Sons of Asaph - A Worship Podcast

After many piles of hate mail and angry emails, we are finally going to start doing what we've always done......continue to post randomly timed episodes that have no real rhythm about them. This way we never have a consistent way of growing our listener.

For reals tho, We are shifting gears and planning for the future. This is not farewell for the Sons of Asaph, this is "see you soon". With new content, new plans, more voices, and most importantly, we're getting down to the nitty gritty with all of our friends in the worship leader world. We're taking the podcast to the streets to include YOU! Our listener. We already have a large list of guests and it will keep growing as we make more connections. We'll have a central TOPIC for the season we're in. But we will have loads of new perspectives and will always work to serve this up to all those who are involved in worship or even just love worship,.

We hope that we can continue to fill up a space of time in your life that you may question how we were successful in chewing up some of your precious time. I'm sure that even just reading that title makes your skin crawl. We are confident that we're going to get a mixed bag of reactions. But don't worry, we pick on ourselves and our own experiences in charging for serving (cringe).

As leaders, whether you are just serving in your home church or helping out somewhere else, it's important to keep the right kind of heart about serving. That way the rest is a blessing.

I think an important note to make here is the effort made in proving our own innocence in charging a church when we serve and also how humble we all are. This topic tends to take some serious jabs at our pride, as it should.

It's not too uncommon for something to come out of left field when it comes to planning for the best Sunday ever (or whatever day cuz Jesus is every day). 

How do you overcome the challenges? 

If you're down a leader or maybe some equipment isn't working, someone got a creative bug and wants it today, or just not feeling it today? 

The enemy loves to make things difficult.

But we worship a big God that is much "bigger than the boogie man" - quote Veggie Tales

Being that we recently brought in a new voice (Eric Munoz) to the podcast, we decided while he was away that we would do a little Worship Team Draft.

This was a fun talk about how we each would build up our worship teams, who would be our draft picks, and how our team culture would create a winning season and possibly take us to the super bowl of worship (Hillsong?).

Happy Belated 50th Episodiversary!

Habakkuk 2:2 is our bible verse. We talk about Habakkuk's tutu. The focus of the verse is about vision. And we carry on with this verse and talk about  Vision vs. Mission.

Psalm 100:1-5 was the text we used now for the last few episodes. We actually didn't do this on purpose but it worked out this way. Or we lack any sense of creativity and variety with our bible verse usage.

But this episode was full of fun. We are wrapping up our Sound Tech Series with an interview turned audition with our good friend Eric Munoz.

If you want to feel like you know absolutely nothing about soundboards just invite this guy on to talk about sound teams; I now  know I don't have a clue about soundboards.

But that's why I keep Eric's number on speed dial. 

We recorded this episode in Eric's living room while enjoying  fresh coffee and pastries courtesy of doordash (aka Eric's wife).

But don't worry it wasn't all about too much brainy sound team stuffs. When it comes to Sean and Adam, brainy doesn't actually exist. We had a ton of fun talking about how Eric serves into many ministries and got some real solid gold advice about sound team setup.

We also talked about being picked last, who's humbler, favorite button is mute, festival patches, making your bed (music bed), no call backs, un-fathered, checking your ego cuz you're not special, dummy fader, sound tech is a form of worship, and so many more mic drop moments. We think Eric might stick around for a while hopefully to continue to embarrass us. 

We're glad you could join in on the conversation  and thanks for sticking with us through such a lengthy audition process. We also hope that amidst all of the laughter, sips of coffee, crunches of pastries, and really terrible dad jokes you might find some sense of sanity and glean from us at least one or two important things.

Psalm 98:4-6 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

I think these verses were talking to the sound team cuz without them there is no joy in worship. They make sure that the song is heard by everyone (sometimes loudly). The sound team is really an essential ingredient to every worship team. So thank you thank you thank you.

In this episode we talk about some of the more complicated technical aspects of the sound board. But don't worry, we try not to use big words so your ears won't hertz (Hz). But we would love some feedback about your own experiences as well. So don't delay! Listen in as we talk about starting with a worship culture and the knowledge will follow.
We also have some great discussions about video game music genre, being pro amateurs, the groove triangle, finding joy in the peaks and valleys (sound term), and the modern YouTube worship leaders.

 I better get this episode out pretty quick. Since I released Ep49 the other day. But who's counting anyways. 

This is actually the first of three episodes about Sound Team, Sound Techs, Soundboard life, being Sound Bored ;)

Our verse is Psalm 100 and Romans 12:1&2 talking about a Joyful noise with gladness, thanksgiving, and praise. While presenting ourselves and how we serve as a living sacrifice "holy and acceptable". 

We talk about a Spicy Worship Burrito, two recently released hardcore bands "HolyName" with my friend Tommy Green from Sleeping  Giant and then the other band is "Project 86". Both have some epic new releases that you must go have a listen to. 
Our conversation is about serving in the church, maybe not feeling very qualified to serve there but willing to learn and find an opportunity to worship while you serve. So though we are talking about our sound teams this kind of attitude isn't exclusive to this area; you can find it in all areas of your church ministries. 

You might be asking yourself if there is any random nonsense about this episode and you are right, this seems to be more serious than other episodes we usually do. I hate to disappoint but I'm even disappointed in the level of banter this time. But that doesn't take away from what we do talk about. We are BACK! We had to take a break for a few months but now we are back at it. We've made a couple changes but it's still the same old dorky podbods from before. But with a few more grey hairs.

Oh my goodness it's been a while since we've posted an episode. And there is really no good excuse as to why. But this episode was on the heels of our last episode where we turned our attention to pick on the congregation. Hopefully we don't hurt too many feelings.

Over the last few 40 or so episodes we have covered an array of topics but never have we ever turned our attention to the people we are called to lead. That's right everyone, we're picking on you today! Okay, not really picking on you. 

What we wanted to do for the next few episodes is cover the idea of being a worshipper. What is it like from the pews, seats, bleachers, or lawn chairs?  Basically worshipping from the congregation point of view. This week we talk a little about a heart condition that can prevent us from entering into worship when we are with others in fellowship and while in that secret (quiet) place. How are we possibly stealing the glory of God?

But don't worry, this episode is packed full of useless banter as well. Like being models of inconsistency, bad evangelists, bottled baptism water aka. people tea, Sundays, sporty sports in the Lympics, and Dad bods in speed skater attire aka sausages on skates.

Clothes have this amazing ability to ignite the hearts of many but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Yep! You heard that right, we're stripping down (NO), we're taking it all off (still NO), we're getting down to the Nitty Gritty (that works) on all things worship clothing. 

It seems there is a wide variety of opinions when it comes to proper worshippy wear. From full suits, to dresses to the ankle, or logo t-shirts that are a little too tight, to holy jeans that might be a bit unholy. Our outfits can sometimes speak and lead louder than we can sing. So there are some  things worth considering.
