Musicians Joy Nkoyo and Abu Mensah (ABS.TRK) discuss the incredible story behind his ambient EP 'Woodlands', made largely in hospital after suffering a stroke aged 15, navigating the journey of making art in a landscape of uncertainty, his sonic influences including Kanye West, MadLib, Mura Masa, Flying Lotus, and his future plans to cross over from sonic to visual works. 

ABS.TRK is a Music Producer, Sound Designer and Visual artist from London, creating ambient and transcendental music. He produces music with efforts to captivate the listener and take them on a journey into the mind, body and soul.

In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by the ultra-talented Dutch DJ / producer, Oceanic, who has taken the world of underground dance music by storm over the past decade or so with his unique brand of rich, tactile experimental techno and ambient. With the bulk of his recent work finding a snug fit and family home on his brother Oberman’s impeccable Nous’klaer Audio imprint, a podcast and peoples favourite, his startling new album, ‘Choral Feeling’, released in January this year saw Oceanic create a beautiful piece of work with a refined focus on connection and the human voice, ingeniously sampling over 30 of his friends singing and weaving them into his compositions.

Over the course of this interview, Job begins by discussing his early years growing up in the Netherlands, formative musical experiences that include British Indie Bands and the German deep house sound of the late 2000’s and how the Dutch scene has evolved over the past decade to become a jewel in the European and global electronic music circuits. He then goes on to share the incredible story and process behind his album ‘Choral Feeling’, before finishing with some record selections and an overview of his upcoming projects and gigs, including a debut Live audio-visual set at this years’ Dekmantel Festival.

In this episode, we are really thrilled to be joined by a truly singular producer and an artist we have been extremely fond of for a while now on the show, following two standout EPs for Nostro Hood System and Alien Jams. Almost exactly a year ago to the day, aircode dropped her stunning debut album 'Grounded', also on Alien Jams. These records all showcased a truly unique and otherworldly approach to what you may broadly call soundsystem music, however, that doesn't quite do it justice.

Over the course of this interview, we begin by discussing Julia's early years and formative experiences, living in Gothenburg and moving to London before diving deep into her influences, creative process and the making of 'Grounded' for the album's one year anniversary!

I’ve been listening to a lot more music lately—and not just in the background while I’m doing something else, but in the foreground as its own activity.

Growing up, my mom always had music playing in the house. She was a huge Motown fan, so I grew up listening to Diana Ross and the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, and way too many others to mention. She and my dad were also big Elvis Presley fans. I think my dad sort of wanted to be Elvis, which probably wasn’t all that uncommon for men in the late ‘60s. My mom and her friend Carol actually used to wait outside Elvis’ house in Brentwood, hoping to catch a glimpse of him coming or going. Although they never saw him there, they did get the chance to go to a party he hosted in 1969 at the International Hotel in Vegas, but that’s another story.
