Det är den 25 augusti 2001 på Marsh Harbour Airport på Bahamas. I en taxi ute på flygplatsens landningsbana sitter den 22-åriga stjärnan. Utanför svajar palmerna och hettan trycker på, men inne i bilen brummar AC:n för fullt. När Aaliyah Haughton tittar ut genom bilrutan ser hon planet som ska ta henne hem. Runtom planet springer folk fram och tillbaka, redo att lasta det med all packning och hela teamet. På vägen hit fyllde de två plan, men nu trycks allt istället in i ett. 

Aaliyah har spelat in en musikvideo till sitt nya album. Hon är 22 år gammal och redan en av USAs hetaste stjärnor. Vid det här laget är hon både artist, skådespelare och modeikon. Dessutom drömmer hon om att gifta sig med pojkvännen Damon Dash. Aaliyah är på väg att ta över världen. 

Det är dags att gå ombord planet, men Aaliyah sitter kvar i taxin. Hon tar upp telefonen och ringer sin pojkvän. För ovanlighetens skull är hon ensam på resan - varken hennes mamma eller pojkvän har kunnat följa med den här gången. Aaliyah gillar inte att flyga, det lilla planet och den tunga lasten gör henne rädd. 

Faktum är att alla redan är medvetna om att planet är för tung lastat. Trots det sitter de till slut i sina säten och motorerna startar. 

Men planet kommer inte att hinna lämna Bahamas och Aaliyah kommer inte att komma hem igen. Det hinner knapp lyfta innan de kraschar. 

I flygplansvraket hittas Aaliyah sittandes kvar i sitt säte. Amerikas starkast lysande stjärna är död.
