How Is Lateral Epicondylitis Treated In Physical Therapy?

How Is Lateral Epicondylitis Treated In Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy in the Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis

If you have Tennis Elbow and go to see your Doctor for diagnosis and treatment, it's very likely that you'll be given a prescription for Physical Therapy treatments.

But, the question is: How likely are those treatment to help you fully recover?

(Or to at least to put you well on your way to healing and recovery in a reasonable period of time.)

And what if you've already been through a series of visits and it didn't help you – What do you do NOW?

There's no doubt that Physical or 'Physiotherapy' treatments help some Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers recover…

However, in my experience, working directly with hundreds of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers for about 15 years…

And from what I've gathered from talking with my Tennis Elbow Classroom program members, Physical Therapy also seems to let a lot of people down...

And in many cases, that's after dozens of visits, MONTHS of hard work and precious wasted time and energy – that's gone forever.

NOT to disparage hard-working and well-meaning Physical Therapists.

Tennis Elbow is a stubborn, difficult to treat injury – and my skepticism and criticism has to do with the overall Medical System and how it looks at and treats these kinds of injuries.

And since Physical Therapy is under the umbrella of the Allopathic Medicine and its symptom-obsessed Model, there's quite a lot to criticize. Including how that system, in a way, ties the hands of its practitioners.

So, let's begin with a look at HOW Tennis Elbow is typically treated…

    This podcast episode covers:

    • How is Tennis Elbow / Lateral Epicondylitis typically treated in Physical Therapy?
    • What are the techniques or 'Modalities' often used?
    • Is anything missing from this typical treatment protocol?
    • And are there Tennis Elbow rehab exercises you can do at home?

Tennis Elbow Treatment Strategy - Tennis Elbow 101

Tennis Elbow Treatment Strategy - Tennis Elbow 101

In the previous episode 'Epicenter At The Epicondyle' we talked about the nature of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow injuries…

Including how the injury is almost always a gradual, chronic one – Not sudden and acute…

And how the problem is one of Degeneration – Not inflammation. How it's really Tendinosis not Tendonitis.

And THAT calls for a completely different treatment approach!

So, now we're going to map out that strategy, which is going to focus on the big objective, of reversing the tendon degeneration.

And here's the link to the article and video I mention in the episode:

The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101

The Muscular Causes Of Tennis And Golfer's Elbow - Tennis Elbow 101

What causes Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow?

What's the insidious process by which repetitive motions, (whether related to work, tennis, golf or gardening) end up injuring you and causing you so much pain?

In this episode we talk about the central role muscles play in causing the injury. (It's no small part!)

First of all, Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are muscle AND tendon injuries…

And although the tendon is where the most serious part of the injury is – (And what essentially defines the injury) let's make sure we understand what the difference is between a muscle and a tendon.

Why does that matter? Because, although muscles and tendons are two parts of the same unit, they are made of different materials – and they have difference purposes.

Another big difference between them is that they heal at different rates. Tendons, unfortunately, heal much more slowly than muscles...

Why Is Tennis Elbow So Challenging? - Tennis Elbow 101

Tendon injuries like Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are notorious for not healing easily or well – But why is that the case? Why are they often so stubborn and challenging to recover from?

The Tennis Elbow Classroom Treatment Strategy

The Tennis Elbow Classroom Treatment Strategy

Golfer's and Tennis Elbow treatment strategy podcast cover art

Do you have a Tennis Elbow treatment plan? A consistent strategy based on how to – And just as importantly – How NOT to treat it?

Here's one based on straight-forward principles of healing and my decade-plus experience successfully treating Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers.

Unfortunately, the typical Tennis Elbow treatment protocol tends to be overly focused on alleviating symptoms – Not on healing.

(And we always have to remember they are not the same thing – Sometimes they are mutually exclusive.)

If you completely heal your injury there should be no more pain – but there are a lot of things you can do to relieve pain (by suppressing it, usually) that have no positive effect on healing your injury, and which, can impede healing – or even worsen your injury.

So, it’s not surprising that so many Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers find themselves scrambling from treatment to treatment and from cure to so-called “cure” – without a real strategy or a deeper understanding of the injury, in desperate search of relief…

This is especially true in the beginning – Before you understand how serious your Tennis Elbow injury really is…

Before you realize it's not going to just get better permanently with a little rest, a few pills and some ice…

And before you suddenly get it!... You're trapped in a terrible, vicious cycle!

So if you need a plan for escaping that vicious cycle – What I call, “The Tennis Elbow Triple Trap” this podcast episode is for you.

And if you'd like to learn more about the Tennis Elbow Classroom treatment strategy, please follow this for more detail

Selfie Elbow: A Painful, New Injury? (Yes And No)

Selfie Elbow: A Painful, New Injury? (Yes And No)

Is Selfie Elbow a new medical condition?

Is your arm or elbow starting to hurt from taking large numbers of selfies?

You may have the latest Tech Injury, many have begun to call "Selfie Elbow."

(Selfie Elbow is pain in the elbow caused by holding ones arm fully extended and putting one's wrist in an awkward position to snap pictures of oneself over and over – AKA taking “selfie” pics.)

This podcast episode still applies, though, whether you're starting to feel pain in your elbow, wrist or fingers – And whether it's related to typing, texting OR selfie taking using your computer, tablet OR smartphone.

Because it appears that Selfie Elbow is just another, newer form of Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow, and not truly a unique, new medical condition.

(Lateral Epicondylitis or Medial Epicondylitis, or better yet, Epicondylosis or Epicondylopathy)

The same principles apply to this “new” Overuse Injury as with other Repetitive Strain Injuries.

Platelet Rich Plasma For Treating Tennis Elbow

Platelet Rich Plasma For Treating Tennis Elbow

In this podcast Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom discusses the pros and cons of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy in the treatment of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow. Including:

    • Whether there's any evidence PRP is an effective treatment, (based on medical studies)
    • Whether it's worth the price – and the pain afterward (also sometimes during the procedure)
    • And whether there are any better alternatives (other approaches to achieving the same goals.)

    What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?

PRP (and its less-sophisticated relative, Autologous Blood Injection) are in-office, minimally-invasive “non-surgical” procedures that begin by having a small amount of your blood drawn.

In the PRP procedure your blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, by separating them from your red blood cells and your plasma, which is mostly water and Electrolytes.

Then your platelets (along with some of your plasma) is injected into the injured area that's not healing (usually a tendon or ligament.)

Platelets are cells in your blood that are mostly responsible for blood clotting, and they also secrete growth factors that are involved in tissue healing.

(The procedure with ABI is the same, except they skip the spinning and separating step, and simply inject you with the whole blood.)

For a deeper look at PRP and ABI, including medical study cites, links to mainstream news articles and more, read my post here:

    Do Golfers Get Tennis Elbow?

    Do Golfers Get Tennis Elbow?

Do Golfers also get Tennis Elbow? Yes, quite often, in fact.

Curiously, a glance at golf magazine websites, medical studies and surveys suggests that not only do golfers get Tennis Elbow, they actually suffer this injury more often than Golfer's Elbow!

(Although, statistically, there are many more cases of both injury types among people who don't play tennis or golf!)

In this podcast Allen Willette, 'Tennis Elbow Tutor' covers these related questions and more:

    • What's the difference between Tennis and Golfer's Elbow?
    • How and where do golfers develop this injury?
    • Why do golfers suffer Tennis Elbow more often than Golfer's Elbow?

Working Out Wisely With Tennis Elbow

Working Out Wisely With Tennis Elbow

Should you continue working out with weights or doing any kind of upper-body strength-training exercise if you have Tennis Elbow?

Does it make any difference what originally caused your injury? – Whether it was originally caused by:

    • Weight lifting in the first place?
    • From playing tennis or golf?
    • From computer use?
    • OR from heavy, physical work?

Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom, answers these and other Tennis Elbow related exercise questions in this episode.

Your needs will vary, depending on whether your injury originates from low-intensity / high duration work, like computing…

Medium to high intensity (but shorter duration) sports like tennis and golf…

Or long-duration, heavy, physical work, like construction.

Smashing The Tennis Elbow Inflammation Myth!

Smashing The Tennis Elbow Inflammation Myth!

What's the first thing they tell you to do when you have Tennis Elbow?

"Reduce" the inflammation – Right? Well, here's why you can forget all about that!…

Inflammation the biggest Tennis Elbow fallacy of all time – And you don't actually have to chase, treat or worry about it.

In-depth post, video and podcast here:

    https://tenniselbowclassroom.com/what-is-tennis-elbow-1/tennis-elbow-tendonitis-inflammation-myth/

Here's why you don’t have to put up with the stomach-churning pills, the constant icing and the damaging Cortisone shots…

Why the inflammation-fighting, reducing / "managing" approach to treating Tennis Elbow (also known as 'Lateral Epicondylitis' or 'Elbow Tendonitis') is a complete dead end and may do you more harm than good.

(Despite everything you may have read or been told AND in spite of the fact that your Tennis Elbow may FEEL like it’s inflamed!)

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Tennis Elbow?

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Tennis Elbow?

How long does it take to fully recover from a Tennis Elbow injury? Some injuries seem to only take weeks to heal, while others take months or even years – Why is that?

And is there a way to speed up your Tennis or Golfer's Elbow healing process?

Full, detailed post with video and podcast:

What Are The Best Exercises For Tennis Elbow?

What Are The Best Exercises For Tennis Elbow?

To make a full recovery from your Tennis Elbow injury you’ll need several key strengthening / rehab exercises.

And in this episode, I cover the three best exercises for Tennis Elbow, which one(s) you should start with, and how taking a more indirect approach may be the best way to ease into your rehab.

Because, for some Tennis Elbow sufferers, taking the direct approach that's most often recommended (starting with “pure” wrist extension) is an invitation to more struggle and aggravation.

The Goals Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercises

The Goals Of Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercises

What exactly are the goals of Tennis Elbow rehab exercises?

There are three key things you’re trying to accomplish with resistance exercise when recovering from a Tennis Elbow tendon injury, whether it’s Tendinosis, Tendonitis or a tendon tear:

    • Muscle strengthening
    • Tendon remodeling
    • And tendon healing

In this podcast we look at each of these important Tennis Elbow exercise goals in detail. And for the article please visit:

Are Eccentric Exercises The Best Way To Rehab Tennis Elbow?

Are Eccentric Exercises The Best Way To Rehab Tennis Elbow?

There’s a lot of talk about the idea of using ‘Eccentric Exercise’ in Tennis Elbow rehab – But can one type of muscle contraction be that much more effective in your tendon healing?

Or is the eccentric approach (and the “FlexBar” rubber bar device often used to perform it) just another exercise fad?

(An ‘Eccentric’ contraction is the controlled lengthening of a muscle against resistance – Vs. the ‘Concentric’ contraction, where the muscle shortens.)

Based on several medical studies, there is evidence to back up the idea that Eccentric muscle contractions may (in some cases) be superior to concentric ones when it comes to tendon rehab.

A lot of the buzz around this idea seems to revolve around a single study – A small, but apparently successful study of Tennis Elbow sufferers…

    Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise Timing

    Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercise Timing

The exercises you need for Tennis Elbow rehab are easy enough to learn – The hard part is knowing when to do them.

When done at the right time, exercises should help your recovery – But, done at the wrong time, they can make your injury worse, unfortunately!

    Is the right approach to:

    • Rest for some weeks before starting exercises?
    • Do you need to wait for inflammation to go down first?
    • Or is it best to just jump right in and start them anytime?
