Strange News: Armenia Under Attack, A Missing Jet and Murders in LA

Azerbaijan wages war against Armenia -- and from the US to Europe, from Russia to Iran, it seems no one will intervene to protect civilians. The US loses and later recovers an out-of-control fighter jet. In Los Angeles, two suspicious deaths cause locals to wonder whether there is an active serial murderer on the loose. 116. Remembrance and Another Great Movie Idea

Welcome to episode 116, Kaleigh is out of town and is still writing this so she's gonna keep it short. Kat kicks this one off with a look at the tragedy of the Armenian Genocide, Kaleigh then attempts to lighten the mood with bio on two of the Moulin Rouge's headliners, La Goulue and Jane Avril.

Just a heads up, we cover some pretty heavy hitting stuff this episode, it might not be for all audiences.

Bearing Witness: Armenian Genocide Museum Institute Foundation

Bearing Witness: Armenian Genocide Museum Institute Foundation

For the last hundred years, politicians, civilians, and academics have attempted to deny the Armenian Genocide. Currently, efforts exist to annihilate both a period of history and its people. In this episode, we are joined by Regina Galustyan of the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute Foundation who discusses her research about the efforts of the perpetrator at denial and her hopes for the future of her country.

This episode is brought to you by Dr. Stephanie Arel and produced by Shrine13.

    Naré Mkrtchyan

    Naré Mkrtchyan

In this special two-part episode, we will hear stories from documentarians from two different periods of history who shed light on the repercussions of generations-long denial and silence. The first part of the episode is a short narrative piece about the life and legacy of Armin Wegner, a German humanitarian who was witness to the genocide of the Armenians during the First World War and then stood up to Hitler about the persecution of the Jews in 1933.  That piece is narrated by Stephen Smith (from episode 3). The second part of the episode is a conversation with Armenian filmmaker Naré Mkrtchyan whose grandparents survived the Armenian Genocide. She sits down with host Rachael Cerrotti to discuss how coming from a family history that is narrated by denial and debate has impacted her identity and the stories she has chosen to explore in her work. Her film, The Other Side of Home, was the first film about the Armenian Genocide to have been shortlisted for an Oscar.

    A genocide recognized

    A genocide recognized
For more than a century the U.S. has not formally recognized the killing of more than a million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during WWI as genocide. Over the weekend, that changed. POLITICO’s Charlie Mahtesian explains what it means for Armenian Americans. Plus, the U.S. pledges aid to India amid a Covid surge. And a group of Senators Biden to push for Medicare expansion. Charlie Mahtesian is the senior politics editor for POLITICO. Jeremy Siegel is a host for POLITICO Dispatch. Irene Noguchi is the executive producer of POLITICO audio. The Resistance Network: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarianism in Ottoman Syria

The Resistance Network: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarianism in Ottoman Syria

The Resistance Network is the history of an underground network of humanitarians, missionaries, and diplomats in Ottoman Syria who helped save the lives of thousands during the Armenian Genocide. The book challenges depictions of Armenians as passive victims of violence and subjects of humanitarianism, demonstrating the key role they played in organizing a humanitarian resistance against the destruction of their people. Piecing together hundreds of accounts, official documents, and missionary records, Mouradian presents a social history of genocide and resistance in wartime Aleppo and a network of transit and concentration camps stretching from Bab to Ras ul-Ain and Der Zor. He ultimately argues that, despite the violent and systematic mechanisms of control and destruction in the cities, concentration camps, and massacre sites in this region, the genocide of the Armenians did not progress unhindered—unarmed resistance proved an important factor in saving countless lives.

Khatchig Mouradian is a lecturer in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African studies at Columbia University, and the editor of the peer-reviewed journal The Armenian Review. In 2020, Dr. Mouradian was awarded a Humanities War & Peace Initiative Grant from Columbia University.
