Since then, I have embarked on a quest for greater purpose and joy in business and in life. Welcome to the conversation as each week we discuss together, and with successful business owners and leaders, how to strive for happiness. Together we will adventure to discover the secrets to finding true purpose and impact and to redefine our understanding of success. This is The Business of Happiness.

#262 - The Person Least Likely To Uphold Your Boundaries

In this enlightening episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy dives deep into the significance of setting boundaries and how they positively impact both personal and professional relationships. As the saying goes, "good boundaries make good neighbors," and it holds true for fostering healthy interpersonal connections as well.

Many individuals tend to prioritize pleasing others without realizing that by saying "yes" to everything, they unintentionally say "no" to their own needs and priorities. Dr. MacCarthy emphasizes the importance of recognizing this pattern and taking responsibility for upholding personal boundaries.

By setting clear boundaries, we not only establish trust but also cultivate robust and respectful relationships. It's important to understand that even when some individuals may not agree with our choices, they are likely to respect us for standing up for our beliefs. Boundaries create a sense of safety within relationships, shifting the focus from solely meeting others' needs to acknowledging and honoring our own.

#261 - Happiness Does Not Mean Being Happy All The Time

#261 - Happiness Does Not Mean Being Happy All The Time

People who consider themselves happier often lead healthier lives, exercising more frequently and making better dietary choices. Consequently, they may enjoy a longer lifespan. Additionally, their increased happiness translates into higher productivity at work, benefiting the overall economy. Furthermore, these individuals tend to exhibit altruistic behavior, contributing to the well-being of their local and broader communities. However, it is essential to recognize that happiness does not imply being cheerful all the time. Life presents its fair share of difficulties, upsets, and pains, and it would be erroneous to deny their existence. In this episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy delves into the concept of happiness, emphasizing that it does not equate to a perpetual state of rainbows and butterflies. Without experiencing pain, how can one truly appreciate pleasure? Without encountering stress, how can one truly savor moments of calm? True happiness lies in embracing and fully experiencing all the emotions that life offers and finding ways to navigate forward with a positive outlook.

    #260 - Self-Forgiveness Is A Potent Success Strategy

    #260 - Self-Forgiveness Is A Potent Success Strategy

In this enlightening episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy explores the profound concept of self-forgiveness and its far-reaching impact on one's life and relationships. While you may readily extend forgiveness to others, you may find it considerably more challenging to grant it to yourself. However, self-forgiveness is not an act of absolving oneself or a display of weakness. Rather, it is a powerful practice that can bring about transformative effects. Forgiveness, whether directed towards oneself or someone who has wronged you, should not be misconstrued as condoning the behavior in question. Rather, it involves acknowledging the actions or events, accepting their occurrence, and consciously choosing to release the accompanying anger, resentment, and desire for retribution. By embracing forgiveness, you liberate yourself from the burden of past grievances and enable personal growth and healing.

#259 - Compassion As A Psychophysiologic Remedy for Burnout with Catherine Schweikert

#259 - Compassion As A Psychophysiologic Remedy for Burnout with Catherine Schweikert

Compassion takes empathy one step further because it harbors a desire for all people to be free from suffering, and it's imbued with a desire to help. In this enlightening episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy is joined by the esteemed Author and Clinician Communication Coach Catherine Schweikert. Together, they delve deep into the transformative power of compassion and its profound effects on our well-being, particularly in combating burnout.

Catherine has practiced medicine for the last 22 years. She has witnessed, over time, an increase in dissatisfaction with the practice of medicine and an increase in burnout among both her and her colleagues.

Her inspiration comes from their struggles and passion for bringing competent, compassionate care to all their patients without sacrificing themselves. She began her journey as a clinician communication coach.  This role gave her great insight into the struggle to maintain their passion for medicine. She began to investigate and understand her struggles and barriers to giving and receiving compassion personally and professionally. Through writing, she found Pragmatic Compassion. Pragmatic Compassion is the concept that compassion needs heart and wisdom to be effective. She started to dive into how our psychological world affects our physical world.

She began a Ph.D. in psychophysiology, studying how our mind affects our well-being. Through these experiences, she was encouraged to share her insights more formally.  She wrote The Compassion Remedy: How to Leverage the Psychophysiological Benefits of Compassion to Beat Burnout, Renew Relationships, and Enjoy Greater Well-Being. Through writing this book, she was accepted into Stanford University Medical School’s Center for Compassion and Altruism and Research (CCARE) program of Applied Compassion. It was here that she developed, with the support of Stanford, a program for hospitals to apply the scientifically proven and research-based aspects of compassion. She did this to improve, first and foremost, the clinician’s grounded, compassionate base so that they may be strong and vital enough to help their patients heal without giving away their vitality.

#256 - Why We Don't Take Action On Our Dreams

Taking action means laying out a plan to achieve your goals and putting in a consistent effort to achieve them. Over time, you can make the visions of your dreams real. Dreams inspire you to build a life bigger than what you have now. But dreams without taking action are just that… dreams. In this episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy talks about taking action on our dreams and what holds us back from actually doing so: fear. We've all been afraid of taking action at least once in our lives. It’s a natural response to moving out of your comfort zone. But while you shouldn’t rebuke yourself for feeling fearful, neither should you wallow in it so that you never get past it.

#252 - Stress In Medicine and Dentistry: PART 4: People Pleasing

Most of us want to make our friends and family members happy. Who doesn’t? But if you're constantly going above and beyond for everyone or feeling guilty when you don't, that becomes a sign of a trauma response. Today Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy talks about the last fear response: Fawn. Fawning is a trauma response where a person develops people-pleasing behaviors to avoid conflict and establish a sense of safety. She also shares how it can show up in a person’s life aside from just people-pleasing and how you can recover from it. When you’re used to prioritizing other people, it’s a brave step to prioritize yourself.

In this episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy talks about the freeze response and her experience with it. She also shares how it can show up in your life and how you can overcome it. #250 - Stress In Medicine and Dentistry: PART 2: When We Fight

#250 - Stress In Medicine and Dentistry: PART 2: When We Fight

From time to time, when we’re angry or frustrated, we may feel like we need our defenses up in order to protect ourselves as we feel threatened. In this episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy talks about another response to fear or stress that humans have: fight. The fight response is one of the most primitive physiological reactions to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. We have many built-in and fast-reacting mechanisms within the brain. They have kept us safe for thousands of generations. While they still have great value sometimes, our fight, flight and freeze responses can leave us chronically activated, which can only harm us mentally and physically in the long run.

#247 - Nourish Your Body and Soul In and Out of The Office With Maria DeRosa

Nourish, by definition, means to sustain with food or nutriment; supply with what is necessary for life, health, and growth.  Nourishing the mind, body, and soul is so important for living a happy, healthy, abundant life. In this episode, Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy is joined by cooking connoisseur and the Founder of Ladies of the Kitchen, Maria DeRosa. She shares her experience of stress and unhealthiness that pushed her to make a change for herself and for other people who seek the same change she did all those years ago.

Maria started her career as a high school Spanish teacher and, as a food lover, transitioned into a restauranteur with her own cafe and catering company for over 28 years. During this time, she also served on a Restaurant Advisory Committee supporting teachers and trainers in the culinary field. After a successful career in both industries, she offers her talents to provide a safe community where women use the art of cooking to heal soul wounds. This is done by using all 5 senses with simple hands-on recipes.

Maria is a Speaker in the Addiction Recovery Field and has been Certified as a Law of Attraction Life Coach as well as a Certified Nutrition and Health Coach. In 2004 she was awarded Business Woman of the Year for her educational work in developing the Irwindale Library Foundation.

She is the author of Seasons of Baking and has been featured in her community paper, and volunteers regularly in two 12-step recovery programs. Her mission today is: to create healing mealtime moments around the table so that one replaces deep vulnerabilities with a belly full of spiritual joy.

Happiness - it’s something we all aim for, along with health, wealth, and success in our endeavors. However, finding happiness in everyday life can be a difficult task, especially when we get used to living life on auto-pilot. Today Dr. Tarryn MacCarthy talks about happiness and how to find it again after becoming desensitized from it after pushing through life like a machine every day for years. While finding happiness can be challenging, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It often comes from within – learn how to tame negative thoughts and approach every day with optimism.
