Looking to flip the script in Non-Majors Biology? Learn how!

Join McGraw Hill Marketing Manager Erin Martin and Wes Rogers of Georgia Gwinnett College as they discuss how Wes uses Connect Master: Why Biology? to increase engagement and scientific literacy in his Non-Majors Biology course.  Utilizing units that start with a relevant theme and then thread in biological concepts allows him to break away from traditional approach that presents the biology first and then introduces relevancy.  Wes also talks about how he uses Virtual Labs not only as a lab replacement in an online environment but also as a learning resource to offer students a “hand-on” experience that is often difficult to achieve in a digital environment.  Wes offers best practices and advice to new and existing users of Connect Master: Why Biology? and Virtual Labs.

How to integrate lecture and lab concepts in your face-to-face course!

Please join Heidi Smith (Front Range Community College), as she talks about how you can use Virtual Labs  to integrate lab concepts with your lecture! Heidi shares how you can use the virtual labs product to extend the learning in lecture.  You can offer labs that were once thought to be difficult  due to lack of time, money, or lab equipment.

One example,  the Biotechnology chapter in your course is awesome. Students read about gene cloning. You can offer the bacterial transformation lab to help your students begin to better understand biotechnology/cloning.  Heidi talks about the PCR lab in Connect Virtual Labs. She didn’t have the time or money to do the lab face-to-face. The PCR lab is easily deployed through Connect. Amplification of DNA is another challenging topic, and you can deploy a lab on the polymerase chain reaction.

The newly revised learning modules in Connect include A&P Prep, Biology Prep, Microbiology Prep, and Nutrition Prep. Each module identifies content the student knows and, more importantly, doesn’t know. Prep then provides specific learning resources that teach the concepts with which they’re struggling.

Please join Jim Connely (McGraw Hill Education) & Michael Kool  (McGraw Hill Education), as they talk about unique assessments with McGraw Hill Virtual Labs. McGraw Hill Connect Virtual Labs can be utilized in a variety of implementation models. Click here to learn from a few instructors how they have seen success with Virtual Labs!  Instructors are using the simulations in Virtual Labs as pre-lab learning experiences, so students are better prepared and more efficient for the in-person lab experience. The lab simulations are also a great resource for integrating lecture and lab topics in order to allow students to apply what they have learned in lecture to the lab simulations. Finally, the simulations in Virtual Labs provide a complete lab experience for online courses. In all of these lab implementation scenarios, instructors need different types of assessment options. In this article, you will be introduced to the different types of assessment activities available to you in Connect that accompany the simulations in Virtual Labs.
