#45. Prioritising recovery: regaining my menstrual cycle after competing

#45. Prioritising recovery: regaining my menstrual cycle after competing

As bodybuilders, we frequently test the boundaries on just how far we can push our body before it pushes back.

Spending an extended period of time on a restricted energy intake (calories consumed), whilst continuing to drive a high level of energy output through training, steps and cardio can eventually have a negative impact on overall health.

In the lead up to my second round of shows last year, I lost my menstrual cycle and it's taken me a good 8-10 months (and a lot of angst and worry) to start to restore it.

Although it's not often spoken about, I know I'm not the only athlete who has experienced a loss of cycle, so I hope that sharing my journey will bring more awareness to this and also encourage open discussion between athletes and coaches in prioritising recovery in the post-show period.

Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Becomes Too Extreme

Orthorexia: When Healthy Eating Becomes Too Extreme

Orthorexia Nervosa is when "clean" eating takes over someone's life via spending all day on recipes, research, whee to locate the healthiest of foods, and simply not allowing anything "less than perfect" into their meals. When it becomes too extreme, those that have orthorexia may become malnourished with vitamin deficiency, drop weight, lose their periods via amenorrhea, develop skin rashes, develop adrenal fatigue, suffer hormone imbalances, have difficulty digesting, and withdraw from friends/family in avoiding social get-togethers involving food.

This can affect both genders, and typically affects high-achievers that need to be "perfect."

The DSM-5: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, does not consider Orthorexia to be an official Eating Disorder, unlike that of anorexia or bulimia. The desire to be thin is more these types of disorders, whereas orthorexia nervosa is the desire to be as healthy as possible. If it affects the overall performance of orthorexics, they are much more willing to be more reasonable with recovery.

Episode Interview: ISSA Certified Trainer & Nutritionist, Sarah Merrifield of Merr.Fit shares her own struggle and recovery from Orthorexia and Over-Exercise. She motivates her own clients to have a healthy, fulfilled, sustainable lifestyle and exercise regimen through her "Liberated Fitness Playbook." (Merri.Fit Links Below)
