Boys and Mental Health: Combating Anxiety and Depression in the Digital Era with Lisa Mustard

Boys and Mental Health: Combating Anxiety and Depression in the Digital Era with Lisa Mustard

In my latest episode, I explore the critical issue of boys' mental health, drawing inspiration from Jonathan Haidt's research. (Find the article here.) I delve into the significant shift from physical to digital activities since the 1970s and its impact on the mental and social development of young boys and men. I discuss the challenges posed by the digital world, including video games and smartphones, and emphasize the importance of balancing this with real-world interactions. I highlight the role of parents in modeling healthy behaviors and setting standards for technology use, physical activity, and emotional expression.

I give practical advice for parents to support their sons, including encouraging physical activities, understanding different learning styles, and fostering social connections. I stress the importance of teaching boys to express their emotions healthily and building resilience through problem-solving and independence. Additionally, I remind parents to be vigilant about signs of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues in their sons.

Ready to level up your emotional and mental wellness? Get a FREE consultation with me -  Fill out this form to get started!

I conclude the episode with a reminder about the importance of addressing personal mental health issues for the benefit of our children. I encourage my listeners to seek professional support and underscore the role of parents in shaping their children's mental health.

Exploring Plant Medicine: Psychedelics, Ceremonies, and Therapeutic Insights with Pedro

In this episode we are discussing the transformative power of plant medicine.

My guest is a very skilled plant medicine healer; however due to the laws around psychedelics we are keeping his identity underwraps. So for this episode, his name is Pedro which he picked after the plant he works with, the san pedro cactus.

Pedro shares his personal journey, revealing what drew him to the sacred work of plant medicine. He discusses the various substances and the deep relationships formed during ceremonies. He also gives you a glimpse into the rituals and experiences.

For therapists, he will offer insights on working with individuals post-experience, emphasizing the importance of containment and allowing the experience to naturally unfold.

Guided Meditation for Releasing Anxiety with Lisa Mustard

Guided Meditation for Releasing Anxiety with Lisa Mustard

This is a brand-new format and something I've been wanting to create for quite some time. This week's episode is a guided meditation.

I listen to guided meditations when I have issues going to sleep, and since October 7th, I've had trouble falling asleep. Usually, I turn to the Mindfulness app and pick a meditation or music and within a few minutes, I'm relaxed and asleep.

I have been thinking about writing my own guided meditations and I just went ahead and decided, you know what? I'm doing it!  And with everything that is going on in the world right now, I'm hearing from a lot of you that you're having a hard time with anxiety. You're having a hard time with feelings of sadness, and I totally understand.

This guided meditation should not be listened to while driving or when you want energy. It's best for when you want to relax and fall asleep.

I hope you enjoy this guided meditation and it helps you! If you'd like more guided meditations, send me an email: lisa@lisamustard.com and let me know.

    Attachment Styles Part1

This episode is a podcast takeover with the guys from Shrink Think podcast. We decided to split this episode up into 2 parts because it’s chock full of attachment style information. We discuss the 4 attachment styles - secure, avoidant, anxious and disorganized. As we get going with the episode, I'm catching up with the Shrink Think guys, Aaron Potratz and Nathan Hawkins, 2 therapists in private practice in Oregon. Then we dive into attachment styles and how they can play out. It’s a fun and casual talk and we hope you find it entertaining and enlightening!

Healing from Within: The Basics of Internal Family Systems with Dr. Richard C. Schwartz and Moshe Norman, LCSW

Healing from Within: The Basics of Internal Family Systems with Dr. Richard C. Schwartz and Moshe Norman, LCSW

This is quite a unique episode. It’s about an hour-long conversation that Dr. Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, had with a group of mental health clinicians. He’s sharing his IFS model and taking questions from the group. The group is Mondays with Moshe and you’ll hear from its creator, Moshe Norman, in just a few minutes. But I wanted to tell you a few things about the episode before you get to the main content.

This is a recording of a live conversation. The audio at times isn’t the best. However, it’s clear enough that you should be able to make out what is being said and asked. Dr Scwartz’s audio is great but some of the audio from the group is a little fuzzy or just not so clear.

The group is composed of mental health clinicians who are mainly Jewish so you may hear some phrases or words that you aren’t familiar with however the content shared is definitely clinical and not from a religious perspective. If you’re unsure of what something means or you’re curious to learn more, feel free to reach out to me at lisa at lisamustard.com.

And one more thing, the information provided is solely for educational purposes and should not be a substitute for any work you are doing with your doctor or therapist.

Want to sign up for Mondays with Moshe? Send an email to mnormanlcsw@gmail.com and ask to be a part of the group.

Midlife Milestones: 5 Key Lessons Learned at 50 with Lisa Mustard

Midlife Milestones: 5 Key Lessons Learned at 50 with Lisa Mustard

In this episode of 'The Therapy Show with Lisa Mustard,' I delve into the profound lessons I've learned as I step into my 50s.

    1. Self-Acceptance: I've discovered the power of self-acceptance in my 40s, and now at 50, it feels even more solidified. I've learned to recognize my strengths and weaknesses and work with them, not against them. Self-acceptance doesn't mean complacency, but rather acknowledging where I am now and the potential for growth.

    2. Prioritizing Health: In my 40s, I realized the importance of living an optimal and vibrant healthy life. I've maintained strength training and healthy eating, which have helped me cope with midlife hormonal shifts. I've also focused on quality sleep and stress management. I believe it's never too late to get into shape, and I'm living proof of that.

    3. Value of Time: I've gained a deeper appreciation for the value of time and the importance of spending it with loved ones and on activities that truly matter. Balancing my time between work, family, and this podcast has been a challenge, but it's a challenge I'm learning to navigate.

    4. Resilience: By the age of 50, I've gone through a variety of life's ups and downs, which have taught me resilience. These experiences have not only made me a better therapist but also a stronger woman. I've learned that I can do hard things, I can choose to grow, and I have choices.

    5. Life-Long Learning: In my 40s, I learned how to podcast, market my courses, and secure a sponsor for my show. As I step into my 50s, I'm excited to see what new skills and experiences await me, starting with my new interest!

It’s important to stress that these episodes are not meant to take the place of any work you’re doing with your therapist or doctor. In fact, please run these ideas by your counselor or doctor before you act on them to make sure you are ready for them or even fit for the suggestions. I can’t stress this enough, each person is unique and their situation is unique so please talk to your dr before starting anything new I may be suggesting.
