Reshaping Trauma Recovery Through Affirmation Music and Nervous System Health with Toni Jones

No person exemplifies the healing power of music more than today’s guest, Toni Jones. A former life coach, Toni wanted to create a tool for clients to improve well-being, leading to the birth of affirmation music.

True growth often comes after a period of breaking down, and this was true for Toni during her healing journey through music. In this episode, she shares the profound transformation she underwent after periods of vulnerability and self-discovery. She delves into the cycles of death and rebirth in the healing process, highlighting the need for emotional practices that support emotional processing, personal growth, and renewal.

Toni discusses “The Living Room Experience,” her project that fosters community healing and brings a sense of belonging to people through shared experiences. The concept of community healing also comes into play during our conversation on sisterhood and feminine energy, both playing a crucial role in improving relationships and building a support system.

    Historical Trauma and Attachment

    Historical Trauma and Attachment

What role does our ancestral history play in our attachment styles, and mental health as a whole? Joining us on the show to help answer this question is Dr. Jennifer Mullen, a psychologist, educator, and author of “Decolonizing Therapy!”

Traditional therapy focuses on the individual, but decolonizing therapy puts forth the concept that understanding one's historical trauma and the current socio-political context can lead to deeper healing. And without a safe place to explore these traumas, affected populations don’t have the same opportunity to heal themselves and their relationships.

In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Mullen dives into the impact colonization and our ancestral wounds have on our attachment, sense of belonging, and emotional expression. She covers topics like migration trauma, separation from your ancestral lands (referred to as the original attachment wound), and how our current culture perpetuates deep-seated intergenerational traumas that have a profound effect on the body and nervous system.

Curious to learn more? Tune into our full conversation on decolonizing therapy now!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • The trauma of separation from family and land

    • How societal and cultural beliefs shape our attachment

Astrology, Cosmology, and Divinity; Connecting Deeper Through Regulation

Astrology, Cosmology, and Divinity; Connecting Deeper Through Regulation

Spiritual practices, like meditation or spending time outdoors, have the ability to expand our consciousness and cultivate connection with ourselves and the universe.

But today’s guest, NSI practitioner and educator Melanie Weller, is sharing something important for you to remember: “Any evolution that we aspire to experience for ourselves starts with nervous system regulation.”

To get the most out of your spiritual practices, for them to truly impact behavior and change your perspective, you must have the capacity and resiliency to experience moments of “awe” or stress without dysregulation. That’s why Melanie and hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth are diving deeper into the power of nervous system regulation, sharing how presence and embodiment transformed their own healing practices and resulted in expanded spirituality and self-expression.

This episode also covers the science behind loneliness and our health, how cosmology affects the nervous system, and the concepts of species loneliness and fearless presence.

How the Patriarchy and Systems of Oppression live in the Body

How the Patriarchy and Systems of Oppression live in the Body

“In order to have a thriving world, a thriving ecosystem that works in harmony, we need variance… And yet because we are so far away from our own sense of inherent knowing of our enoughness, we’ve constructed a world where that’s not true for our bodies.”

This quote from author Sonya Renee Taylor perfectly puts the discussion on this episode of Trauma Rewired into context. Joining host Jennifer Wallace to share their perspectives on how systems of oppression live in the body are founders of Neuro Somatic Intelligence, Elisabeth Kristof and Melanie Weller, as well as Victor Jones, a neurosomatic practitioner.

Societal, racial, institutional, and ancestral oppression are just a few of these systems that lead to chronic stress and negative consequences for our health. We live in a world with oppressive systems like racism and unrealistic body standards, which festers a sense of unsafety, and results in a dysregulated nervous system, making it difficult to find connection and community. But there are ways we can overcome these inherited and learned responses!

To start the process of dismantling these oppressive systems and getting to a place of safety and healing, tune in to learn more!

    Topics discussed in this episode:

    • The body hierarchy and how oppression lives inside the body/nervous system
    • How these systems of oppression affects us and how to challenge them
    • Melanie’s view on the effect of patriarchy and oppression on the body
    • Our bodies as ancestral artifacts
    • Victor on how NSI can help dismantle these systems
    • Finding compassion and connection
    • How the vagus nerve is impacted by oppression
    • Societal oppression in regards to fat phobia
    • Victor’s experienced conditioning around racism
    • Why regulation tools are so important
    • Mental illness stigma as oppression
    • Deep survival responses and regulating the nervous system
    • Benefits Elisabeth has seen from working with her nervous system
