20: Martial Arts & Confidence | Damien Chaurémootoo

What's martial arts got to do with confidence? In this episode of The Emil Barna Podcast, Damien Chaurémootoo delves deeply into his roots as a martial artist, beginning with his childhood in Mauritius and migration to Australia. He talks about coaching young kids and adults into becoming more confident human beings through his unique approach to the martial arts, bullying, mental health, and discipline.

Damien's name is engraved on a commemorative plaque in the province of
Henan, China—a plaque erected on the occasion of the great return of Wing Chun to the Shaolin Temple that also bears the names of Robert Downey Jr. and William Cheung, Grand Master of the traditional Wing Chun and direct disciple of the legendary Ip Man. It was under the tutelage of Grand Master William Cheung that Damien perfected his mastery of Wing Chun Kung-Fu and became an instructor.  Damien’s passion for martial arts began after watching movies featuring Bruce Lee, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's since honed his skills in Wing Chun Kung-Fu, aikido, kickboxing, combat training, fear management, and motivational speaking.

Damien Chauremootoo worked as an Operations Manager and Chief Instructor at the global HQ of the Global Traditional Wing Chun Kung-Fu Association in Melbourne, Australia. He's trained alongside and formed partnerships with people such as Grand Master William Cheung, Shihan Hiroo Mochizuki, Sam Greco, Master Joe Sayah, Master Eric Oram, Scott Adkins, Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Michael Jai White, George St-Pierre, and many more.

Co-founder of Empower Tactical, Damien shares his martial arts knowledge with civilians to teach them practical skills and awareness. He's worked with doctors, police officers, security guards, school groups, and young kids.

Vickie Simos is a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist who is also a Fourth Degree Black Belt in the Filipino martial art of Doce Pares Eskrima (stick fighting) and a Second Degree Black Belt in Anjukanpo Karate. 17: How Lockdowns Impact Mental Health | In Conversation with Samir Banga

17: How Lockdowns Impact Mental Health | In Conversation with Samir Banga

What's the difference between suicidal ideation and self-harm? Are we experiencing a collective trauma? Has mental health gotten worse during this pandemic? What can we do about it?

In this episode, Emil is interviewed by Samir Banga, the Executive Lawyer at Banga Legal in NSW (offices in Sydney). Samir is on the front foot against discrimination by virtue of the current mandates which he argues to be an overreach of powers. Samir has extensive experience in criminal, quasi-criminal and administrative law. In this realm, he knows the inside of a courtroom like the back of his hand.

Samir interviews Emil via Instagram Live ( he can be found using this handle @samir.banga and @bangalegal) and the video can be viewed there as well as on Emil's YouTube and Instagram accounts.

16: A Neuroscientist On Lockdowns | James H. Fallon, PhD

16: A Neuroscientist On Lockdowns | James H. Fallon, PhD

Emil interviews James H. Fallon, PhD to get his insights into COVID-19 lockdowns. Dr Fallon is a neuroscientist and psychopathy researcher and has been an authority on matters relating to neuroscience, mental illness, neuropsychiatry/psychology, and psychopathy for decades. He was very gracious with his time, exploring current events relating to governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Fallon has delivered a monumental TED Talk on psychopaths and wrote a memoir on his experiences called The Psychopath Inside.

In this hilarious, sombre, and intellectually stimulating episode, he and Emil explore a topic Dr Fallon hasn't yet done so openly: lockdowns. They touch on the effects of lockdowns on the most impoverished, how some kids might actually benefit from homeschooling, how governments appear to be becoming more authoritarian in disposition, recent Victorian and New South Wales lockdowns (including protests), and killer clowns.

Strap in, this was a fun (and sombre) one!

15: What is Hypnosis? | Juanita Smith

15: What is Hypnosis? | Juanita Smith

Emil interviews Juanita Smith on all things hypnosis-related.

Born in the 1970’s, Juanita grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand under the care of a traumatised mother and her seven-year-old brother. As a baby, Juanita was so unwell with ear infections that she lost all hearing in one ear and partial hearing in the other. At two, Juanita was temporarily placed in out-of-home care and then raised with various relatives. Surrounded by poverty, trauma, and addiction, Juanita followed that path for some time before making a decision to take control, pursue freedom, and live the life of her dreams.

Having an entrepreneurial spirit, Juanita embarked on various careers and business ventures over the years, ending with her current role of working with people to overcome their addictions and underlying trauma through hypnosis. Her book, Is It A Habit Or An Addiction?lays out a step-by-step system to overcome addiction from food, cigarettes, drugs, gambling, and others.
