Paul: Made a Minister by God

Paul: Made a Minister by God

There is only one ministry in the church, and that is being a servant of God. God is the one who makes men and women into ministers; we do not choose it ourselves, and we are not to judge His choice. Paul suffered afflictions for his association with Christ and the preaching of the Word, but he rejoiced. Suffering is part of the process of being made into a man or woman of God. VF-2274 Colossians 1:23-25

May 17 — Faithful Perseverance in Afflictions

May 17 — Faithful Perseverance in Afflictions

Whatever trials you may be going through, whether it is persecution or personal troubles, know this: Jesus is the light at the end of the tunnel. He is in the midst of it all, refining your faith to bring about supernatural, spiritual fruit. Trials test true faith. But true faith perseveres, because the One in you is greater than the trial.

The Lord's Dog: Part I - The Leash

The Lord's Dog: Part I - The Leash

    Job 1:1–2:10 (NIV)
    Prologue

1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

4 His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

    20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart.  The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;

may the name of the Lord be praised.”
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.  (JOB KNEW WHO WAS CALLING THE SHOTS)
2 On another day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

4 “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. 5 But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.” 6 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.” 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. 8 Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. 9 His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!” 10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

It’s Time to Stop Running - Paul M Williams

It’s Time to Stop Running - Paul M Williams

    Hebrews 12:11

I’ve come to find at length, that there are multitudes of Jonah’s in the land of the living today, occupying the pews and the pulpits of many a church building.  There in bodily presence at least, but as pertaining to their true spiritual condition, they’re on the run from God!  God has His finger on a matter in their lives that they are simply not willing to deal with.  Since God is a Father of love, He delights in the discipline of His children, but as children, we don’t take too kindly to being disciplined.

This sermon is an exhortation and encouragement to believers, to endure in trial under the loving discipline of their heavenly Father.  If we are sons and daughters of the Most-High, then we will not be without His chastening hand of God in our lives.  The Word goes forth, “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth” (Heb. 12:5-6).  Will we be in subjection to that Father of spirits that we might live?

    Able To Handle Affliction

    Able To Handle Affliction
No man knows his moral strength until he comes face to face with a trial. The chain that holds the vessel to the dock is only as strong as the weakest link, and if that weakest link gives way the vessel is loosed from the moorings as surely as if every link had broken. Our human character is only as strong as its weakest point, and if a severe strain is brought to bear upon us, we will break down if our character is not strong. In times of adversity, every virtue and excellence that we possess will be subject to a severe test, and if only one of them is found unequal to the trial, the whole character suffers, and we are in danger of losing our hold on God, and then we will drift from the right course. Throughout scripture we are warned that adverse and unfavorable conditions, calamity, and misfortune will come. Therefore, it is of utmost important that we prepare ourselves in advance before these adversities come.

Lehi will continue to counsel with his children. He will discuss the fall of Adam, and the freedom that we have every day to choose right or wrong. We will discuss what it means to have a Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit, and we will learn how sometimes our Afflictions will be consecrated for our gain, and given as an offering to the Lord.

    A Church in the Cross-hairs

    A Church in the Cross-hairs

"...your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions that your are enduring" 2 Thes. 1:4

The Thessalonian Christians were suffering great persecutions and afflictions. To make matters worse, false teachers and lying prophets had shown up with heresies that 'explained' the suffering. Paul writes this Second Letter to silence the heretics and keep his faithful little flock on track.

Whom God Loves He Chastens - Paul M. Williams

Whom God Loves He Chastens - Paul M. Williams

    Hebrews 12:1-13

Is there any among you that is without the pain and sorrow that accompany trials and afflictions?  What is your response when such trials and afflictions come to press you out of measure?  For many, their immediate response is why me?  If God loves me, why would He allow such affliction to come into my life?  Oh!  Dear Brethren, don’t tarry long in conversation with that old serpent; well our Lord did say of him “he is a liar, and the father of it” (Jn. 8:44).  Nay, in such moments of doubt, we must bring underneath that sinking sand, the sure foundation of God’s Word which cries aloud; it’s because God loves me why he allows trials and afflictions to come into my life!!

In this sermon, three key aspects of God’s chastening are brought out.  Firstly, God chastens His children in retributive disciple in order that they might turn back to Him.  Secondly, God chastens His children in corrective discipline that they might resemble more His image and character.  Thirdly, God chastens His children in preventative discipline lest we should turn aside out of the way.  The overriding message coming through in each case is the same…whom God loves He chastens!!
