    On today's podcast I celebrate the 75th birthday of Elvis Presley with a conversation with his cousin, Edie Hand who shares unique insights into his life, the humble beginnings that shaped him and her book, 'The Genuine Elvis' .

    Edie, who grew up in a small town called Burnout in Alabama is an author, an actress, a publisher and a movie producer.

    In her life she has suffered some huge setbacks but with "true grit" she has powered through and enjoyed considerable success.

    Her experiences led her to founding the Edie Hand Foundation and an organisation called 'Women of True Grit' to support and inspire women who have suffered trauma in their lives.

    She chats about her life, her career and at the tender age of 72 she shares her perspective on this "season" as she calls it.

    She says "you can't get to beautiful if you have not been through hard"

    Also, at the end of the show enjoy 'A Better Tomorrow' co-written by Edie and her daughter in law, Victoria Renee Hand and performed by Victoria.

    On the last podcast of 2022 I chat with Irish artist, Elizabeth Cope about her work and her solo exhibition, which runs until the 15th January at the Visual Centre at the Carlow Studio Gallery.

    Elizabeth who is 70 years young, chats about her exhibition "The palpable bump at the bridge of the nose" and the accompanying book.

    She chats about her process, the inspiration for her work and how some of her often unusual paintings come together including Giraffe Man, the various appearances of Rocky the Lobster and her Menopause series.

    Elizabeth also gives some practical advice for aspiring artists and hobbyists and says "the struggle is the secret of success".

    On today's podcast I welcome back Paul Niland of Lifeline Ukraine, who has been living in Kyiv for the last 20 years.

    Paul gives us a fresh update about life in Ukraine, his assessment of the progress against Putin's forces and the international help that is needed to end this "war" for once and for all.

    There is no doubt about the resolve of Ukraine and that victory is guaranteed, it is just a question of time.

    Paul also chats about Christmas and the decision of cities that have suffered huge losses to go ahead and put up their Christmas trees.

    Emily has a caring heart, an impulsive nature and a positive outlook which has led to an interesting career and this new business.

    She trained and practised as an intellectual disability nurse, took on roles in nursing management and was plunged into the most intense nursing scenario looking after a group of women with intellectual disabilities during the Covid outbreak.

    A huge interest in mindset and psychotherapy led to further education and this combined with her own experiences and personal challenges with mental health, led to her starting this new business.

    After 150 days of Putin's pointless, brutal war in Ukraine, Paul Niland, who has been living in Kyiv for nearly 20 years, gives us his perspectives of life in a war zone and his deep insights about what has happened and how it is likely to end. 

    He met Taoiseach, Micheál Martin on his recent trip to Ukraine and explained how the Russian brutality witnessed in some towns is the norm and not the exception.

    He doesn't talk about fear. he talks about anger and resolve.

    He doesn't talk about the war ending, he talks about victory for Ukraine.

    After 150 days it is easy to lose focus - we must keep listening, learning and understanding.
