    Running Scared

The Running Scared podcast is a deep dive into the horror and thriller films that had you running away but coming back for more. Hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts guide you through the films offering our opinions and insight - but mostly opinions - about what we found hair raising, hilarious and downright haunting. We also create original horror audio narratives intended to motivate joggers (aka jogcasts). Please note each episode contains spoilers.

    Episode 40 The Exorcist (1973)

After a little break, Co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts are back to review a classic film from the horror pantheon, William Friedkin's The Exorcist (1973).  Nearly 50 years after its release, does this film hold up? Did Friedkin get a cut of the Ouija Board sales? Why is Detective Kinderman always trying to give people movie tickets? Is this a revenge film? Or a discussion on the limits of modern medicine? Also, who will win our first ever Running Scared Award for the person who got the most exercise making this film?

Please note: The version of The Exorcist we are covering is the 2014 re-release entitled "The Version You've Never Seen" which includes 11 minutes of footage not used in the original cut.

Episode 39 Friday the 13th pt. 6 Jason Lives

Considered a turning point in the F13 series, Jason Lives takes Jason from supernatural stalker to re-animated zombie with a penchant for hilarious murder.  Running Scared co-hosts revisit the grassy plains of Jane and Wilson  where Jamie's Scottish grandparents let him watch horror at a young age, and review the 1986 "classic".  We count at least 7 unnecessary deaths. Is this horror-comedy? Or is it horror-slapstick? Is Horshack your best back-up man?  Does Jason's corpse get better looking as it ages? Does Jason kill kids? Can a goalie mask stand up to a rock pounding?

    Episode 38 Mother! (2017)

    Episode 38 Mother! (2017)

Say what you want about Darren Aronofsky, he sure knows how to turn an anxiety dream into a panic inducing movie. The Running Scared boys try to hang on as the rollercoaster ride that is Mother! (2017) stirs up our paranoia and our patience for unwanted guests. Does the layering of symbolism add up to anything? Does it matter? Is this a film or an experience? Do you buy Jamie's uncle's 2 day rule? What would a crappy B-movie version of this film look like? If you're the paranoid type, Rob doesn't recommend mixing drugs and this movie.

    Episode 37 Chopping Mall (1986)

What happens when you give Johnny 5 from Short Circuit a laser gun and program it like an ED-209 from Robocop, drop it into suburbia in the 80s, give it the uber-authoritarian position of mall cop and hope nothing goes wrong? You get Chopping Mall (1986)! Running Scared co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Rob Lendrum invited special guest Ari Fleeman from 6amrun to pick the flick and we end up in the C-level 80s horror section. Bring the bongs, brews and babes because it's time for an orgy in a furniture store.

    Episode 35 The Sadness (2021)

Writer, Director, Editor, VFX Guy, Probably an Extra, Canadian Rob Jabbaz makes our skin crawl before he slowly peels it off and pukes on us in the exploitation horror fuckfest that is "The Sadness"(2021). We'll just warn you here and now - it's super violent and sexually violent and gross and hard to take, but is it awesome? The Running Scared co-hosts debate it's awesomeness. How does this film activate our fears about a pandemic and a society riddled with public shootings? Is this a new spin on zombies or a disease outbreak story? Why aren't there more violent sex crazed pervert women? What about the babies!!!???

Wesley Snipe's love letter to the 90s is not only a thrilling modernization of the vampire mythos, but a comic movie with a black hero who arrived just in time to save Marvel's butt. Running Scared co-hosts Robert Lendrum and Jamie Roberts review the kung fu blood bath that is Blade! How many newspapers were killed in the making of this film? Is this a mob movie? How gross are the kills, or maims, in this film? Where does this flick fall on the list of Stephen Dorff films? Why are some mother fuckers always trying to ice skate uphill? Episode 33 X (2022)

X gonna give it to ya in more ways than one. The 2022 Ti West slasher asks us to put our keys in a bowl and see where a hot night in 1979 Texas takes us. Sex and horror are hardly strange bed fellows, but this film manages to put a whole new spin on it. Co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Robert Lendrum talk about the theme of aging and regret. Does this slasher reimagine the genre?  Does it check every box and fill every hole? Do all hilly billy murderers have skin problems? Old people have never been more gross in a film that challenges our comfort levels and demands the audience deal with the fact that old people like to f#@!

Are there any good werewolf flicks? Neil Marshall's 2002 action horror Dog Soldiers, throws its helmet in the ring as one of the best. Running Scared Co-host Jamie Roberts gets back to his Scottish roots and teaches Rob some proper "english". We discuss innovation and smart filmmaking on a low budget, how a great cast can make the quiet moments really work, the difference between LED and an IED, and the hybrid genre of war/horror. This werewolf movie takes that old Jeckyll and Hyde routine and shoots it in it's face!

In this episode of Terrifying Tracks we enlist the help of synthesizer collector and expert Ben Shannon to help us deconstruct John Carpenter's seminal score for the 1978 classic slasher film "Halloween". Did John Carpenter own his own synthesizer? Which one did he use? How big and expensive are the things? How did the synthesizer specifically contribute to the music and what other musical elements is Carpenter utilizing to make this a classic horror score!

We also discuss the great chip tune soundtracks of all time, the Japanese "Tin Pan Alley" and why the synthesizer remains a popular choice for contemporary scores.
