S2:E22 Craig Robins I In Miami, All Roads Lead To Craig

S2:E22 Craig Robins I In Miami, All Roads Lead To Craig

"In Miami, all roads lead to Craig."  Virgil Abloh, fashion designer, artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear

No one of our generation has played a more influential role in defining, redefining and shaping the culture in Miami than Craig Robins. Craig is a visionary in the truest sense of the word, nothing short of brilliant. However, it was his unpretentious personal warmth and willingness to engage with this unknown restaurateur in the 80s that established our connection, one that has endured through his astronomical rise over the past four decades.

As the CEO and President of Dacra, the real estate development company he founded in 1987, Robins focuses on developing creative communities that integrate art, design and architecture to accelerate asset value creation and enrich urban life. Dacra has spearheaded some of the most successful and transformative commercial, residential and mixed-use projects in Miami’s history, including South Beach, the Lincoln Road area, Allison Island and the Miami Design District, an 18-square block neighborhood dedicated to fashion, design and art that incorporates the work of emerging and established architects, public art, Michelin restaurants and stores by the world’s most significant luxury brands.

In 2005, the neighborhood’s rapid renewal inspired the creation of Design Miami/ (Jun) in Basel, Switzerland and subsequently Design Miami/ Basel (Dec) in Miami, design fairs that have evolved into the world’s premier global forum for collectible design. Robins is the Chairman of the show, which he owns in partnership with MCH Swiss Exhibition, the producers of Art Basel

Join me, your host Brad Johnson , and Craig as we discuss his family life growing up, how a year studying abroad in Spain broadened Craig's view of urban design and inspired his citizen-of-the-world perspective. We learn about the three mentors in his career, the importance of historical buildings in preserving and reflecting culture, and how Craig's love of art, design, architecture and sense of community melded into his business philosophy and storied journey.

    Head in the Clouds

    Head in the Clouds

Every fast-food chain wants their shot at the clown, and that makes Pusha T the court jester in everyone's court. The podcast opens up with EstoBro grilling Many Hatake and special guest Nick Lucius over when was the last time they ordered a Filet-O-Fish sandwich (5:30). The conversation transitions into the latest 'beef' that Pusha T is serving up against McDonald's; and he's doing it with the support of Arby's advertising. EstoBro introduces Mandy Hatake and Nick Lucius (12:45) in the formal introduction for the listening audience. Nick Lucius is a local artist from Tampa who has been styling and profiling all over the state of Florida for a few good years now. Without TV on the episode, there is no reason to hold a conversation about sports, however, EstoBro wants to discuss how sports jerseys have been the latest fashion trend for bands and artists are using to express their art forms thoroughly (22:00). The conversation focuses for the collective locks their attention on art, especially to celebrate the work of Nick Lucius and what inspires him to be an absolute creative (33:00). Nick also celebrates his major win displaying his work at Art Basel in Miami and how the rest of the podcast love the major influence of the area has on artists. Nick Lucius also takes the time to explain how artists are influencing NFTs (49:05) and the valued importance on how it will preserve art in the future. The show turns into several debates before the 'Who has the munchies?' segment (55:55) where EstoBro is tired about artists painting impression fruit bowls and Nick says that is bar Zukku San in Wesley Chapel is totally Flavortown (68:35).

Check out all of Nick Lucius' work on his Instagram to see his amazing glow up and where all his artistic adventures take him.

Keeping Up With The Art Market

Keeping Up With The Art Market

The Art Market has been going through a period of enormous appreciation and transformation.  To understand what is fueling both, I sit down with Hilde Lynn Helphenstein & Matthew Capasso.  You may know Hilde as @jerrygogosian where she satirizes and influences the art market amongst her many other endevors.  She is an artist and curator as well as art dealer. She studied fine art internationally beginning with a A.S. degree from Strykejernet Kunstskole in Oslo, Norway followed by a BFA in New Genres at San Francisco Art Institute.  She also writes Art World Reports via her private newsletter at www.larrysaltz.com.  Matthew is a Director at Fairchain, and previously worked at both Christie's and Goldman Sachs.  We hit on everything from NFTs, to Art Basel, to the state of the art industry today.

Leading the Art World Towards Sustainability

Leading the Art World Towards Sustainability

Art has the power to change the world by highlighting critical issues, but what responsibility does the art world have to make their own changes and take inventory of internal practices that are unsustainable or inequitable, to address the environmental cost of putting on exhibitions? In this episode, Iwona Blazwick, Director of the renowned Whitechapel Gallery in East London, grapples with these questions on the future of museums and galleries. Miami: Past, Present, Future -- & The New Underline Park, With Founder Meg Daly

Miami: Past, Present, Future -- & The New Underline Park, With Founder Meg Daly

The Underline, a 10-mile linear park, urban trail and public arts destination, will meander from the Miami River to Dadeland South under the Miami Metrorail. With its first section, "Brickell Backyard" newly opened, Meg Daly, Founder and President of Friends of the Underline, talks with Lea about Miami's past, present and future.

-- Lea and Meg both grew up in  the Miami area a generation apart. Lea remembers Miami Beach of the past 50 years: no air conditioning, the airport not much more than a hangar, mosquitos sprayed from above with DDT, and much more.

-- Meg tells of growing up in an activist family in the Miami suburb of Coral Gables, in a vintage Spanish-style house. Her family came from Boston in 1960 and was active in keeping the gorgeous Biltmore Hotel from being destroyed.

-- At the beginning of the Millennium, when Miami still did not have a cultural center, Meg's father, Parker Thompson, who would later help plan The Underline, was involved in developing the Arsht Performing Arts center. It influenced an arts scene including museums, Art Basel, Wynwood, and new neighborhoods designed by great architects, spawning great restaurants.

-- Along with progress came heavy traffic  -- and that is where The Underline comes in, bringing us a 10-mile linear park by 2025, leading to a network of parks and trails with native plants, butterflies,  places to connect --"it equals life!"

-- Meg talks about the first section completed, "Brickell Backyard," from the Miami River through Brickell Village.

-- And the four thousand new trees and green design will help Miami get through climate change.

And last, Meg remembers how she conceived of The Underline --combining past, present and future in an engrossing memory.
