EP 061 // Hyd, Daniel Avery, Persher & Venus Ex Machina

EP 061 // Hyd, Daniel Avery, Persher & Venus Ex Machina

This week on Awake All Hours, we review ‘CLEARING’ by Hyd (51:45), ‘Ultra Truth’ by Daniel Avery (01:13:11), ‘Man With the Magic Soap’ by Persher (01:32:10) and ‘Doxa’ by Venus Ex Machine (01:35:49). We finish by rounding up some of our favourite new club ready cuts in that humble wee section named What’s In My Bandcamp Basket (01:40:25), this week featuring mind-bending time signatures and exponential rhythms, gully 130 weaponry, trippy acid for the early hours, deep dubstep and much more!

There’s also chat on the relative comfort of dinning room chairs vs sofa's, over-indulging in dairy, Bristol’s thriving soundsystem scene, DJ Mag’s Best of British 2022 nominees and the STRIPE N CO conspiracy…

EDIT: Hyd's pronouns are they/them, however, we mistakenly use she/her in multiple instances during our review of 'CLEARING'. We sincerely apologise for the oversight here.

#4 - Interview with UK Ambient-Folk Artist Ollie Dixon

#4 - Interview with UK Ambient-Folk Artist Ollie Dixon

Carolyn Oakley interviews UK ambient-folk artist Ollie Dixon.  Ollie is an independent artist and songwriter based in Devon and is currently in the process of releasing a brand new EP of songs, including the already released singles 'Islands', 'St Anges' and 'Drifting' when I met with him to talk about his songwriting and music journey so far.

Ollie started out after leaving college early to pursue his career in music.  Initially performing his songs at local open mic nights, he quickly progressed to create and release his first EP in 2019, booking his own gigs and being asked to play at different music festivals.  The 2020 pandemic saw live music opportunities come to a halt and he was forced to pause and reflect on the music he was creating.

Meeting his band members, Lee Crowd and Rach Adamson and teaming up with a producer Rich Stockley, Ollie is now taking his music into a new  direction with a brand new EP, set to be released later in 2022.  The lead off singles from the EP are already being picked up in the new music press, blogs and being supported by BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio.   Ollie is now very much back on the touring circuit, performing at a number of the UK summer festivals and being asked to support a number of artists and bands this coming autumn.

We discuss the challenges faced being an independent artist in the 2020s but also how far you can go when you are creating the music you love and working along side people who help and inspire you to create the best music you can and how important it is to appreciate the ride, friendships and moments that working in music can bring.

If you would like to hear more of Ollie's music  or find out where he will next be performing live - you can find and follow Ollie on his social media channels, Bandcamp, YouTube, Spotify and Instagram etc.  Links are here:

This is the forth episode of the LNPL podcast.  Please listen back to all the episodes and remember to subscribe to the Live Now Play Later Podcast as we will be bringing you more interviews, music news and hopefully soon, live shows from some of the best new music from the UK underground.  We will be speaking directly to the music creators, artists, producers and new industry professionals that are currently standing out on the new music scene in the UK, who we hope you will love as much as we do and hopefully inspire more artists and writers to create and continue their journey.

I am an independent Singer-Songwriter and created LNPL to showcase and support new music and independent artists - everything I do at LNPL is currently self funded, so if you enjoyed this podcast and you would like to support me or the Podcast, so I can continue to bring you more episodes, then you can Support the show here.

Episode No. 25: Ivan Nahem, A Punk Rock Poet and More

Episode No. 25 is with Ivan Nahem! He is a Brooklyn based musician, writer, director, poet, and producer. We sit down to talk about his new album of ambient sound collages Crawling Through Grass (Out May 13th 2022!) and his creative life starting back when a gallery published his first book of poetry. We get into being the frontman of Ritual Tension, Carnival Crash, and now Ex>Tension, CBGB's, playing drums in Swans on the Greed album, yoga, grief, getting through it all, and so much more. You can find more about his work and sign up for his newsletter at www.OnAboutNow.com. This was an honor to be a part of and I look forward to more of these! Go out and listen to Crawling Through Grass as soon as you can!

More information of my upcoming solo art show,
My first solo exhibition in Dallas, Texas will be at the Janette Kennedy Gallery from early May to June 14th. With the opening reception to be held Saturday May 14th from 5:00-9:00PM. There will be cold beverages, live guitar improvisations by my brother Cameron O'Reilly  of Little Universe, myself trying to act normal without being nervous at all, and close to three dozen works of original art all for sale. I hope everyone can make it out to see this collection titled, Transitive Nightfall. And I hope to see as many of you as possible for the for the opening night!

Thank you so much to the Janette Kennedy Gallery for having me and believing in my art enough to host me for six weeks. And thank you to everyone who’s been supportive of my art that have allowed me to get to the point where I can do this. I love you all and I cannot wait to celebrate with you in this space.

    Blurb on the show:

"In their first Dallas showcase Texas artist and native, Preston Light, displays a combination of works on canvas completed from winter 2020 through Spring of 2022. The title, Transitive Nightfall, comes from the classic song Dark Star by the Grateful Dead and is meant to be a glimpse into his creative process and influences. Usually working two to three jobs, the entirety of these pieces are made working into the night and serve as a public diary. The inspiration from each piece comes from the artist’s auditory and emotional synesthesia. Many of the pieces are titled after a song that corresponds to internal visuals that the artist sees and feels.

All pieces are meant to serve as comforting abstractions for the viewer to take solace and find a moment of peace within. There are no intentional forms or figures within them. Only the hope of restful nights and beautiful mornings."

Eclectic Soul 59 w/ Letherette, Tycho, Mac Miller, Elsa Hewitt, Nectvr and more
Celebrating my first two weeks in UK for my new life with a brand new Eclectic Soul ! Hoping there won’t be any problem for me to stay here with that Brexit thing, cause this country is probably the best home for my music. We got three tracks from last Mac Miller posthumous album. I can get emotional when I listen to him, thinking he’s gone so soon. Plus he went away on my birthday. Feeling connected. Tycho plays as the second track, his last release being the first music I was listening on my headphones in UK. I remember walking at night to the underground at the end of the Northern line, under a light rain. I love this dreamy feeling when walking around a new place, not knowing at all what’s after the corner of the street. Michael Kiwanuka’s last eponymous album (he used just his last name) is what I was listening last night while doing grocery. Fantastic release. UK’s Elsa Hewitt returns in the show with her “experimental dream-pop” and the track Mermaid. I’m in love with her sound. I’m looking forward to see her live soon around here, and attend to the CDR event in London where she’ll be the guest in April for an artsist talk + production workshop. Towards the end, you’ll hear a track of mine that I did quickly on January 24, using a free sample pack. I just edited a few things to play it in the show to my better taste. The last two tracks are unreleased bits from my man Nectvr that might very well be signed to my own label Kamînar Records.Get exclusive mixes and support the artists on Mixcloud Select : https://mixcloud.com/costals/select
