Middle Kids keep the faith and the focus

Middle Kids keep the faith and the focus

Since the moment we heard the first strains of ‘Edge of Town’ and ‘Your Love’ back in 2016, we’ve been in love with Middle Kids.

Through each release – 2018’s Lost Friends, 2021’s Today We’re The Greatest, and their new album Faith Crisis Pt 1 – the band have given us songs to cry to, songs that hug us, songs that make us want to sprint towards the horizon until we can’t run anymore. Faith Crisis Pt 1 is a very special record, sketching out the anxieties and joys of life in vivid colour.

The Tuckshop was excited to welcome Tim Fitz and Harry Day onto the show live!

Forest Hall take on the world

Forest Hall take on the world

Making music in this day and age is a tough business. Making a living out of it is even harder, but what makes a band take that step into creating a cohesive album of music that brings together years of mucking out with garage recordings?

Forest Hall have kept pushing through. Nearly eight years as a band with a lot of twists and turns, through the passion and pain, the band have created a body of work to be proud of.

You’ll Take On The World is a perfectly named record for an album that feels a long time coming, but is definitely worth the wait.

Mislav from Forest Hall joined The Tuckshop to talk through the record and have a great yarn!

STUMPS hit their second album out of the park

STUMPS hit their second album out of the park

There’s a comforting sense of familiarity when listening to STUMPS’ brand new album Arcadia. This is an album carved from distinctive influences, from the towering indie rock of the early 2010s, to Talking Heads to the dance rock of the 2000s.

Of course, it’s all delivered with that fresh and fun STUMPS sound, with brilliant songwriting and pristine arrangements and the warm voice of Kyle Fisher.

Arcadia just hit shelves a couple of days ago, and we were very excited to be joined by the band live in the studio with us!

DZ Deathrays never forget why they rock

DZ Deathrays never forget why they rock

Form Bundaberg to the world. Over more than 15 years and more than 15 countries, DZ Deathrays have slowly, but surely, been taking over the world and with R.I.F.F, the groups sixth album, they’re conquering it.

Through their new label, DZ Worldwide, the band, which has grown from 2 to 3 to the currently touring 4, have never been afraid to re-invent, try new things, push their comfort zones. They’re also on a massive tour with the legends that are Regurgitator (celebrating 25 years of Unit) and Custard and through it all they’ve cemented their legendary status.

Shane, Simon and Luke joined Mick in the studio to talk RIFF, Rock and Writing

KESMAR can't stop chasing the rainbows

KESMAR can't stop chasing the rainbows

From folk to disco. It’s not a path often travelled, but Nathan Hawes, AKA Kesmar, has done just that in his musical journey and it has culminated in the release of his gorgeous debut album, Always Chasing Rainbows.

It’s a triumph of funk, disco and glistening ‘70s-esque string, keys and chord progressions. If you’re after some music to brighten your day, then this is it!

We were lucky enough to have Kesmar with us to chat about the record on The Tuckshop.

Death by Denim - From house to club

Death by Denim - From house to club

Not many bands had a bigger 2022 than Death By Denim.

The Perth band released their critically acclaimed second album Moonbow, they hit the road on a huge album tour, they signed a new record deal, and casually took on Harry Styles’ Watermelon Sugar for triple j’s Like A Version.

And in classic fashion, the band are now keeping the good vibes going by releasing a brilliant, gleaming new EP called My House Is A Club. They’re currently in the middle of their tour, and we were so happy to be joined by Nik and Palle from Death by Denim.

Gena Rose Bruce explores the deep without holding her breath

Gena Rose Bruce explores the deep without holding her breath

Music can make you feel a certain way, or can you make music feel a certain way? When you listen to Gena Rose Bruce’s music, you’re never quite sure if you were in that wistful, thoughtful and dreamy state before you started listening to it, or after. But one part always prevails. Love.

Gena’s music has the ability to make you really feel and transport you to a place where love endures. It’s full of emotion, place and whimsy, but also a definite drive to help you discover (or destroy) yourself.

'Deep Is The Way' is the second album from the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s music and like her first from 2019, ‘Can’t Make You Love Me’, it’s packed full of heart-on-the-sleeve passion, admissions and a few little bops!

    Private Function - Calculated Mayhem

    Private Function - Calculated Mayhem

Is there a band in Australia that has more fun than Private Function? We think not.

Since they first cracked onto the scene in late 2016, the punks from Melbourne have made it their mission to deliver music that is punchy, energetic, enjoyable, and absolutely irreverent. Their new album, Hello Asshole, or as you might see it written, 370HSSV 0773H, is another blistering collection of tracks, including some we’ve already played on this show: ‘jusavinageez’ and ‘Seize & Destroy’.

We  welcomed Private Function’s frontman, Chris Penney, to the show to talk through why PF are still on top.

Urthboy savours the past and accepts the future

Urthboy savours the past and accepts the future

Not many artists have made as big an impact on Australian music as our guest today.

From his early years releasing music in the late ‘90s with his mates Luke Dubs and El Gusto (aka Hermitude), through to the ground-breaking outfit The Herd, his acclaimed solo career, and his tireless work with the label Elefant Traks, Urthboy has dedicated his career to uplifting those around him – and also, you know, releasing some bloody epic music.

He’s just released his seventh studio album Savour – an album full of heart, nostalgia, and reflection. We were so incredibly pleased to welcome Urthboy to the Tuckshop.

George Mooney explores her own sound

If you’ve been to a festival or been near any stage over the last decade in Australia, you’ve probably encountered our next guest.

Sydney’s Georgia Mooney is a beloved fixture of the local music scene, most prominently as a member of the stellar group All Our Exes Live In Texas, who’ve toured the global and snagged an ARIA Award for their album When We Fall.

Now, Georgia Mooney is stepping out on her own with her debut solo single called War Romance. It’s a gorgeous song, and we were so happy to welcome Georgia to the Tuckshop to tell us all about it!

    Hazlett booms and blooms

Hazlett may not be a household name in Australia, but if you have a quick glance on Spotify, you will see that he has streaming numbers in the tens of millions. His chillingly beautiful indie-folk has a way of soothing your soul, and also telling a delicate story.

His brilliant debut Album, Bloom Mountain, is out now and already it’s being noticed all around the world, and certainly in his home country as well!. All the way from Sweden, we were excited to welcome Hazlett to The Tuckshop!

    Bright. Blue. Babitha.

    Bright. Blue. Babitha.

When you make the move to the city from a rural area, there’s no doubt it’s a scary proposition. Making friends and fitting in can be a challenge, let alone pursuing your passions. Our guest today not only did that, but has established herself into the local music scene so well, you may not even realise she is actually a country gal.

Babitha burst onto the scene in 2019 seemingly out of nowhere, but with such a complete sound, thoughtful lyrics and a stunning voice, you take the time to stop and listen and appreciate this talent that we are so lucky to have in our midst.

With her debut record, Brighter Side of Blue, out now and a busy 2023 laid out in front of her, Babitha joined us in the 2ser studios for a chat!

WAAX take stock before burning bright

WAAX take stock before burning bright

Ever since the opening lines of Wisdom Teeth in 2014, we’ve been hooked on the driving and passionate Brisbane-based punk of WAAX. Their path has been a tumultuous one, but after Big Grief, their debut album was released in 2019, the band delivered some visceral live shows to legions of fans before everything suddenly shut-down a year later.

With so much uncertainty around the future of live music, it was a tough time to know what was coming next, and for WAAX, a band reliant on performing, what was next?

Now we know, as their second album, ‘At Least I’m Free’ has been unleashed on the world and it’s a huge step in the evolution of this band.

Driven by personal experience and delivered with the same passion we’ve come to know and love from the whole group, but in particular, lead singer, Marie ‘Maz’ Devita.

She’s not yelling, she just Italian, and we were excited to welcome Maz from WAAX to The Tuckshop!

Gang of Youths – Megastars in realtime

Gang of Youths – Megastars in realtime

In a handful of years, Gang of Youths have grown from a beloved Sydney band into a global sensation, and arguably Australia’s biggest export playing right now.

Earlier this year, they released angel in realtime, the long-awaited and highly anticipated followup to 2017’s Go Farther In Lightness, which won them basically every award it could at the ARIAs and was one of the best rock records of the decade.

In so many ways, angel in realtime is classic Gang of Youths – full-hearted, open, stadium-sized. But there are also plenty of new sounds and influences bubbling under the surface.

They’re back in Australia on their biggest ever tour, and we’re so excited to welcome bassist Max Dunn to the Tuckshop this week.

    Phil Jamieson Isn’t Just Somebody

    Phil Jamieson Isn’t Just Somebody

So, what happens when lead singers of mighty rock bands branch out on their own, taking all of that powerful stage presence and musical drive into the solo sphere?

What happens when the collective becomes a singular? How does it affect the creative process, but more importantly, what happens to the psyche of someone branching out on their own?

We found out on The Tuckshop as we chatted to Grinspoon’s charismatic, cheeky and super talented front man, Phil Jamieson about his debut solo record, Somebody Else and he performed the title track live in the 2ser studio!

Emma Volard stakes their god-like claim

Emma Volard stakes their god-like claim

A debut album is a huge moment in an artists life - it’s a statement, an arrival, a declaration of who you are and what you stand for. And you won’t find many more powerful debuts than Emma Volard’s electric album, Deity.

Deity is a neo-soul and fusion triumph, a 12-track body of work that pushes at the boundaries of genre and carves a way forward for Australian jazz music.

It’s one of the year’s most arresting releases, and we’re so excited to welcome Emma Volard to the Tuckshop to chat about how it all came together.

Jaguar Jonze on her debut and what it means to CUT through

Jaguar Jonze on her debut and what it means to CUT through

“We’re both just overcook noodles that are floundering about on the stage” – Jaguar Jonze

Australia is not short of incredibly talented pop stars, and Jaguar Jonze is right at the top.

Jonze’s music is explosive and challenging, an ambitious melding of alt-rock, bubblegum pop, punk, and something else that’s entirely unique to her.

Through EPs like ANTIHERO and Diamonds & Liquid Gold, she’s asserted herself as one of this country’s most arresting songwriters and performers, and that has only been cemented with the release of her debut album BUNNY MODE

It’s a powerful reckoning of an album, and we were so happy to speak to Jaguar about how it all came together on The Tuckshop!

Royal Chant will never be a waste of time

Royal Chant will never be a waste of time

Some bands work a little, some work hard and then there’s Royal Chant.

Back in 2009, a new trio from Port Macquarie, the central coast of NSW, released a track and video on Bandcamp. It was called Coughing Fits and it started something glorious! 13 years on, almost to the day and Royal Chant have released their 9th album, ‘Anyways and also Sorry’ and it continues the prolific, but high quality of a group driven to release, perform and share their musical path with the world.

To celebrate number nine, the fact they played 2ser’s own The Band Next Door last week and just because it’s well overdue, we welcomed Mark Spence to The Tuckshop!

Sahara Beck blooms into the hero we needed

Watching the evolution of Sahara Beck from up-and-coming Brisbane artist to full-blown alt-pop stardom has been a joy to behold and it continues as Sahara releases her latest EP, And Her Kryptonite

Serving as bookends to the last couple of years, 2019’s Queen of Hearts and this EP are actually part of a pair and will be released as a double EP on vinyl, showing two sides to Sahara’s music, including a killer nostalgic cover!

As Sahara prepares to perform in Sydney, we caught up with her beforehand!

Baby Velvet skips the baby steps and goes it alone

Baby Velvet skips the baby steps and goes it alone

Musicians start solo. This would be true of every budding artist that picks up the stick, a pick or places their fingers on a keyboard. From learning their craft, to finding their voice, the pursuit of creating music yourself and broadcasting it to the world is a visceral and emotional outlet.

Our next guest has travelled the world, had her music in the top 10 of the charts and met fans and artists from around the world, but has never released a solo debut album, until now.

Baby Velvet, aka Hannah Crofts, has delivered an album to our ears that will make you melt, make you think, all the while flowing through your body with warm and rich tones.

Please Don’t Be In Love With Someone Else’ is the name of the record and we were stoked to chat to Baby Velvet on the Tuckshop!
