    Running Inside Out Podcast

Sometimes we're inside the race and sometimes we're outside, but always around the Rochester, NY running scene and the community members who make it happen. If you run you, are a runner. If you are a runner, you have a story. These are the stories of our community. Hosted by Chris O'Brien.

He ran his first ultra marathon in 2015 and has since finished over twenty endurance races, including the Bear 100, the Georgia Death Race (four times), the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), and a first-place finish at The Endurance Society "Infinitus" 100-miler. Josh thinks a lot about running and makes his opinions known about the need for more strength and conditioning in the running world. 084: Just Turn Your Brain Off - with Jeff Beck (and surprise Guest Zach Rivers!)

084: Just Turn Your Brain Off - with Jeff Beck (and surprise Guest Zach Rivers!)
Jeff Beck calls in from way out in Oklahoma City to share some stories from racing throughout Rochester back in his High School and college days and what he is up to now with coaching a new crop of runners and starting a family in Oklahoma. Now, Mort Nace and I hatched a plan to surprise Jeff with a call from Zach Rivers during the podcast. Zach and Jeff raced and trained together when Zach was just a high schooler and Jeff was a National level collegiate runner. They had some amazing training sessions and races together and so once Zach gets on the line, things get a lot more interesting. Special Guest: Jeff Beck.

082: We Don't Have to Talk About Me - with Mike Welden

082: We Don't Have to Talk About Me - with Mike Welden
Despite the odds, the Earth has made it around the sun again and so it is time for Mike Welden to visit the studio. I wasn't sure what Mike had in store when he called me. In the end, it turned it wasn't anything to be afraid of; a little bit of running, a couple of laughs and good chat with a great person. Mike and I talk a little bit about Many On the Genny, Twisted Branch, and what it might look like if we all started being a bit more human to each other. As with most episodes featuring MIke, the language gets a little saucy, so keep away from sensitive ears if that isn't your thing. Special Guest: Mike Welden.

080: Barkley Marathons at Mind The Ducks - with John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy

080: Barkley Marathons at Mind The Ducks - with John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy
You may have heard of a little Netflix documentary called "Barkley, the Race that eats its young" and if you are a trail or ultra runner, you may have even been asked if you ever ran or want to run Barkley. And if you are a silly person, you might even be thinking that you DO want to run Barkley someday. What you may not know is that we have two people from the Rochester Area that have run Barkley. In fact, 6 they have 6 attempts between the two of them! Tim Hardy and John Fegyveresi both ran the race in 2012. John is one of the races only 15 finishers. Tim has finished races like Arrowhead 135, Badwater, And Massanutten Mountain and yet was portrayed as 'the human sacrifice' in the movie. Well thanks to Greater Rochester Track Club, Tim and John gave us a view behind the curtain. Special Guests: John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy.

079: I Love Getting Old - with Karen Howe

079: I Love Getting Old - with Karen Howe
Karen Howe recently ran a 3:08 at Boston. A PR by 2 minutes, at the age of 42. What's the secret? Well, she takes a day out of her recovery schedule to talk about her recent run as part of Team MR8. We talk about how a combination of planning, positivity, stubborness, coaching, and consistency is helping her get faster as she gets older! Special Guest: Karen Howe.

078: I Get This Now - with Lisa Famiglietti

078: I Get This Now - with Lisa Famiglietti
Lisa Famiglietti drops in to talk about being coerced into spontaneous racing, the joy (and coercion) of running groups, and how she hasn't ran a marathon (yet.) Then we explore the menus and beers of our favorite cities. Lisa's first ever race was a borrowed bib, her most recent race was a borrowed bib, get the picture? She can frequently be found running with (and wearing the colors of) Rochester Running Company. She brought me Fifth Frame and TreeHouse Beers. She works in TV and usually keeps a tight schedule, so she wanted to make this brief and tidy... but she brought beers... so we disavowed her of that notion pretty quickly. Enjoy! (and don't play the "Drink every time you hear Rochester Running Company" game while listening... please... for everyone's safety.) Special Guest: Lisa Famiglietti.

077: Voices From the Trail 2019

077: Voices From the Trail 2019
Laura Rekkerth made her way to 74 peaks last year. Daven Oskvig has run more than 70 ultras, finishing many on the podium. Tim Kent is a purposeful training machine setting an example for the next generation. Laura Webber is a family oriented adventure racer who did a 24 hour mountain bike relay race with her husband Ian while their 1 and 3 year old served as crew. They each were kind enough to share their experiences and motivations running and getting outside as well as humoring me during some of my more … interesting lines of questioning. Special Guests: Daven oskvig, Laura Rekkerth, Laura Webber, and Tim Kent.

076: 076: Run Across Haiti - with Prem Kumar and Daniel Knopp

076: 076: Run Across Haiti - with Prem Kumar and Daniel Knopp
Prem Kumar and Daniel Knopp are joining with Work, a non-profit organization, to run across Haiti. Their goal is to show that Haiti is not a place to be feared or pitied and to raise funds for our work in ending poverty in Menelas through dignified jobs. Prem and Dan have raised over $13,000 and will be running 200 miles in 8 days. In this episode they share their motivations for the run as well as their hopes and fears. Ultimately, they aim to share a message of hope and inspiration. [Note: Since this recording, Work anoounced the difficult decision to postpone the run due to demonstrations in Haiti. The run will still take place but will most likely be later in the spring. In talking with Dan and Prem, we still felt we should still release the episode as the goal was to get the word out about Haiti and it seemed more appropriate now than ever.] Special Guests: Daniel Knopp and Prem Kumar.
