    WhysAdvice™ with FatDag

I was miserable. I was 263.5 lbs and was facing disciplinary action for multiple fitness assessment failures from the Air Force. I needed to lose weight and wanted to lose weight, but failed the many times that I tried. I found the support I needed to crush my goals. I want to walk you through the mindset needed to accomplish your own personal goals. I want to be your Wingman! WhysAdvice™ is a Lifestyle Brand focused on leveraging the power of WHY while broadcasting wellness ADVICE to an authentic community of Wingmen.

Kudos for @wwofficial for coming up with it. Knowing that this opportunity is a clean slate, somehow makes it different. I’m not picking up where I left off. Planning for the Corona Virus Interruption

Planning for the Corona Virus Interruption

I’m not a doctor. I don’t have a clue about the corona virus and please refrain from commenting on the specifics - there are plenty of online resources for those interested. I do want to talk about the effects of it on your journey though.

From what I’ve been seeing locally, gatherings of thousands of people are being cancelled/postponed. Mostly college classes, grade schools, major sporting events, and conventions.

If you have a child in school, and their school chooses the online route for the rest of the semester, you’re now gonna find a disruption into your routine. That’s what this post is about. I beg you - stay on topic within this post.

🚨 If you dropped your kids off at school and went to the gym, you’re gonna need a plan B.

🚨 If you’re used to eating a lunch by yourself because you’re the only one home, you’re gonna need a plan B.

🚨 If you have a kid in college who is now home early, expect to have a house full of college students who like to order pizza. Have a plan B.

🚨 If you’re now suddenly working from home, your pantry is far more accessible than it is from your office. Have a plan B.

🚨 If you’re now working from home, your parking space is a lot closer. The restroom is a lot closer. Your step count will reflect that. Have a plan B.

🚨 The added stress, the change in your routines and lifestyle will require you to adjust. You’re capable of doing so!

The more you start thinking about that now, the more prepared you will be for the unexpected. It’s totally manageable, it’s just gonna take you thinking through the scenarios and a plan.

    Weight Bias

    Weight Bias

I manage my own social media so - yup - I get to see the judgmental comments and private messages I receive.

    Dear Redacted,

Don’t be sorry, it’s been a long journey and I’ve grown so much inside too. I’ve found a way to not let words like this impact me anymore. So I’m sure your apology makes you feel better about saying mean and hurtful things, but it’s totally unnecessary to apologize to me.

Clearly you haven’t been following along closely. That’s ok, you get to chose where you get your inspiration and what areas of your life you’d like to improve. You get to decide who you let in and who you tune out. That’s how this works best. But since you missed it - let me catch you up. I’ve addressed my weight gain many times on every platform I’m on. I don’t hide from it one bit.

There are periods of life where significant events are a contributing factor to incremental weight gain. In no particular order and certainly not a complete list, here are a few: Weddings, Retirement, Divorce, Birth of a child, Grief, College and your favorite, Bullying.

Shortly after I made goal and as a WW lifetime member learning to navigate my 2nd year of maintenance, I experienced three of those events. My new lifestyle wasn’t yet habitual nor cemented in my mindset, though I was doing ok pretending and learning. I shared what I knew and many followed along. I had the devastating opportunity to experience multiple periods of grief. Then in the midst of that, I retired after 27 years in the same military career. One person I really wanted to be there to celebrate with us, couldn’t because cancer doesn’t discriminate.

My weight crept up and comments just like yours flooded my inbox. They were following along much closer because that was about 7 months ago. It had a huge negative impact on me, even though I tried hard not to let it. I wanted to hide. I could have. I wanted to quit. I wanted to resign as a WW coach. I could have hid from the internet. I could have simply vanished. Many may not have noticed while others wished I had. Then WW switched their focus to wellness and I learned, despite my weight, I was well. Really well, internally.

So, I didn’t quit. I knew I needed the support of the many who didn’t judge me by my appearance. In your case though, it’s worse, because when you started following it was because you were inspired and likely found some qualities in me you admired or appreciated. Sadly you were able to toss that aside simply because I didn’t look the part anymore.

I didn’t lose my compassion for others. I didn’t lose the knowledge I gained, nor did I lose the skill set required to educate others. Your eyes, prevent you from seeing that in me and it’s ok. You’re encouraged to seek out inspiration where you need it as I said earlier. The parting shot prefaced with an apology though, is just mean, hurtful and bullying. Luckily you aren’t the first so I’ve found a way to ignore your hatred and still give you a response.

By not quitting, I’ve also learned many others find this part of the journey just as inspiring since so many can relate. Weigh re-gain is a very real thing for so many and the most common solution is to give up. Even with your encouraging message, I refuse to do so.

I’m here for me first. So, in doing so, I stay transparent knowing I’m not alone. Those who need to see this stage of the journey empower me to be better.

I don’t do it for your validation or approval. I do it for me, to continually improve and remind myself what’s at stake. If one person finds it helpful then great. If that person isn’t you - fine - I hope you find the inspiration you need to be a better person. Since there is obvious room for improvement.

I said I would never quit. I said I would never give up and that’s what I’m working on currently.

    I wish you well.

    Happy Thanksgiving

    Happy Thanksgiving

It was the best Thanksgiving ever, yet it never would have gotten your attention if you misjudged the occasion.

I was flying home one evening after a fun trip with other wingman. I was on very a short layover in Chicago when suddenly my phone rang. It was Janine, she said her father has asked to see us for the holiday. Amidst the tears and sobbing, I couldn’t make out all the words but I knew from her tone, it was urgent. We knew he was ill, but the news she received made it clear we needed to be there now.

I pulled out my laptop and began looking for flights first thing in the morning. The price prevented me from booking them and besides we didn’t really know how long we’d stay. Driving it is! I immediately booked a rental house about a block or so from her parents. The availability could only be explained as divine. In about 5 minutes the entire trip was planned, we would hit the road first thing in the morning but first I had to get home.

I boarded my flight from Chicago, landed safely, rushed home for a few hours of sleep and then dark and early we began the 16 hour drive. I don’t remember much of the drive. I just know we did it.

We pulled into our rental late in the evening. It was a nondescript beach house. It’s no place I’d ever consider buying and quite honestly wouldn’t consider staying there if the proximity wasn’t perfect. Yet more than the proximity being perfect, it allowed our last Thanksgiving as a family to be special.

We spent a couple fabulous days visiting and decided we’d host Thanksgiving, a few days early, from our temporary home. The cabinets had the most basic of amenities. The plates didn’t exactly match but no one cared. The table was crowded, just as it should be for a family as close as ours is. My Mom and Dad made the drive up and there the 7 us sat - giving Thanks for all God has provided. In fact it wasn’t even Thursday, yet none of us cared. They say home is where your heart is and for this week, our hearts were fully here.

This year, the empty place sitting at our table reminds me of what’s important. As we prepare to give thanks we now have to rely on our memories to fill the void. We will spend the day with tears talking about the past, giving thanks for the present and remaining hopeful for the future.

There are details I can’t remember from last year and 10 years from now, I’ll likely not remember even more of them. I don’t remember how many points I ate - I don’t even remember what I ate, but there will be things however I can never forget. That’s what this holiday season is about. It’s time to make memories, it’s time to live your best life. It’s time to celebrate with those you care about.

Enjoy today. Love like there’s no tomorrow but eat properly - confidently hopeful that there will be. Preserve your health - it’s the one gift you can give yourself that your friends and family can actually benefit from.

Give thanks to every person you interact with. They shape your journey, so reminding them how much they contribute is warranted. I’m incredibly blessed and grateful for our fellowship - Thank you for walking with me, and thank you for being my Wingman!

    Make it a Great Thanksgiving!
