Hacking the pandemic's most popular software: Zoom (MCH2022)

Hacking the pandemic's most popular software: Zoom (MCH2022)
Last year we won Pwn2Own by demonstrating remote code execution, using a chain of three vulnerabilities, on the then latest version of the Zoom client. In this talk we would like to share all details of the vulnerabilities we found and how we combined them into a fully working exploit. When the pandemic required everyone to work from home, we saw a huge growth on the video conferencing market. It was this movement that made the organisation behind the world famous Pwn2Own competition decide to add an 'Enterprise Communications' category to last year’s competition. Everyone who was able to successfully demonstrate a zero-day attack against Zoom or Microsoft Teams would be rewarded $200,000. We decided to take them up on this challenge and started researching Zoom. This resulted in a working remote exploit against the at the time latest version of Zoom that would give the attacker full control over the victim’s system (CVE-2021-34407). During this talk, we will walk you through how we started our research, explain the vulnerabilities that were found and finally how those vulnerabilities were incorporated into the exploit that successfully performed the attack during the contest. about this event: https://program.mch2022.org/mch2022/talk/QVXXUP/

OTT: 152: Is Play an Essential Aspect of a Child's Learning Process in School?

OTT: 152: Is Play an Essential Aspect of a Child's Learning Process in School?

OTT: 152: Is Play an Essential Aspect of a Child's Learning Process in School?

Today we are talking about play. You see, most educators have a love-hate relationship with the word “play”. We are often told to add more rigor to our lessons. And to be on the same page at the exact same time as our co-workers down the hall. (Oh, how I despise that!)

We are also often told that play in school is a bad thing. Not TRUE. There is a real-world value to play. Through play, children have the opportunity to make sense of the world around them. Plus, it is developmentally appropriate. Playing has also been known to bring joy. Who doesn't need more joy in their lives? I know I do.

The idea that children learn best through play, is one of the reasons I love Makerspace so much. Makerspace feels like play. Yet, it is so much more involved. Kids are learning, thinking, creating, exploring, and yes, playing.

    Skills learned through play:

    Problem-Solving

    Creativity

    Imagination Building

    Innovation Skills

    Social and Emotional Skills

    Principles of Play:

    1. Limit restrictions
    2. Involve students
    3. Blur the lines between inside and outside
    4. Create the right environment
    5. Solve real-life problems
    6. Allow children to learn through experimentation
    7. Use a variety of materials
    8. Add water
    9. Use what you already have
    10. PLAY!

Open Source Business Models: making money & playing by the “rules” (foss4g2019)
The large number of sponsors, many of them very large companies, found at FOSS4G events indicates that there are significant commercial interests and opportunities associated with free and open source software (FOSS) technologies. This talk will describe several recurring patterns and business models for “monetizing” open source technologies, while also - and crucially - contributing back to FOSS communities. The talk will elaborate on the following three main models: 1. Providing value added services and support to open source projects 2. Leveraging/incorporating open source technologies to deliver products/SaaS 3. Open sourcing your commercial technology The talk will also provide real world examples of each of these models from the perspective of a commercial business that is actively engaged in a variety of FOSS activities. The talk will also examine some new and emerging trends including open data being incorporated into commercial platforms. None about this event: https://talks.2019.foss4g.org/bucharest/talk/X8X3EH/
