    Rant of the Week (15:53)

The 'nothing-happened' Y2K bug – how the IT industry worked overtime to save world's computers

Forty years ago, both Jerome and Marilyn Murray saw their brainchild reach the light of day. In 1984, their book, Computers in Crisis, was published, becoming the first authoritative guide to the Millennium Bug coding problem, which, in the final year of the century, would consume media, political and business attention.

Today, more than 20 years after the date-field imposed deadline passed, the Millennium Bug — or Y2K problem — still gets a mixed reception.

While many in the industry see it as a job well done — or at least adequately done — it has also become a byword for the over-reach of experts.

Forbes article: Viral TikTok Video Of Cloudflare Employee Is A Lesson On How To Not Fire Workers

Recently, many of the new workplace trends have emanated from TikTok. Influencers have ushered in new themes, such as bare minimum Mondays, acting your wage, quiet quitting and rage applying. A new phenomenon has arisen where employees are now documenting their layoffs on the social media platform.

This week, Brittany Pietsch, a mid-market account executive at Cloudflare, an Internet infrastructure provider that offers a variety of security, performance and reliability services for websites and applications, went viral after posting a video of her being let go from the tech company.

Pietsch anticipated her firing, as her “work bff” had been given the pink slip 30 minutes prior to her meeting. The account executive was joined on a video call by a member of the human resources team and another individual, who didn’t introduce himself and jumped right into the purpose of the call, “We have an important meeting today. We finished our evaluations of 2023 performance. This is where you have not met Cloudflare expectations for performance. We have decided to part ways with you.”

    Ep 20 - Loyalty Cards

    Ep 20 - Loyalty Cards

Collectively we have £1 billion tied up on loyalty cards and apps.  Sounds a lot but on average we have less than £20.  That said we should spend it as we try to save as much as possible on our groceries and Christmas.
The loyalty schemes want us to spend more and are currently sending lots of offers to earn extra points but Mrs Mean warns that no one should spend more to get points that they cannot turn into cash for months.
Special prices offered by apps complicate our shopping even more.   Beware they may not be so special and may not be applied at the till.

If you've got a money saving idea you'd like Mrs Mean to get her teeth into, please send a message

Building Data Systems from Scratch with Anna Barsby, Founder & Managing Partner at Tessiant

Building Data Systems from Scratch with Anna Barsby, Founder & Managing Partner at Tessiant

This episode features an interview with Anna Barsby, Founder and Managing Partner at Tessiant, a UK-based management consultancy, and the former CIO of Asda. As a people and change leader, Anna has spent her career helping to build cultures through the implementation and adoption of technology.

On this episode, Anna talks about the incredible opportunity of building a data system from scratch, what it was like to start her own organization during the pandemic, and how Asda recently partnered up with Dell to provide 7,000 laptops to school children in need.

    3 Takeaways:

    • When it comes to technology, you’ve got to be very clear on the business outcome you’re after and why you’re using it. Technology for technology’s sake will not bring an organization along, but articulating how it can get you to your goal faster, cheaper, and in a more productive way will.
    • Similarly, technology works best when it brings teams together across an operation and helps build cultures of collaboration and trust. It falters when it is over-engineered and loses sight of what retailers fundamentally do.
    • The challenge of overhauling an organization’s systems is no small feat. For some, it is like rebuilding a plane in midair. For others, it is akin to being in a swivel chair needing to seamlessly transition users from one system to another. The opportunity is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking and requires expertise on both a systems and business front.

    Key Quotes:

    • “As a technologist, you have to talk to business people in their own language and about their outcomes. There is no point talking about the systems or even the data.”
    • “I've seen examples in my past where some of the big consultancies have tried to over-engineer grocers or retailers....and several of the chief execs have said, ‘look, we’re shopkeepers, and we've got to be good shopkeepers. The tech has its place and will absolutely enable, but don't lose sight of what we fundamentally do.’”
    • “One of the reasons I keep coming back to retail is because with technology you’re very close to the customer, and you're very close to your business colleagues, and you can see the impact that you make.”

Asda: Communicating for a supermarket during a global pandemic

Asda: Communicating for a supermarket during a global pandemic

Chris Lowe, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at Asda talks to Daisy about what happens at a supermarket when a global pandemic hits, how Covid has changed his relationships with MPs, and the innovations he'll be keeping when the pandemic is over.

    Key takeaways include:

    • First, be realistic. In many situations the chances of your organization pleasing 100% of your stakeholders may be zero. So how else can you judge success? Are there better indicators that you can use to understand performance?
    • Second, be wary of the signals you are sending. As Asda improved its Covid security, MPs and civil servants began to assume that they were relaxing the rules. This shows how important it is to look out for hints of the proxy measures that your stakeholders use to assess your performance – something that you should be picking up in stakeholder audits but you will also need to be attentive to in your everyday conversations.
    • Third: Be thoughtful about how you deploy your team. Chris told us that if he could repeat 2020 he would be faster to draft in support from other areas of the business in order to safeguard the wellbeing of his team.
    • Finally, we could all do with remembering Chris’ exhortation to pick up the phone – it really can make all of the difference.

    Episode 8 - Mark Denton

    Episode 8 - Mark Denton

Mark joined us in his finery of a Denton branded tracksuit, peaky blinder cap complete with bobble on top and of course trainers and sunnies. What more could we have expected from one of the most incredible London ad men over the last 40 years. Although don’t call him an ad man… he makes films…. “Please send your scripts to www.thomasthomasfilms.co.uk”.

Please visit https://getbehindthebillboard.com/?p=340 for the images to follow along.

Mark joined us with gifts [others take note, we like gifts], we talked briefly about his book the Power of Purelity. You can buy it here, and Mark will chuck in some free gifts… www.coy-com.com/shop

Mark reckons there’s a revival going on in Outdoor, some great work sitting proudly from the rest… Mark credits Nils Leonards Uncommon for their work on Habito, Droga5 for Coal Drops Yard, and Atomic for their work on the Royal Opera House posters:

Marks first billboard was for Milk Tray, something he concepted up with the late and great Norman Icke [who came up with the original idea for the milk tray man] while Mark was ‘just a visualiser’ at Leo Burnett. Within weeks Mark was hanging out in New York ready to shoot on top of the JCPenney building.

Mark met his long term creative partners Chris Palmer on set for a TV shoot, a set he shouldn’t have been on! The shoot was for Cadbury’s creme egg, and he’d slipped one of his ideas in with the creative teams one. On a sound stage at Pinewood he bumped into Chris, and he got Mark into BBH within months. Mark recalls John Hegarty hating half of his book in the interview…. But Chris helped nudge John in the right direction.

4 1/2 years later… Mark and Chris left to setup Simons Palmer Denton Clemmow Johnson where they worked on Nike among others. We talked about all of the poster work they did…. Originally they were engaged only for Soccer… but soon worked on Rugby, basketball, running, Olympics and many many others.

Of all of them, Mark picked out the Ian Wright football poster. ‘Behind every great goalkeeper there’s a ball from Ian Wright’.

We talked about Advantage Sampras, Charles Barkley and the Marathon no U turns. With the latter 2 styled graphically on political propaganda posters.

We moved on to Wrangler, and a lesson to all you creatives out there. If you believe in your concepts keep pushing as hard as you can. If you can invest in your idea and to help sell the concept to your client it might help get great work away.

Then onto another important lesson. Paying your suppliers back for the proactive work you get them working on. Having Malcom shoot the test work, led to more work for the agency and therefore more for Malcom.

Asda we spent a bit of time talking about a favourite execution for Free Range Eggs, featuring a model made chicken on a motorbike, escaping the chicken farm in the style of The Great Escape. The humour is there on all of the executions.

Heineken too had that humour running through it.

Top Tip: Don’t leave it on a Piece a paper. Mark gave us the example of his Samson Batteries, which he’d visualised up as a poster. He managed to turn that poster into 3 TV commercials!

Favourite Billboard of all time. BEANS MEANS HEINZ. Bring back the slogan!
