    Under the Sea-quels

    Under the Sea-quels

In this Showdown episode, Conor and Caroline are exploring that shore up above and the sea below as they deep dive into what lies beyond the events of 1989's The Little Mermaid. After a decade of waiting, Disney finally released a direct-to-video sequel, The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea but how does it compare to Liz Braswell's "what if?" novel, Part of Your World: A Twisted Tale? Will either of these sequels flip their fins deep enough into Ariel's world or will they get caught in the shallows? Come on you poor unfortunate souls, hit play already!

The Merwife of Shetland (Bonus Minisode #7)

The Merwife of Shetland (Bonus Minisode #7)

In the Stories from the Hearth minisode series - normally exclusive to Patreon - Calum reads a classic story from the public domain; be it fable, fairy-tale, or moral; European, or International. Sometimes they perform them as they were first told, sometimes they rewrite them in their own style, and sometimes they perform bits and pieces from their own body of work. In minisode seven, they read their very own, original version of 'The Merwife of Shetland', an ancient folktale regarding the seal-people (or selkies) of the seas surrounding Scotland.

Stories from the Hearth minisodes are exclusive to Patreon, where the reading of a new bonus story will be released monthly. What Does It Mean to Be Represented?

What Does It Mean to Be Represented?

What is it that makes you see yourself in a fictional character? Or, what is it about a fictional character that makes you feel represented by them? I take issue with the popular understanding of representation in media in an episode that might get me in trouble if, you know, anyone were listening.

    The Little Mermaid

    The Little Mermaid

This week, we have a classic fairy tale from master of the genre Hans Christian Andersen, 'The Little Mermaid'.  This is, of course, a very different story to the famous Disney film of the same name. Enchanting, beguiling, tragic, with hints of the morality tale and an absence of singing crabs, it is indeed a fairy tale, but perhaps more of a literary work than that simple title suggests.

05 The Little Mermaid and Old Testament Tragedy

05 The Little Mermaid and Old Testament Tragedy

How well do you know the original story of the Little Mermaid? Hans Christian Anderson's tale is quite different from the Disney retelling, and has some pretty developed Christian themes. Be moved, delighted and challenged this episode, and discover why you have the soul of a mermaid!

I have found a 1975 animation of The Little Mermaid which is much closed to the original Hans Christian Anderson tale. It's quite well done! You can access it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djA3BHG6utc

11: Fairy Funny - What Was Hans Drinking?

In a change of pace, Ariel dishes with her Prince Charming, Ian, comedically recalling the tales from our first two episodes with a more... loosy-goosy, improvisational style.

Meanwhile, Scott the editor wonders whatever he did to deserve having to edit audio levels on session where two speakers share one mic. (Ah, let's face it: Scott almost certainly deserves that karma for one reason or another)

Ariel apologizes and will try to get the mic properly adjusted for next time.
