30: Overcoming Suicide | Matt Caruana

30: Overcoming Suicide | Matt Caruana

Matt Caruana is a mental fitness facilitator and teenage survivor of a suicide attempt. Matt says that he was willing to die for his emotions as he jumped from a rooftop in the middle of the night at sixteen after sending his girlfriend a final text message saying goodbye. This experience left him a paraplegic. He has since turned his life around and aims to inspire what he calls 'mental fitness' in anybody who will listen, embracing the one thing that nearly killed him. This newfound purpose led him to overcome depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Questions relating to self-worth and self-image were replaced by a purpose-driven life and reason to live.

He chats with psychotherapist Emil Barna about his story and message for those in the pit of despair: Never lose heart; on the other side of pain is meaning.

29: Groupthink, Cognitive Dissonance & Tribalism | Simon Brown

29: Groupthink, Cognitive Dissonance & Tribalism | Simon Brown

Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said, "To renounce liberty is to renounce being human."

In this interview, Simon Brown talks about groupthink, cognitive dissonance, tribalism, between-group tension, and coercive control from a psychological point of view. He utilises historical experiments from people like Stanley Milgram, Jane Elliot, and Philip Zimbardo to explore what has been happening in Melbourne (and, indeed, across the world) with various government responses to the pandemic. Not only this, Simon explores how people are more divided than ever before. However, he provides hope—hope that we can, once again, band together in the spirit of Mateship and, in the midst of distress, as we have so many times before, connect for a better future.

Simon Brown is a Melbourne-based clinical counsellor, psychotherapist, and behavioural specialist. He is an expert in forensic risk assessment and treatment, complex mental health, and the treatment of challenging behaviours. Having worked in maximum-security prisons, Simon has experienced first-hand the power of groupthink, the toxic nature of division, and the curative power of speaking the truth.

27: Stress & Trauma | Stephen Porges, PhD

27: Stress & Trauma | Stephen Porges, PhD

Have you ever wondered how your body is influenced by its surroundings, especially your relationships with others? In his interview with The Emil Barna Podcast, Dr Stephen Porges digs deeply into his Polyvagal Theory, applying it to stress, PTSD, COVID-19, anxiety, and sets out a path towards healing—a new way forward.

Stephen W. Porges, PhD, is Distinguished University Scientist at Indiana University, where he is the founding director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium within the Kinsey Institute.  He holds the position of Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Maryland.

Dr. Porges served as president of both the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences and is a former recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award.  He has published approximately 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers across several disciplines including anesthesiology, biomedical engineering, critical care medicine, ergonomics, exercise physiology, gerontology, neurology, neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, psychometrics, space medicine, and substance abuse. His research has been cited in ~40,000 peer-reviewed publications.

In 1994 Dr. Porges proposed Polyvagal Theory (PVT), a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behaviour and emphasizes the importance of the physiological state in the expression of behavioural problems and psychiatric disorders.

He is the author of The Polyvagal Theory: Neurophysiological foundations of Emotions, Attachment, Communication, and Self-regulation (Norton, 2011), The Pocket Guide to the Polyvagal Theory: The Transformative Power of Feeling Safe (Norton, 2017),co-editor of Clinical Applications of the Polyvagal Theory: The Emergence of Polyvagal-Informed Therapies (Norton, 2018), and Polyvagal Safety (Norton, 2021).

Dr. Porges is also the creator of a music-based intervention, the Safe and Sound Protocol™, which is used by more than 2,000 therapists to improve spontaneous social engagement, reduce hearing sensitivities, and improve language processing, state regulation and spontaneous social engagement.

26: The Fellowship Of The Ring | Tolkien | Psychological Book Review

26: The Fellowship Of The Ring | Tolkien | Psychological Book Review

Psychotherapist Emil Barna surveys the psychological and clinical themes that appear in his reading of Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. He explores Frodo's call to action, the classic good vs. evil dichotomy, fear, trauma, depression, courage, self-esteem, and a whole lot more through the eyes (and words) of the characters in this book.

From Gandalf's retelling of the story of the Ring, the addictive grip the Ring has on Sméagol, Tom Bombadil's carefree attitude, Elrond's shrewdness, the hobbits' courage, and Gimli's no-nonsense approach, Emil covers how we can all learn lifelong lessons from this book, making us more aware and brave human beings.
