    Read the transcript

In this podcast, Research Scientist Timothy Rich, PhD, discusses a new study, the first to show the need to expand the application of prism adaptation treatment for spatial neglect. Dr. Rich was part of a team that discovered prism adaptation therapy was as beneficial for treating right-sided spatial neglect as left-sided spatial neglect in a cohort of individuals with stroke and traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries. The findings were published in June 2023 in a peer-reviewed article, “Prism Adaptation Treatment for Right-Sided and Left-Sided Spatial Neglect: A Retrospective Case-Matched Study,” in the journal Archives of Rehabilitation Research and Clinical Translation.

Kim Koogle Discusses A Portion Of Her Journey Of Coercive Control, Her Child's Psychological Abuse And Legal Abuse In The System

Slam the Gavel welcomes my good friend Kim Koogle to the podcast. Kim talked about her journey through being in a Cult, "The Way International," when she was 22 years old. Kim talked about Robert J. Lifton's books, one of which was Cults In Our Midst: The Hidden Menace in our Everyday Lives. Coercive Control and Mind Control, and how this played a big part when she was came out of the cult that would prepare her for what would come next in her life.
Kim had put herself through college and had a career prior to having children and had been a contractor in nuclear power plants for Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. Then she spent twenty years raising her children. However, her spouse had filed for divorce.
Explaining that after her children were taken away from her by her ex in court and the legal abuse she suffered, for example going from living in a one-million dollar house to now an Airstream Trailer, to when her daughter had a serious accident and was then under the control of her father, Kim could see the coercive control through, "loaded language," which was used in Lifton's book. COERCIVE CONTROL through DOMESTIC VIOLENCE by PROXY. Kim shared the heartbreaking destruction of child psychological abuse and how it has affected her children and her life, in as far as PTSD and Aphasia, and how far she has come.

Researching novel approaches for treating neuropathic pain and chronic fatigue - Ep39

    Fast Takes - Ep39

    Read the transcript.

Historically, it was believed that the brain stopped growing after childhood. We now know the contrary to be true. Neuroscience has confirmed that our brains change throughout our lives, from birth to death. The brain’s ability to rewire its circuitry and make adaptive changes, known as neuroplasticity, is why recovery after injury is possible.

But much about neuroplasticity is not well understood. Our researchers are using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and real-time neurofeedback capabilities to conduct several novel pilot studies. Their goal is to correlate changes in the brain to changes in behavior and function.

    Learning About Aphasia

    Learning About Aphasia

Aphasia is an acquired condition that affects a person's ability to speak, write and understand language. The condition has been in the news ever since it was cited as the reason for Bruce Willis' recent retirement from acting.

What do we know about aphasia; its causes, symptoms and what can be done to help those who are affected by it?

A recent episode of Baptist Health's Resource Live program, hosted by Jonathan Fialkow, M.D., delved into this complex and debilitating condition.

    Guests:

    • Felipe De Los Rios La Rosa, M.D., director of the stroke program at Baptist Health's Miami Neuroscience Institute
    • Denise Vargas, speech pathologist at Baptist Health.

    WHAT IS HAPPENING

Each episode demonstrates  that I sorely need an interviewer.  I'm a smart-ass researcher with chronic illness who has memory problems, thinking problems, and progressive trouble speaking.  PERFECT recipe for an award winning audio experience!  I am researching my own past and memoir project through interviews and 12+ years of voice memos I left to myself.  The practice speaking helps me with re-hab.  For more explanation please check out the introductory episode of Monstrorum Historia: #00.

    WHAT JUST HAPPENED

There's much more work to interrogating my voice memo cache than what is reflected in this podcast
. But hey: logging and transcribing, and backing up, and structurally analyzing and psychoanalyzing hours and years of recordings is not the type of audio experience I imagine listeners want.

They want Future Wendy making fun of Past Wendy!

    • I decide to share part of my work of sifting through hundreds of voice memos.
    • I randomly pick a memo called "Couch Park" named by GPS.
    • It's only about 3 minutes tops, and I interject to give context and make fun of myself.
    • I attempt to explain why I'm stunned, and how doing this feels very terrible, yet I emerge curious.
    • I thank my supportive Patrons who engage with my larger project of a graphic memoir.

I curse a bit; cannot be helped. Retreat unscathed if this is unacceptable.  Discussed: aphasia, memory loss, voice memos... I can't remember what else.
