Episode 32: An American Werewolf in London (1981) | Halloween Horror Month |

Episode 32: An American Werewolf in London (1981) | Halloween Horror Month |
At the height of a full moon, those in East Proctor follow a simple phrase.  “Stick to the roads and beware the moors.” In 1981, two young Americans did just the opposite. Crossing the English countryside, they heard a series of howls and a creature thought to exist only in myth attacked them. For David, surviving that night was not an act of mercy but a curse. For the wolfs bite flowed within him and the city of London was about to bare witness to a creature neither man nor beast. Tonight, to cap off this years Halloween Horror Month, and on a full moon, we are watching and discussing An American Werewolf in London.

    An American Werewolf in London

    An American Werewolf in London

An American Werewolf in London (1981), an absolutely favorite and a classic from John Landis. And, potentially, from what I’ve researched, the ONLY full-frontal male nudity we’ve ever gotten from Landis. This particular scene caused David Naughton to lose his long-time job as Dr. Pepper’s resident singing-and-dancing mascot. Join us, as always, as we dissect, indulge, and ruminate on our last Halloween episode for SPOOKY PENIS MONTH.

Something I regret not mentioning in the episode: how is David a werewolf 2 nights in a row? Isn’t he moon only full for one night, and it changes ever so slightly each night? I googled it and this is what I found: “The moon appears full to the eye for two to three nights. However, astronomers regard the moon as full at a precisely defined instant, when the moon is exactly 180 degrees opposite the sun in ecliptic longitude.” Source: https://earthsky.org/moon-phases/full-moon/

If that is true, then I’ll need a werewolf-ologist to help me figure out what exactly that is all about.

Hey, does anyone know of any full-frontal Thanksgiving films?? Hit me UP.

Episode 47 — An American Werewolf in London

Episode 47 — An American Werewolf in London

Back in 1969 while working as a production assistant on the film “Kelly’s Heroes,” future director and writer John Landis was traveling through Yugoslavia when he was witness to a gypsy funeral where a body was being buried with the utmost precaution to prevent the dead from rising from the grave.

That sparked an idea in Landis’ mind after he realized that he would never be able to actually confront the undead and he wanted to write a script that reflected a young man going through that same ordeal.

He finished the first draft but then tucked it away as he began working on crossing over into his own career as a director where he was behind the camera for massive comedy hits such as “Animal House” and “The Blues Brothers.”

After he had found success as one of the hottest new directors in Hollywood, Landis decided to revisit his script from a decade ago. He secured financing for the film but Landis was told his script was “too frightening to be a comedy and too funny to be a horror film.”

Landis them teamed up with special effects artist and creature creator Rick Baker to ensure that his film had the definitive transformation from man to animal as he brought his lycanthrope to life on the big screen.

In fact, Baker ended up taking home an Academy Award for his work on the movie — the first time the prestigious Oscars had ever given an award for make-up in filmmaking.

Then Is Now Episode 44 - 2021 April Ghouls Drive-In Monster Rama

We've discussed Drive-In Theaters in the past, and while many indoor movie theaters have closed down because of Covid-19, the outdoor Drive-In Theater has not only thrived, but is experiencing a resurgence!

This past weekend my wife and I had the good fortune to be able to attend the 2021 April Ghouls Drive-In Monster Rama at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. It was 80s weekend and they played four horror movies all night on Friday and four more on Saturday. There were vendors and a special guest appearance!

I got some great interviews and you'll hear those in this episode, as well as trailers for the films, and give you a little discussion about them. And there were some other fun things that we got to check out and some things that we didn't have time for, that I'll tell you all about!! This episode also ties in with Then Is Now Blog #51, so check it out!

    An American Werewolf In London

    An American Werewolf In London

The Howling vs. An American Werewolf In London?

The Howling vs. An American Werewolf In London?

Werewolves had a moment in 1981. Excluding Wolfen, whose killer canines technically don’t fit the species description, Hollywood produced not one but two odes to the lycanthrope that year: John Landis’ Oscar-winning An American Werewolf In London and Joe Dante’s franchise-launching The Howling. But which of these shaggy horror comedies was best in show? We polled Twitter earlier this week. Now, on our final Halloween-season episode of Film Club, critics A.A. Dowd and Katie Rife are picking different dogs in this fight. Welcome to The Premise Dome, full moon edition!

    145. An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Sometimes, the Squirms take their time to get to classics. Take An American Werewolf in London for example. A classic tale of boys meet wolf, wolf hurts boys, boy meets girl, boy turns into wolf, girl survives a barrage of police gunfire that mows down wolf. Despite it being such a well-worn story path, John Landis tells it expertly and the Squirms go off the moors talking about it.
