Serj Tankian's System Of A Down Memoir Is Coming + MORE

Serj Tankian's System Of A Down Memoir Is Coming + MORE

Welcome to another episode of Hard N Heavy Headlines, hosted by the inimitable Emmy Mack of RedHook. In this jam-packed episode, we delve deep into the world of progressive rock, alternative rock, and metal.

First on our list, we bring the most anticipated news for Dream Theatre devotees! The prodigious prog drummer, Mike Portnoy, is marking his grand return to the band after 13 long years. Portnoy originally exited the stage in 2010 after a 25-year-long commitment, citing burnout and better opportunities with other bands. Now he's back, and he's more elated than ever! Don't miss our detailed discussion about what this means for Dream Theatre and the world of progressive rock.

Switching gears, we discuss the surprising news about The Smashing Pumpkins. Jeff Schroeder, the band's guitarist, has decided to hang up his six-string after 15 years. The news has left fans curious about the band's future and Schroeder's next steps. Get exclusive insights into his incredible journey and what he's planning for his new path.

Last but not least, we cover System of a Down's frontman Serj Tankian, who is gearing up to launch his debut memoir. Titled "Down With The System," the book is slated to hit the shelves on May 14 next year, and it's already making waves. Find out why you should pre-order this anticipated read now!

Ep. 188: 20-Teens Rock n' Punk n' Metal Time Capsule

Ep. 188: 20-Teens Rock n' Punk n' Metal Time Capsule

In this week’s episode, we unearthed our Gen 2 iPad and traveled back to the decade that many rock n’ rollers call the “dark decade”. That’s right! We are listening to obscure tracks from the previous decade of the 20-Teens; when Gaga wore a meat dress, we were introduced to Instagram, Indie Rock became a genre, we all got challenged with ice buckets, the host of The Apprentice got elected, and some really great rock n’ punk n’ metal!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode we talk about the lost and forgotten gems of the 10s. A decade where music became a true commodity as streaming surpassed all physical and digital media as the way we consume our tunes.

    Songs this week include:

    1. The Bronx - “Style Over Everything” from The Bronx (IV) (2013)
    2. Fair To Midland - “Whiskey & Ritalin” from Arrows & Anchors (2011)
    3. Rozwell Kid - “Baby’s First Sideburns” from Good Graphics EP (2015)
    4. The Human Project - “Anti-Pathetic” from Origins (2013)
    5. Graveyard - “Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)” from Hisingen Blues (2011)
    6. The Carburetors - “Lords Of Thunder” from Laughing In The Face Of Death (2015)
    7. Psychopunch - “Long Time Coming” from The Last Goodbye (2010)
    8. X Japan - “Born To Be Free” from Born To Be Free – Single (2015)

Ep 34 | Durand Jones | Wait Til I Get Over

Ep 34 | Durand Jones | Wait Til I Get Over

In Part 1 we get to grips with the enchanting 'Wait Til I Get Over' by Durand Jones. We talk all things soul and share our opinions. In Part 2 we play a one-off version of Spin It or Bin It that we're calling 'Love/Hate'. We each pick a track that we love but we think the others will hate.

Part 1 | Album of the Month | Durand Jones | Wait Til I Get Over

It's David's choice this month and he's chosen an album by and artist that none of us have any history with or knowledge of. The album is very much a soul album in every way that you could possibly define that word.  If you want it to be, it's a very easy to listen to soul album that fits nicely into the sun we've been enjoying. But it's also a deeply personal and emotionally moving album if you go a little deeper.

    • Go listen to the album - Here
    • Go watch some videos - Here
    • Go buy some of their stuff - Here

    Some links that we reference and recommend;

    • 'Bedroom Beethovens' ... another interview - Click Here
    • Sound and Vision interview that we reference - Click Here

Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | Love/Hate

So. This is a new one. We all pick a track that we love and will defend to the hilt ... but that we think the other 3 of us will hate. It sounds easy, but it's actually not.

Here's a handy playlist of the 4 chosen Love/Hate tracks

In order to chose our tracks we create a long list, then a short list of 4 tracks each. Each of our 4x track short lists are collated here ... have a listen ... but approach with caution, this makes no sense whatsoever!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E50

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E50

S5E50 aired on 15 December 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  December is usually quiet on the station but for TSORR it is always very special, this particular show celebrated the official start of the December holidays.  Next week TSORR turns 5 and the week after that Episode 52 the season closer takes you through all the rock and metal highlights of 2022.  But more of that later.  This episode kicked off with White Lion and a track off the Fight To Survive called ‘In the City’.  From there we went to the USA and a band called Motor Sister, and Scotland for a bit of Nazareth and ‘May The Sunshine’, a rock classic if ever there was one.  Electric 6 and System of a Down took us to the weirder side of rock with ‘I Wish This Song Was Louder’ and BOOM! Respectively.

From there we checked out the ladies, Laura Cox out of France is new to me, what an awesome guitarist, we listened to Freaking Out Loud off her Burning Bright album.  Big thanks to Norman for that one, I had totally missed Laura.  We also checked out another track off the new Halestorm album, Back From The Dead.  Buckcherry, no strangers to TSORR hit us with Fallout and Sixx A.M. with ‘Stars’.  Metallica got us back into the heavy side of things and we stayed there with ‘Spreading the Disease’ from Queensryche and some Accepts and some Candlemass.  It all went down very well.

South Africa is blessed with two of the greatest blues guitarists around, Dan Patlansky who has just been awarded the second-best album of 2022 by Blues Rock Magazine for his Shelter of Bones, (this is a huge achievement guys,  Dan beat out blues giants Walter Trout, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Edgar Winter)  and Richard Pryor in his band Pebbleman.  We took a listen to 'Devil’s Dopamine' and a track called ‘Edge of Nails’ from Richard’s Pebbleman project.  Pink Floyd’s ‘Young Lust’ gave another classic track and then we hit the punky part of the show with The Boomtown Rats, The Clash, and a tribute to Jet Black, the drummer from The Stranglers, RIP Jet, thanks for the music.  I am sure that Jet and Dave Greenfield are having a pint right this very moment.

Taking us into the home stretch we hit the rock with Motörhead’s classic ‘Stay Clean’, The Dead Daisies, and some serious thrash from Death Angel and a track called ‘Mistress of Pain’.  Then it was back to South Africa and three in a row from Cutting Jade, Arapaho, and Francois Van Coke.  We closed out with Alter Bridge and a track that sums it all up tonight titled 'Holiday'.  All the best to you all and to everyone who went on leave this week, enjoy it, Memento Mori!

Artists featured:  White Lion, Motor Sister, Nazareth, Rival Sons, Walking Papers, Electric Six, System of a Down, Texas Hippie Coalition, Joe Lynn Turner, Laura Cox, Halestorm, Buckcherry, Sixx A.M. Little Caesar, Little Steven, Metallica, Queensrÿche, Accept, Candlemass, Dan Patlansky, Pebbleman, Pink Floyd, Audioslave, The Boomtown rats, The Clash, The Stranglers, My Chemical Romance, The Dead Daisies, Kid Rock, Death Angel, Cutting Jade, Arapaho, Francois Van Coke, Mastodon, Disturbed, Ayron Jones, The Distillers, Alter Bridge

Episode 28: Linkin Park vs System Of A Down

Episode 28: Linkin Park vs System Of A Down

Not just timeless Nu Metal. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory and System Of A Down - Toxicity could be considered the gateway albums to millions of young metalheads today. Putting them against each other one-on-one makes for an interesting battle indeed. Which record did Imran & Jason gravitate towards?

Plus, Imran requested that he and Jason invite the final member of his band, Flood, not yet appeared on the show, his bass player Juliette, someone who has grown up with Linkin Park and System Of A Down since childhood, to come on and have her say and possibly sway the debate.

Episode 25: Tool vs System Of A Down w/Imran's Band Flood

In a podcast capitalising on a ship that sailed two years ago, Jason and Imran break down the Tool and System Of A Down albums that following their release, started a 13 year streak of no new music, 10,000 Days and Hypnotize.
Imran, being a super fan of both bands, was so excited about this battle and 'tis being the holiday season, he invited his bandmate, Nick, to take part in the discussion.
Will the power of the third eye pull Tool over the line? Or does the manic chaos of Hypnotize earn System Of A Down the winners perk?

Imran and Nick are currently working on material for their band FLOOD.

    #56 – Camp Suey!

    #56 – Camp Suey!

Hell Bent For Metal casts a queer eye back over the varied and plentiful looks of Daron Malakian, the inspired guitarist of System Of A Down. In the return of the #YesHomo feature, Tom and Matt explain why some of these appearances erroneously set off the gaydar of both hosts.

This week's Camp Classic is 'Leave Me Here' by Cult Of Luna, from the Swedish post-metallers' 2004 album Salvation. And while there's one very superficial reason CoL speak to the hosts' queer sides, there's a rather deeper reason that's the focus.

Plus this week sees two releases going into the Hate Crew Gaybar jukebox, with the Carcass' Torn Arteries and Rhapsody Of Fire's Glory For Salvation being added.
