The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E46

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E46

Episode 46 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 November 2021.  It was a show that I used as therapy to move through a really bad day at work.  You know those days where everything just goes wrong?  Yeah, one of those.  There was a massive thunderstorm in JHB with roads underwater, accidents, cars on the side of the road, and load shedding on top of all of this.  It was a great opportunity to demonstrate the therapeutic power of rock.  We kicked off with ACDC and 'If You Want Blood (You Got It)', then went over to Germany for 'Wild, Wild Nights,' another track off the brand new Running Wild album called Blood on Blood.  A bit of ZZ Top followed and then some Triumph which I thought was a highlight of the show. It is easy to give Rush all the credit for great Canadian music and forget about Rik Emmett and the lads.  This track ' Fight The Good Fight' shows admirably how good Triumph and the Allied Forces album was.

We had plenty of heavy hitters; Rammstein, System of a Down, Five Finger Death Punch, and then some Boston and Foreigner to highlight why some people are stuck in the '70s.  Pearl Jam and Soundgarden took care of the grunge and Ramones and Blink 182 gave us our weekly dose of punk.  Then a strange thing happened and I played 'Mirror in the Bathroom' by The Beat which was a song I didn't like when it came out in 1980.  This is probably because it was the opposite of British Steel, Back In Black, Blizzard of Oz, Ace of Spades, Heaven and Hell, and Iron Maiden which were shaping my life at the time.  But it sounded good, I have mellowed.

From there we tipped the hat again to Tokyo and Sao Paulo who are leading the listenership rankings for TSORR podcasts.  Sepultura's 'Refuse / Resist' was awesome and I enjoyed Japan's Lovebites with a track called 'The Wrath of the Hammer'.  From there it was the downhill run, there was a 5-minute break in the transmission of the live show as the power came back and the wifi had to restart.  The joys of an ANC run South Africa are evident.  We took a listen to the guitar work of Anton Lamour on Valiant Swarts' track 'Droomrivier', this was a small tribute to Theuns Jordaan who passed away this week and was loved and respected by many. The new Mastodon is awesome, we listened to 'The Beast', the show ended in grand style with 'Strachan' by The Hitchers and then some input from the Gallagher brothers with both Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds and then Oasis.  As usual, I totally ran out of time.

Artists featured:  ACDC, Running Wild, Backyard Babies, Black Stone Cherry, Triumph, ZZ Top, Black Country Communion, The Dead Daisies, System of A Down, Five Finger Death Punch, Boston, Foreigner, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Equator, Children of Bodom, Mother Love Bone, Jimmy Barnes, Rammstein, Texas Hippie Coalition, Blink 182, Ramones, The Beat, Sepultura, Lovebites, Valiant Swart, Jack Hammer, Metallica, Volbeat, Samantha Fish, Judas Priest, Tom Petty, Mastodon, The Hitchers, Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds, Oasis, Nirvana

Matty and Noah resume their Online Friendship (TM) to raise the stakes to MAGNUM LEVEL  in the campaign for podcast reviews, as well as discuss BB3R's first  coolship wake up brew, Matty Gump's long distance running progress, and a Theo Von crowd fit for a skit on I Think You Should Leave (literally and figuratively). The guys also crack open the mailbag to get into centrifuges, gluten-free beer, the need for decoction, floating bungs, and the separation of brett (church) and sacc (state) in the cellar. The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E44

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E44

Episode 44 of Season 4 aired on 4 Nov 2021 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Kicking off with Van Halen and running through a series of rockers from the likes of Quiet Riot, Chrome Division and Jorn got the show off to a lively start.  We had a bit of prog for a change, Porcupine Tree and Mastodon doing the honours.  I have always seen Mastodon as a metal band despite the prog label attached to them.  They have definitely moved in that direction in the last 10 or so years.

We celebrated 20 years since Nirvana's Nevermind and played 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and more grungy stuff from L7, then into a very cool cover of 'Boys of Summer' by The Ataris.  For some reason, we had fewer of the classic bands like Judas Priest, Aerosmith & W.A.S.P than normal.  I think it's probably the first time ACDC didn't get a run.  We also made up for the lack of SA music last week and checked out Fokofpolisiekar & Arapaho.  I needed to wrap up the elections theme that I started last week and The Uninvited and The Burning, out of Cape Town and Benoni respectively stepped up for the job.  The final word on elections was given to Deangersmith from his album Lead Me To Your Taker (Disable the Corrupt) and a track called ' The Bigger They Are The Harder They Fall'.

P.S. The Hollywood Vampires track featured Jeff Beck, I couldn't find it during the show.
P.P.S after hearing this again I found a bit at around 2:08 where I obviously didn't put the microphone on.  It's after AMH before Arapaho and I had been asked to mention to people that all those letting off firecrackers for Guy Fawkes / Divali are terrorizing a lot of very loved pets.  Please forgive the gap and don't adjust your set.  It's about 60 sec but feels like forever from my perspective :-(

Artists featured:  Van Halen, Wolf, Quiet Riot, Jorn, Chrome Division, Hollywood Vampires, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, W.A.S.P., Avenged Sevenfold, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, Porcupine Tree, Mastodon, Nirvana, L7, The Ataris, The Clash, We Are Harlot, Trivium, Judas Priest, Manowar, Danko Jones, Buckcherry, Demon, Faith No More, Aerosmith, AMH, Arapaho, Fokofpolisiekar, Hinder, Dave Hause, Neil Young, The Uninvited, The Burning, Audioslave, Clutch, Massive Wagons, Volbeat, Deangersmith

#66: The Endocannabinoid System (Elise Keller)

#66: The Endocannabinoid System (Elise Keller)

As always, the Dr. Junkie Show does NOT provide medical advice. On this episode, Elise Keller joins me to discuss the endocannabinoid system. What is it? How does it work? Why is it so un-studied? Plus what on Earth is Cannabis Coaching

Just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Elise gave a Ted Talk sharing her journey to and through cannabis: "The Surprising Connection between Cannabis and Mind-Body Health". In addition to it, we also discuss methods of consumption (oral, sublingual, smoking), stigma and how to combat it, holism and the mind-body connection, and the endocannabinoid system as the body's "Master Regulator." We also list ways of increasing your endocannabinoids naturally through foods, behaviors and types of exercise, and how to avoid toxins which decrease natural endocannabinoid levels.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E23

To say that being in South Africa right now is difficult is an understatement.  The continuous load shedding is playing havoc (hammock :-)) with the broadcasts, you never know when you are going to get cut off or if the cell towers are going to work.  Episode 23 of Season 4 went out on 10 June at 7 pm, load shedding kicked in one minute after the show ended, score one for Rock and Roll.

We started with W.A.S.P.  and ' The Invisible Boy' off their masterpiece, The Crimson Idol. Next, it was the turn of Great White off their '91 album hooked and I highlighted just what a great year 1991 was for new releases.  The show was light on both Australian and South African artists, with only Cold Chisel, ACDC, and Fokofpolisiekar getting a slot this week, I will put in some extra SA next week.  Cold Chisel's 'Yakuza Girls' off The last Wave of Summer went down very well.  We checked out Die Toten Hosen with 'Liebeslied' which just made it impossible no to follow up with The Damned and 'Love Song'.

Once again The Doors sounded amazing and clearly, I need to play a bit more of them.  Amazing to think Jim Morrison only made it to 27, so young, imagine what he would be putting out these days.  Other than that Halford was great and so was Kid Rock, in fact, everything was good, just as it should be.  Check it out, i am sure you will find something in here.

Artists featured: W.A.S.P., Great White, Soil, Cold Chisel, ACDC, Jorn, Overkill, David Lee Roth, Chickenfoot, Rammstein, Filter, Billy Idol, The Cult, Ivan Ivankovic, The Doors, Pearl Jam, System of a Down, Kiss, Guns 'n' Roses, Accept, The Stranglers, Die Toten Hosen, The Damned, Halford, Dio, Kid Rock, John Mellencamp, Red Dragon Cartel, Mammoth WVH, My Chemical Romance, Staind, Testament, The Horrible Crowes, Halestorm, Foo Fighters, Fokofpolisiekar.

    230 - Armenian Genocide

    230 - Armenian Genocide

This might be the first episode to get me death threats. The Turkish government does NOT like being accused of genocide, and neither do many of its citizens. But during WW1, genocide is exactly what the Young Turks orchestrated. Roughly 1.5 million Armenians were killed. And between 1900 - 1923, up to 4.3 million Armenian, Greek, Assyrian, and other smaller ethnic groups of Christian were massacred by the Ottoman Empire and their successors committed to the racist and xenophobic ideology of Pan-Turkism. Today's story is a crazy one. The craziest part about it is that it is not more well known. And it is not well known primarily because of Turkey's consistent and constant denial that it ever happened. It is literally illegal in Turkey to accuse the Turkish government of having committed genocide. They have cut off relations with other nations for accusing them of genocide. It's a topic that needs to be talked about more and I hope you are as fascinated by today's information as I am.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E3

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E3

The thoroughly enjoyable Episode 3 of season 4 went out live at 7 pm on the 21st of January 2021.  It was great right from the start, there were plenty of people tuned in and from Boston’s opening track ‘Don’t Look Back’ all the way through to Parkway Drive it was a cracker.  A listener highlighted the fact that at 21h21 we would be 21 hours, 21 minutes, 21 seconds of the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.  That created some pressure to find a suitable song to play at the time.  Even more so because before I found this out I had already played Green Day’s 21 Guns which would have been good.

We ran through a lot of 80’s metal;  Ratt, Mr Big, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Tygers of Pan Tang, Slaughter, and Keel and we checked out 70s giants The Sweet and the inimitable Ted Nugent.  The punk section was covered by the Sex Pistols and The Stranglers and Aussies were represented by Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, and The Lazys.  Special mention here for Cold Chisel, I played Bal-A-Versailles and the feedback was instant, “what a great track”!  Usually, I will get a comment about a song but literally, immediately, 4 comments came in about it.  Another crowd-pleaser was SA’s own The Black Cat Bones with ‘Don’t Wake the Scarecrow', again, to all-round approval, it’s a song that raises goosebumps every time.

Other than that we checked out the remarkable rebranding and rebuilding of the career of Ron Keel and we sorted out the 21 hours, minutes, and seconds thing by being able to say that at the exact time we were listening to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show and being blasted by a suitable bit of metal which was fitting in many ways.

Artists featured:  Boston, ACDC, Godsmack, Ratt, Mr Big, The Sweet, Hinder, Paragon, Green Day, The Rolling Stones, System of a Down, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Halestorm, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, The Lazys, Ted Nugent, Static-X, Seether, Black Star Riders, Mustasch, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Cougar, Metallica, Tygers on Pan Tang, Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Machine Head, Slaughter, Aking, The Diamond Dogs, The Black Cat Bones, Keel, Ron Keel Band, Parkway Drive

Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for the support throughout 2020.  There is no question that it's been tough :-).  The X-mas eve edition of TSORR went on air at 7 pm on 24 Dec 2020.  It wasn't particularly Christmasy as I generally am not overly Christmasy myself and especially when it comes to music.  I wasn't a total grinch though and did play 'Christmas in Hell' by Sixx A.M.

The show kicked off with some Whiskey Myers and then hit stuff like Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, and Animal Drive.  My daughter was in the house and she is a big part of why TSORR exists as both a book and a Radio Show so I played a couple of tracks and explained how all of this came about.  Kiss - Destroyer, John Paul Young's Yesterday's Hero, and The Boomtown Rats' masterpiece the Fine Art of Surfacing, all have a special bearing on the show as do Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and The Stranglers.

There was a short tribute to Leslie West, a giant of a man both physically and as a guitarist.  He sadly passed away last night (23 Dec) and so, it was fitting that we played 'Legend' off his Unusual Suspects album.  Leslie's tone and feel were indeed extraordinary and he will be missed.  That's Leslie in this episode's thumbnail for those who may not be familiar with the man (perish the thought).

Highlights for me included Tom Petty with 'Have Love Will Travel', Machine Head with Bastards, Tom Waits with Mr. Siegal, and Rammstein with Deutschland.

Artists featured:  Whiskey Myers, Slash, Quiet Riot, The Lazys, Animal Drive!, ACDC, Ozzy Osbourne, Arapaho, POD, Rammstein, System of a Down, Australian Crawl, Kiss, John Paul Young, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, The Clash, Seether, Clutch, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Leslie West, the Killers, The Longshot, Cold Chisel, the Mayfield Four, Machine Head, Megadeth, Rival Sons, Airbourne, Prime Circle, Bad Company, Tom Waits, Iced Earth, Halestorm, Tesla & Slade.
