    Healing Dissociation

    Healing Dissociation

“You can’t be present and dissociated at the same time.”

These wise words from co-host Jennifer Wallace encompasses why this topic is so important to explore. Presence is the truth of our emotions and our reality, because we cannot heal what we do not feel. Being present with our emotions, and feeling them in our body, allows us to truly understand and heal our nervous system in ways that dissociating from the body cannot.

This is a powerful conversation highlighting what goes on in the brain and nervous system when we dissociate, and how this protective mechanism can become maladaptive when its original function no longer serves us. There is a way to overcome dissociation and authentically feel emotions in the body to truly heal.

In this episode, Elisabeth Kristoff and Jennifer Wallace deep dive into dissociation and its characteristics. The discussion begins with defining what dissociation is and how it is learned at an early age as a protective mechanism, followed by unraveling how dissociation shows up in the brain, specifically which brain structures are involved in disassociation, as well as the connection between the vagus nerve and the interoceptive system as it pertains to dissociation.

It’s not enough to just understand these concepts intellectually, the real healing happens when we can experience them, which means feeling them in our bodies. That’s where Neurosomatic Intelligence Coaching comes in, where we teach you the tools you need to heal the whole self, and move out of dissociation and into the body in a safe way.

Tune in for this and more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Definition of dissociation

    • How dissociation is on a spectrum

    • The protective aspects of dissociation

    • How dissociation gets wired in the brain from an early age

    • The function of the thalamus and how it’s related to dissociation

    • The deep connection between the vagus nerve and the interoceptive system

    • How the brain makes predictions based on our past experiences

    • The possibility to train in new protective skills that are not maladaptive

    • Knowing about the  nervous system is not the same as experiencing it

    • Spiritual bypassing and dissociation

    • The importance of presence in understanding the truth of emotions

    Dissociation

    Dissociation

Dissociation is one way that our brain keeps us safe from things that may cause us stress or harm. Whether it’s a simple moment of daydreaming or constant state of dissociation in an abusive relationship, being cognitively and physically disconnected is not conducive to healing.

During this episode of Trauma Rewired, Jennifer and Elisabeth discuss the spectrum of dissociation and how it can affect the interoceptive system, or how we process and send information to the brain. They go over the symptoms of dissociation, sharing their personal experiences of dissociation related to childhood trauma.

Our survival brain sees healing as a threat, but there are ways to rehab the deficits in the nervous system to give more clear information to the brain, helping us to think and see more clearly. For example, training our interoceptive system can fight our hypersensitivity to threats and bring us out of disassociation.

To learn what tools can help you retrain your nervous system and the learned conditioned responses that are no longer serving you, tune in to this episode!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Misconceptions about dissociation

    • The definition of dissociation and its symptoms

    • Dissociation as a protective mechanism

    • How the interoceptive system works

    • Dissociation and the freeze response

    • How dissociation affects the body and how we feel pain

    • The link to avoidance behavior

    • Tools to bring yourself back from a state of dissociation

    • Body dysmorphia and deficits in the visual system

    • Living in the body to find a safe place to feel and heal

Attachment is the Root of Complex Trauma

Attachment is the Root of Complex Trauma

Our last episode introduced the brain as a social organ, and how this topic relates to the neurobiology of relationships. Today, we dive deeper into how the brain develops through social interactions, why social connection is a survival need, and what happens in the body when we experience connection with other people.

Matt Bush is joining Jennifer and Elisabeth to discuss the impact of trauma on the brain’s functioning, and therefore, our relationships, expression, sense of safety, and overall health. They talk about what happens when you’re not primed for connection in childhood, how the brain is wired to be part of the social structure in relationships, what part of the brain guides us toward dysregulation and protective outputs, and lots more.

If any of this sounds confusing, be sure to listen for Matt’s definitions of attachment schema and C-PTSD from a neurosomatic perspective, which make it easier to understand how these systems and inputs come together for integration.

You’ll also finally learn why complex trauma is an attachment would, and most importantly, that change is possible and how you can get started NOW. Tune in for all this and more!

    Misattunement & Co-regulation

    Misattunement & Co-regulation

One thing you’ve probably heard over and over again on this season of Trauma Rewired is that nervous systems affect one another. In fact, our nervous systems are continuously responding and adapting to each other’s signals — a process called coregulation.

Coregulation is important for maintaining safe, healthy relationships but can have a negative impact on the nervous system when someone is dysregulated or experiencing misattunement. A lack of connection through coregulation also impacts our ability for emotional self-regulation, which can lead to maladaptive behaviors like drinking, binge eating and codependency.

During this episode, Elisabeth and Jennifer define coregulation and attunement, and explain their role in self-regulation and emotional expression. They dive deeper into the importance of coregulation and the development of self-regulating behaviors in childhood, as well as the impact mothers, and even fathers, have on an infant’s stress response. Finally, you’ll hear how you can create change in your nervous system, and the positive results Elizabeth has noticed in her own life because of her own nervous system work.

As Jennifer says in this episode, “knowledge is power when you put it into action.” So give this episode a listen now!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • What it looks like to have a regulated nervous system

    • Our definition of coregulation

    • How nervous systems impact each other and our ability to regulate

    • Coregulating with pets or nature

    • When we learn how to be self-regulators

    • The role of attunement for regulation

    • The effects of misattunement in childhood

    • Can your children inherit your trauma response?

    • How the body responds to stress and the HPA axis

    • Creating change and repatterning your nervous system

The Fluidity of Attachment Styles and the Capacity to create more security

The Fluidity of Attachment Styles and the Capacity to create more security

When a child’s needs aren’t being met by their caregiver, by not being fed or feeling safe, they develop a distorted view of relationships. This attachment schema is the lens through which they examine the behavior of others, impacting their ability to form relationships and lead a healthy, happy life.

In past episodes, hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have talked about connection being one of our survival needs, but an insecure attachment directly challenges this need. Being close to others, feeling vulnerable and connected, can also be very dysregulating to those who learned to survive with unemotional or unreliable caregivers.

    Perfectionism is a Trauma Response

    Perfectionism is a Trauma Response

Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We’ve collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person.

What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don’t quite scream “perfect” do they?

Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today’s episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic.

You’ll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. Jennifer and Elisabeth also share their experience with perfectionism, and how it can push us into burnout or freeze states.

Perfectionism is not an attainable goal, which makes it debilitating and a hindrance to healing trauma. To take the first step towards moving out of perfectionism, tune in!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Defining the 3 types of perfectionism

    • Perfectionism as a trauma response

    • Jennifer’s example of setting yourself up for failure

    • The effects of perfectionism on our health

    • Maladaptive coping mechanisms for perfectionism

    • How to recognize perfectionist behaviors and thinking

    • Jennifer on taking action against her perfectionism

    • Trauma healing, neurosomatic intelligence, and integration

    • Limiting beliefs push the loop of perfectionism

    • Elisabeth on the importance on self-regulation tools in her life

    • How perfectionism negatively affects organizations and employees

    • Steps Elisabeth has taken to heal her perfectionism and workaholism

    The Freeze Trauma Response

    The Freeze Trauma Response

Have you been putting off sending that important email or having a difficult conversation? Thesecould be signs of freeze trauma response. Not taking action and procrastinating seems likeinnocent occurrences, because we all do it right? However, these can be seriously damaging to our lives and nervous systems.

The prolonged trauma that lives in our bodies that doesn’t have a chance to move through us
can wreak havoc in not only our lives but in our bodies. We have a hard time knowing when we
are in freeze response because it is so difficult to pinpoint because it gets roped in with
character attributes like laziness or dissociation.

Then why do we do this? Well, our brains are very good at protecting ourselves from real or
perceived threats, so they create these barriers to not put ourselves in situations where we
could potentially have an exaggerated stress response. Then we continue to procrastinate, and
    go into numbing activities.

However, there is a way to move through this and design a life where procrastination isn’t the
norm, and we can live more fulfilling, healthier lives. Rewiring our bodies isn’t an easy task, but
    the reward is exponential.

Tune in today to hear how you can move out of the freeze trauma response and into life!

    Topics discussed in this episode:
    ● What is the freeze response?
    ● Why does the freeze response occur?
    ● What happens when someone stays in a freeze response?
    ● How dissociation falls under freeze response
    ● How working with the nervous system can help remedy freeze response
    ● Protective postures used in freeze response
    ● Interrupting the protective posture feedback loop
    ● Shame associated with freeze response
    ● Is freeze response related to depression?
    ● Importance of identifying and understanding freeze response

    The Flight Trauma Response

    The Flight Trauma Response

“Living a life of growth and expansion is as simple as living in your nervous system.” - Jennifer
    Wallace

Arriving early, leaving late, overthinking, can’t sit still, breathing quickly, and always keeping
busy, are just a few examples of how the flight trauma response can manifest in our lives. This
response is biologically built in to keep us safe from harm, but what if that harm is perceived anddoesn’t require fleeing the scene? This can be detrimental to our personal and professional livesand keep us in a state of high alert with stress hormones coursing through our bodies that canbe quite harmful.

In order to combat this trauma response, the nervous system must be regulated, but it is difficult to do that when we can’t pinpoint whether the response is flight or what the trigger is. The first step is to understand the response, and come back to the body to understand the sensations that come with it.

This is where applied neurology has proven beneficial to create a safe container for nervous
system regulation to allow those of us with this response to come out on the other side with the tools and ability to self regulate. Regulate so we can have that hard conversation without
leaving half way through or to be able to finally relax and dig our feet in the sand while soaking
    up the sun.

In this episode, hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff founder of Nero-Somatic Intelligence and Brain Based Wellness share their personal experiences with flight response and how it affected their lives when they didn’t
    have the tools to regulate.

Tune in for information about tools on how to recognize and regulate the flight trauma response sensations to be able to live a full and expansive life!

    Topics discussed in this episode:
    ● What is a flight trauma response
    ● What you can do to develop an awareness of this response and how to regulate it
    ● What role does respiration play
    ● Behaviors associated with flight response
    ● Jennifer and Elisabeth’s personal experiences with flight
    ● The physiological response that happens during flight response
    ● How applied neurology can help regulate the nervous system
    ● How breathwork during flight may not be right for you

    ● Best tools to get out of flight response

    The Fight Trauma Response

    The Fight Trauma Response

It is our brain’s job to protect us against danger. Whether that is a real or perceived threat, the
brain will activate and will result in an action, or inaction. This isn’t the most effective way to be
protected for people who have experienced trauma, because that trauma is stored so deep in
our subconscious, that the threat response can activate in the absence of a real threat but in thepresence of a trigger.

There is no way to avoid having your trauma retriggered and your nervous system regulated at
all times. These are lived experiences that have sown their way into our nervous systems, but
we can implement tools to regulate in the face of a response that may be harmful to others or
    yourself.

Specifically the fight trauma response. This can be one of the most damaging to our
relationships and our bodies. Creating chaos in moments of intimacy with others, or chaos
within our bodies, can lead to living an unfulfilling life. There is a way out of this, and that is whawe want to talk about on today’s episode.

Jennifer and Elisabeth sit down to speak about fight response and how it manifested in their
lives. As well as tools you can use to help yourself move the anger through your body. They
worked with their nervous system and learned how to identify when they were in fight mode andhow to regulate it in that moment. They now want to share this knowledge with you.
Tune in to hear their stories and how you can start your journey to a regulated nervous system.

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    ● What happens in your body when in fight response
    ● How fight response is automatic without cognitive awareness
    ● Benefits of creating a new relationship with fight response
    ● Four ways people respond to anger
    ● How feelings of unsafety in yourself can make others feel unsafe
    ● How trauma responses can be misidentified as a personality trait
    ● Reparenting yourself during a trauma response
    ● How to move anger through the body
    ● What happens to your body when you express emotion
    ● The truth about how dysregulation does not stop

Dangers of Emotional Repression, Healthy Expression, and Your Nervous System

Dangers of Emotional Repression, Healthy Expression, and Your Nervous System

Why can it be so hard to feel and express emotions? What happens physiologically in the brain and nervous system when anger is stuffed down? Is emotional expression necessary for our physical health? Have these topics been studied, or can we only go off our own experiences?

Hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof, and Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro are answering all these questions and more. They break down the ways people with childhood trauma develop repressive behaviors, why emotional expression is crucial for our overall health, and the consequences of emotional repression in the nervous system.

Since repression is a subconscious defense mechanism, it affects our behavior and belief patterns, and changes our perception without us even realizing it. This makes it incredibly hard to change, but after listening to this episode, you’ll better understand how emotional repression impacts the different systems in the body and the power of nervous system regulation.

Tune in to learn how this knowledge can help you or your practice as a healer!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • Why emotional expression is important for our health

    • How childhood trauma affects our capacity to feel and express emotion

    • Emotional repression and abandonment

    • Responses of suppression vs. repression

    • Consequences to the nervous system
