EP 057 'The Bullied Brain' with Dr Jen Fraser and 'Institutional Betrayal' with Jonathan Wilson

Lived experience and the true understanding of what happens to the bullied brain, by Dr Jennifer Fraser author of 'The Bullied Brain' and Jonathan Wilson former senior lead at the Metropolitan Police, bullied out of his career.

Jennifer Fraser is an author, award-winning educator, and consultant. She has a PhD in Comparative Literature and her books have always focused on how we have the capacity to transform ourselves. We can go from being readers to writers of culture. We can reject society's demands that we suppress our emotions and instead come alive with them. We can question the bullying dynamic we've been raised in and ask wouldn't empathy and compassion be healthier? Her fourth book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health, introduces brain research into our wellness journey. It shares the empowering and inspiring neuroscience and neurobiology that informs the evidence-based practices we can all do in order to have happier, healthier, more high-performing brains.

Jonathan has over 28 years’ experience working for the Metropolitan Police (United Kingdom) with much of that time in senior leadership roles.
Jonathan’s police leadership required him to work with diverse communities, businesses, local authorities, across a number of government departments including the Home Office and Mayor of London’s office and internationally.
He has considerable experience in prevention strategies, legislative changes, working with vulnerable groups, and partnership work.
Jonathan retired from the Police Service in 2020 after a traumatic experience of workplace bullying,  a period of his life that impacted on him considerably. He now dedicates much of his time to education and challenging workplace bullying behaviors which he says is entirely preventable and creating positive workplace culture.
Jonathan now talks widely across social media and to businesses in person about psychosocial safety at work.
He says, “Psychosocial safety is a leadership issue, and how you interact with people impacts their whole lives. It is therefore the most pressing issue of the contemporary workplace to master. Teaching your leaders interpersonal communications skills that empower not diminish. At the heart of bullying is always complex human dynamics and often unethical behaviours, corruption, discrimination, and harassment will emerge as the reason. Look deeper.”
Jonathan lives in Cornwall and has also established a  business running holiday cottages which allows him to pursue the many outdoor activities he enjoys both on and off the water.#pledgetoendbullying#stophurtatwork

Dr. Lee became well-known to the public by leading a group of mental health professional colleagues in breaking the silence about the immediate past U.S. president’s dangerous psychology and publishing the New York Times bestseller, “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 37 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President” (Macmillan, 2017 and 2019).   The volume proceeded from an ethics conference she organized at Yale School of Medicine, which led to her consulting with over 50 members of the U.S. Congress.
Currently, Dr. Bandy Lee is president of the World Mental Health Coalition, the largest professional organization to address the problem of dangerous leadership and its contribution to a ‘psychological pandemic.’
During medical school, she obtained an additional divinity degree to expand her understanding of the human condition. Trained at Yale and Harvard Universities, she was chief resident at Massachusetts General Hospital and a research fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health.  At Yale Law School, she taught clinical courses covering the mental health aspects of asylum law, criminal justice, and veteran legal services.  Her clinical practice consists of psychiatric services at maximum-security prisons and in state hospitals, in addition to working as an expert witness for civil and criminal courts.  At Yale College, she was a popular professor who taught the Global Health Studies course, “Violence: Causes and Cures.” Most recently, she accepted the invitation to co-found an institute on violence prevention at Union Theological Seminary with multiple world experts in the field.

The World Mental Health Coalition is an educational organization that assembles mental health experts to collaborate with other disciplines for the betterment of public mental health and public safety.  It attempts to step in where the psychiatric establishment failed in societal leadership, or profited (as did the American Psychiatric Association) by protecting powerful political figures over the public.
Dr. Bandy Lee is searching for Family Court stories and is currently editing, "The Dangerous Case Of The Family Court." She is taking submissions for the book as well.

The Psychopaths Among Us with Bill Hirstein

The Psychopaths Among Us with Bill Hirstein

Sometimes, in this world of ours, we encounter madness and monsters. And if we have grown up in environments where our sense of safety and survival has curried us to be ready for danger, well, we end up looking for it – whether we want to or not.

It doesn't mean that we walk around life like we are Lara Croft – armed and ready to take down the bad guys. No, it’s more we are like the girl in the horror movie that everyone is yelling at “No! Don’t run back into the house stupid! What are you doing?!”

Because who’s waiting for us in the house?  That’s right. The ax-wielding psychopath.

I know that’s extreme and I’m just trying to be lighthearted but the truth is scary than horror-movie fiction.

There are psychopaths among us in our every day lives. And sometimes, for some of people, they are so close to us its frightening once we know who they really are.

But what is a psychopath? Are they only crazed murderers? Violent criminals? Are they always only the obvious abhorrent members of our society?

Or is the answer even more frightening than that?

So in this episode Ameé speaks with William Hirstein. Bill is both a philosopher and a scientist, having published numerous scientific articles, including works on consciousness and sociopathy. He is the author of several books, including Brain Fiction: Self-Deception and the Riddle of Confabulation (MIT, 2005), and Mindmelding: Consciousness, Neuroscience, and the Mind’s Privacy (Oxford, 2012) and the latest one: Responsible Brains: Neuroscience, Law, and Human Culpability (The MIT Press)

In this episode, you will hear:

    • What does this concept of psychopathy and sociopathy come from? How did it enter our culture and the field of psychology?
    • And how is it determined if someone is one?
    • Does this evaluation have to be performed by a trained professional? What are the legal implications?
    • What are the core sets of features then of someone with psychopathy?
    • Why is it important to be able to have label on someone? Does it just help satisfy our curiosity or are there implications from it?
    • Is a psychopath ever able to take responsibility ever for their actions?

Student Protesters: Entitled, Narcissistic, Sociopathic Crybabies

Student Protesters: Entitled, Narcissistic, Sociopathic Crybabies
From high school to grad school, student protesters- unhappy about election results- are regressing to crying rooms and coloring books. Why? Because many in this overindulged generation feel entitled to get their way all the time. Some claim to be in fear for their lives or for those of their classmates, but their narcissism is showing. Others, with sociopathic traits, seize upon the media's false messages about Trump's campaign to express their own bigotry. Today's guest, Doug Giles, author of Pussification: The Effeminization of the American Male, and Founder and Editor of ClashDaily.com, calls out these protesters and says, The wuss gene is on full display. Even worse, many colleges are enabling them, giving in to their demands for perks to soothe their alleged emotional distress. It's a good thing modern warfare doesn't depend solely on boots on the ground - because many in the next generation are not up to the job. They'd run home to Mommy when things got uncomfortable.
