The Science of Emotional Dysregulation: What Is It and How It Affects Us (feat. Dr. Cindy Hovington)

In episode 69 of The Therapy4Dads Podcast, join host Travis Goodman as he welcomes guest Dr. Cindy Hovington to discuss what emotional dysregulation is from a scientific perspective.  They delve into the term "dysregulation" and its internal and external aspects regarding emotional events. The discussion takes a deep dive into the science behind dysregulation and its effects physiologically and neurologically. The conversation continues with strategies that parents can practice to regulate their emotions, including mindfulness and practicing gratitude with their children. The speakers also highlight the importance of modeling emotions and communication to help children develop emotional skills. Tune in to learn about emotion regulation skills and how they take time to develop while requiring patience, repetition, and grace.

Dr. Cindy Hovington is a neuroscience Ph.D. based in Montreal. Her research focused on schizophrenia and psychosis in youth, particularly the emotional and cognitive aspects of mental health. As a parent, she struggled with handling her children's tantrums despite her extensive knowledge on brain development and emotion regulation. This inspired her to start the blog Curious Neurons, primarily discussing the science of emotions and child development. Recently, she has shifted her focus to emotional and mental health in both children and parents, extending her work to a free resource for parents. She also created an app called Wonder Grade for children aged three to eight, aimed at teaching emotion regulation skills. Cindy is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and helping others manage big emotions effectively.

Effective Parenting: The Evolution of Understanding (feat. Jon Fogel)

Effective Parenting: The Evolution of Understanding (feat. Jon Fogel)

In EPISODE 68 of The Therapy4Dads Podcast, Jon Fogel, parenting educator (@wholeparent), discusses the myths surrounding traditional parenting and the need for effective parenting education. He delves into his personal journey and various experiences, including his training in trauma-informed care and child development and his view on codependency and emotional regulation. Jon also emphasizes the importance of individualized approaches to parenting and how previous generations' lack of access to knowledge affected their parenting practices. The focus is on education rather than punishment and understanding behavior as a symptom of a deeper issue. Join host Travis Goodman and guest Jon Fogel on this enlightening episode about parenting beyond the myths.

Jon Fogel is a parenting expert who found his calling through personal experience. After becoming a parent himself, Jon realized that there was a fundamental dissonance in the way he was parenting versus the counseling techniques he was studying. He devoured books on child development, trauma-informed care, and psychology. As a licensed foster parent, Jon also received training from the state which further informed his techniques. When his friends started seeking advice for their parenting struggles, Jon's detailed responses earned him the title of parenting expert. He began sharing his knowledge on social media and quickly gained popularity because his techniques worked and he was a rare male voice in the parenting space. Jon is now an expert in anti-punishment techniques and firmly believes that parenting can be done more effectively and compassionately.

Polyvagal Theory: Redefining Our Understanding of the Autonomic Nervous System, Men & Emotions (feat. Jan Winhall)

Polyvagal Theory: Redefining Our Understanding of the Autonomic Nervous System, Men & Emotions (feat. Jan Winhall)

In EPISODE 64 of The Therapy4Dads Podcast, we dive deep into the topic of unhealthy masculinity and its impact on men and boys. Our guest Jan Winhall, author of "Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model," shares her insights and practical tools for healing trauma and regulating the nervous system. We discuss how men have been traumatized by unhealthy societal expectations and how therapists can be the first safe person in a man's life. We also explore the importance of integrating the mind and body, using body cards to manage emotions and the groundbreaking polyvagal theory for understanding the autonomic nervous system. Tune in to learn how to rewire your brain for vulnerability, heal attachment issues, and find the "sweet spot" of calm in your body.

Jan Winhall (@janwinhall) is an experienced trauma and addiction therapist who has been working with families, men and women, children, queer people, and everyone in between for over 40 years. Her passion for helping people heal from trauma began with working with women who were incest survivors in a hospital setting. Jan realized that she didn't feel comfortable with the way that women were being pathologized, which led her to hunt for a more non-pathologizing approach. Through her work with these women, Jan discovered the practice of focusing, which is Jemlin's work in connecting with the intuitive process in the body. This led Jan to Steve Porges' work with the autonomic nervous system, which she now also incorporates into her practice. Jan's knowledge and experience in this area led her to writing her book in 2021, called Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model, which has since brought her closer to the Polyvagal Institute and Steve Porges himself. Jan's ultimate goal is to help people calm down their nervous systems and be able to heal from trauma and addiction.
