    Since Step 12 suggests that readers continue practicing what they learn in cleaning up the wreckage of the past, Bill then wrote more on this lifelong practice. In Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Step 12, he wrote, “Here we begin to practice all the Steps in our daily lives so that we and those around us may find emotional sobriety.” This session will present a Personalized Version of the Steps with questions we can ask ourselves to measure our progress. He also spoke of the Steps as a “spiritual program of action,” choosing the word “principle” to emphasize that they are “a course of action.” “To show others precisely how we have recovered is the main purpose of this book.” - Forward to the First Edition.

    Dr. Trombley will present the findings from her Ph.D. research examining substantial barriers nonreligious individuals in AA have faced. Most of the participants only attend secular AA meetings as a result of these barriers. She identifies 6 main barriers:
    1) The belief that being nonreligious was a liability and that AA was religious;
    2) The religious undertone and “God talk” in meetings;
    3) Prayers in meetings;
    4) The Big Book;
    5) Discrimination;
    and 6) Fundamentalism.

    This presentation will walk through each of these barriers giving a brief description of what they mean and what she found. She will also briefly discuss how, despite these barriers, they were ultimately able to make AA work for them! She will briefly discuss how people were able to make AA successful for their recovery despite being nonreligious. The presentation will end with a more open discussion on the topic comments and questions from their own experiences or the experiences of others and where do we go from here.

    Wes L, author of “The TAO of Sobriety” and another panelist will discuss the common wisdom that “the steps are in order for a reason.” Perhaps instead of a linear process, it can be more like the light of clarity dawning upon the whole–a more parallel approach. Alternate ideas will be proposed and the traditional approach will be examined and perhaps defended, and then attendees will be invited to comment and question.

    William Schaberg, author of Writing the Big Book: Stepping back from his typical focus on the 18-month period from October 1937 to April 1939, Schaberg expands his scope to consider what was going on in the Fellowship from December 1934 to 1939 – a time that Bill Wilson called "The Flying-Blind Period." In this presentation, Schaberg underlines just how "blind" that period actually was and how clueless all the main participants were about where they were going to finally end up in mid-1939. Once again, this is a "challenging the creation myths" presentation, encouraging people to set aside many of the 'hallowed' stories they have so often heard about early A.A. history and inviting them to take an "unfiltered" look at what the facts actually tell us about that time.

    “I’m (your first name here) and I’m an alcoholic.” Most of us preface everything we say in an AA meeting with this, and we do so…religiously? How many of us have heard someone call out, “Who are you, what are you?” when anyone forgets to do it? Yet we mean very different things by the term “alcoholic.” Many believe that no “real alcoholic” can stay sober without divine help, and therefore no atheist with long term sobriety really belongs in AA. Hence the term is sometimes weaponized to exclude. With that in mind–what does it mean when secular AA members go along quietly with that norm? The medical community doesn’t use it anymore. Are their reasons good ones? Panelists with various views will discuss the positives and negatives inherent in this term in AA culture, and then attendees will be invited to comment and question.

    Episode 131: Dr. Louise Graves

    Episode 131: Dr. Louise Graves

    Dr. Louise Graves began her work life in the field of Therapeutic Recreation working in such settings as the Prison for Women in Kingston and group homes for various populations. She has a Ph.D. is in Psychology and Theology with an emphasis on Pastoral Psychotherapy from the Claremont School of Theology, California. She did her clinical internship at the Clinebell Institute and at the Walnut Valley Counseling Center and she worked at the San Gabriel Valley Association of Lesbians and Gays Counseling Center. With colleagues, she opened a multi-cultural counselling center in Pomona California that served a wide range of clients.

    Upon completion of her Ph.D., she had the opportunity to teach at the University of Winnipeg as Assistant Professor of Spirituality and Pastoral Care. Dr. Graves taught graduate level courses on various aspects of pastoral care and counselling as well as courses on spirituality in an ecumenical global context. Many individuals she works with struggle with questions of meaning and faith: they sense there is a sacredness to life but have found little help from traditional communities of faith. She has found that some wrestle with issues of guilt and shame and seek healing on that deep level. She believes that when we become more fully ourselves we make it that much easier for others to do the same. Our walking our particular path in a good way matters- not only for us, or our time. We matter- our happiness matters- our wellness matters.
