You’ll also learn what reintegrating memories actually means, and why integration is the key to healing.

Trauma Rewired has mentioned many times that without integration, long-lasting change is difficult, but without the survival brain and emotional brain working together, integration, specifically vertical integration, is impossible. This may sound overwhelming, but the good news change IS possible because of neuroplasticity.

If you want a deep understanding of vertical integration and how trauma affects the developing brain, tune in to learn more!

Tune in to hear how neurosomatic intelligence can help get you to integrate and regulate your nervous system!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Defining complex trauma from a neurosomatic perspective

    • Effects of trauma on brain development

    • Dissociation and fragmentation of self

    • Memory integration and why people feel “stuck”

    • Real examples of trauma responses overpowering their cognitive brain

    • Dissociating from the different parts of your self

    • What is vertical integration?

    • How developmental trauma affects vertical integration
    • Dysregulation between the brains left and right hemispheres

    • The SAID Principle in realtion to nervous system imbalance

    Dissociation

    Dissociation

Dissociation is one way that our brain keeps us safe from things that may cause us stress or harm. Whether it’s a simple moment of daydreaming or constant state of dissociation in an abusive relationship, being cognitively and physically disconnected is not conducive to healing.

During this episode of Trauma Rewired, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss the spectrum of dissociation and how it can affect the interoceptive system, or how we process and send information to the brain. They go over the symptoms of dissociation, sharing their personal experiences of dissociation related to childhood trauma.

Our survival brain sees healing as a threat, but there are ways to rehab the deficits in the nervous system to give more clear information to the brain, helping us to think and see more clearly. For example, training our interoceptive system can fight our hypersensitivity to threats and bring us out of disassociation.

To learn what tools can help you retrain your nervous system and the learned conditioned responses that are no longer serving you, tune in to this episode!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Misconceptions about dissociation

    • The definition of dissociation and its symptoms

    • Dissociation as a protective mechanism

    • How the interoceptive system works

    Historical Trauma and Attachment

    Historical Trauma and Attachment

What role does our ancestral history play in our attachment styles, and mental health as a whole? Joining us on the show to help answer this question is Dr. Jennifer Mullen, a psychologist, educator, and author of “Decolonizing Therapy!”

Traditional therapy focuses on the individual, but decolonizing therapy puts forth the concept that understanding one's historical trauma and the current socio-political context can lead to deeper healing. And without a safe place to explore these traumas, affected populations don’t have the same opportunity to heal themselves and their relationships.

In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Mullen dives into the impact colonization and our ancestral wounds have on our attachment, sense of belonging, and emotional expression. She covers topics like migration trauma, separation from your ancestral lands (referred to as the original attachment wound), and how our current culture perpetuates deep-seated intergenerational traumas that have a profound effect on the body and nervous system.

Curious to learn more? Tune into our full conversation on decolonizing therapy now!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • The trauma of separation from family and land

    • How societal and cultural beliefs shape our attachment

    • What drove her work in decolonizing therapy

    • Sacred rage and how to safely process it

    • The importance of emotional expression

The Fluidity of Attachment Styles and the Capacity to create more security

The Fluidity of Attachment Styles and the Capacity to create more security

When a child’s needs aren’t being met by their caregiver, by not being fed or feeling safe, they develop a distorted view of relationships. This attachment schema is the lens through which they examine the behavior of others, impacting their ability to form relationships and lead a healthy, happy life.

In past episodes, hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have talked about connection being one of our survival needs, but an insecure attachment directly challenges this need. Being close to others, feeling vulnerable and connected, can also be very dysregulating to those who learned to survive with unemotional or unreliable caregivers.

So, how can you overcome your learned patterns to create healthy relationships with yourself and others? The answer is nervous system training.

In this episode, Jennifer and Elisabeth will walk you through attachment schema, how the three insecure attachment styles develop and show up as behavioral outputs, and how nervous system regulation has helped them work toward lasting change.

Tune in for all this and more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Attachment style from the NSI perspective

    • How insecure attachment schema affects social development

    • Nervous system regulation as a way to change our patterns

    • The areas of the brain responsible for creating neuro tags

    • How the 3 insecure attachment styles develop and are expressed

    • Misconceptions about avoidant attachment style

    • Disorganized attachment and complex trauma

Our Relationship to Society Impacts Our Relationship To Self

Our Relationship to Society Impacts Our Relationship To Self

Trauma Rewired has talked a lot about threat, including its neurobiology, what happens in the body when we don’t feel safe, and how a history of trauma affects what we perceive as a threat.

In this episode with Victor Jones, a resilience educator and neurosomatic intelligence coach, we dive deeper into threat, focusing on our relationship with others and society as a whole, as well as how trauma impacts our ability to regulate our nervous system. For example, connection is a survival need but feelings of vulnerability and intimacy can be threatening to the nervous system of those with a history of trauma. This inability to connect not only affects the health of an individual, but also the bond and trust within society.

The good news is that neurosomatic intelligence is a powerful tool that can help you settle your nervous system, allow you to connect, and live a life in line with your ethics. As we cover topics like stacked trauma and co-regulation, Victor and hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth all share their personal journeys to feeling safe in their body, and regulating their nervous system when they experience threat — something that’s nearly impossible to avoid in our dysregulating world.

Victor advocates for everyone to learn the language of the nervous system, teaching NSI tools to help people in his community in the hopes of driving more compassion in our world.

If you want to get out of survival mode and start helping others around you too, tune in now!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Victor’s and Elisabeth’s journey to discovering NSI

    • How Victor’s childhood affected his relationship with himself and the world

    • The threat and safety of finding connection

    • The consequences of being consistently exposed to threat

    • Nervous system regulation as a means to help yourself and others

    • How Victor is bringing NSI tools into the community

    • How NSI work can help first responders and high-trauma fields

    CPTSD is an Attachment Wound

    CPTSD is an Attachment Wound

Our last episode introduced the brain as a social organ, and how this topic relates to the neurobiology of relationships. Today, we dive deeper into how the brain develops through social interactions, why social connection is a survival need, and what happens in the body when we experience connection with other people.

Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is joining Jennifer and Elisabeth to discuss the impact of trauma on the brain’s functioning, and therefore, our relationships, expression, sense of safety, and overall health. They talk about what happens when you’re not primed for connection in childhood, how the brain is wired to be part of the social structure in relationships, what part of the brain guides us toward dysregulation and protective outputs, and lots more.

If any of this sounds confusing, be sure to listen for Matt’s definitions of attachment schema and C-PTSD from a neurosomatic perspective, which make it easier to understand how these systems and inputs come together for integration.

You’ll also finally learn why complex trauma is an attachment would, and most importantly, that change is possible and how you can get started NOW. Tune in for all this and more!

Society paints addiction as an individual character flaw, pointing the blame solely on the person who is experiencing the addiction. However, addiction is much more nuanced than that. Especially since we live in a highly dysregulated world, addiction should be expected. Trying to function in society while needing to dissociate has become a part of our collective culture. Since our nervous systems are on overdrive with the amount of sensory overload that is thrown our way, coupled with unresolved personal and collective trauma, finding ways to regulate the nervous system can become a means for survival. So, in that sentiment, addiction is far more than an individual character flaw, it's a systemic issue, which should be part of the conversation.

In today’s episode, co-host Elisabeth Kristoff gives her personal account of dealing with addiction and mental health issues, and how Applied Neurology helped in her healing journey. Elisabeth goes over how addiction played out in her life as well as what happens to the nervous system and brain at a neurological level when dealing with addiction. Although alcohol helps to depress the nervous system, the trauma that is being dampened in that moment still lives in the body and needs a way out. After many hospital visits, Elisabeth is now in sobriety and able to tell her story to help others who are in the same place as she used to be to heal from their trauma and addiction.

Tune in for a vulnerable conversation about what addiction really means on a personal and neurological level as well as tools that could help in coming out of addiction and into sobriety.
