The Cultural Heritage of Agave Syrup

The Cultural Heritage of Agave Syrup

There’s Mrs. Butterworth’s, and then there’s fine Vermont maple syrup. And the same extremes exist for agave syrup. But here’s the thing: the artisanal version of agave syrup has this whole cultural heritage aspect to it. And you’ve probably only been able to access Mrs. Agaveworth’s. Until now! It’s a sticky, chicken-feather-covered episode of Agave Road Trip!

Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. This episode is hosted by Lou Bank with special co-host Linda Sullivan of seynasecreto.

Ep - 31 The High Cost of Convenience

Ep - 31 The High Cost of Convenience

Grocery price inflation is over 16% making it difficult to budget.  The discounters are regularly the cheapest in research by Which?, the consumer group, but often customers do not have one of their stores nearby.

Sainsbury and Tesco are the cheapest of the big supermarkets , but we have to be careful which of their stores we use. Tesco Extra and Sainsbury Local do not have the same prices as the group's larger stores.

Which? estimates that regular shoppers at Tesco Extra can pay more than £800 extra a year with the likes of Kipling Bakewell slices costing 28% more at the smaller stores.  At Sainsbury Local the extra cost can be £400 a year.   Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup was 19% more at the Local stores.

So, they are definitely too expensive for a big shop.   Too often we call in for a bag of pasta and are tempted by other items and end up buying a full basket at the expensive store.

There is also less choice with big branded groceries taking up lots of space on the shelves.   The loyalty prices offered to Nectar and Clubcard holders may also not be available.

The most essential thing is to allow time wherever you shop.   Rushing in to a store on the way home is likely to cost you more than you can afford.

    Ep 20 - Loyalty Cards

    Ep 20 - Loyalty Cards

Collectively we have £1 billion tied up on loyalty cards and apps.  Sounds a lot but on average we have less than £20.  That said we should spend it as we try to save as much as possible on our groceries and Christmas.
The loyalty schemes want us to spend more and are currently sending lots of offers to earn extra points but Mrs Mean warns that no one should spend more to get points that they cannot turn into cash for months.
Special prices offered by apps complicate our shopping even more.   Beware they may not be so special and may not be applied at the till.

Alfred K. LaMotte, Fred, Uplifting and Awakening Poet, and Interfaith Chaplain

In this episode, we share a beautiful heart-centered and heart-awakening conversation with an Interfaith chaplain and college instructor in world religions, Alfred K. LaMotte, familiar to us as Fred.

    • We get invited to walk barefoot and un-name the stars
    • We learn that when you have no agenda life can be so original and simple
    • We admit that we have wings that are vast and crystal
    • We P-R-A-Y together and P-R-E-Y together until a flame of healing arises and we purr
    • We give ourselves permission to eat whatever is delicious
    • Hear how an aspiring general has alchemized into a warrior of the spirit
    • We honor inhalation like a royal guest and make a spacious tent of our flesh
    • We learn that the one who whirled the stars into life has come into our body as this breath and unless we become hollow….we won’t be filled with music
    • We remember that when we are aware of our own flesh under our feet we save the earth by savoring the earth

Fred has published five books of poems, “Wounded Bud: Poems for Meditation, / “Shimmering Birthless: A Confluence of Verse and Image”,/ “Savor Eternity One Moment At A Time”, / “The Fire of Darkness: What Burned Me Away Completely, I Became”, and his forthcoming and highly anticipated book, “The Nectar of This Breath”… from Saint Julian Press, scheduled for release the week this episode was recorded.

Fred is a graduate of Yale University and Princeton Theological Seminary, He is a meditation guide who loves to gather circles for meditation and poetry.

He lives in a small town on Puget Sound with his beloved wife Anna. It is rumored that he “…loves to walk barefoot in the wet grass at midnight, un-naming the stars.”

Fred says, "The radical act is being present. The revolution is to breathe."   Let’s be radically present with him and breathe his poetry as prayer!

    15.11.21 - NRI Special - Episode 1 - Bees & Caffeine

    15.11.21 - NRI Special - Episode 1 - Bees & Caffeine

Join host Linden Kemkaran as she speaks to Phil Stevenson, Professor of Plant Chemistry at the Natural Resources Institute, and Head of the Chemical Ecology Research Group at the University of Greenwich.

Phil describes how he and his team wondered, if humans’ performance and memory can be enhanced by caffeine, could the stimulant have the same effect on bees?

By using an experiment called ‘conditioned learning’ (aka Pavlov’s dogs) Professor Stevenson provided bees with a food reward of liquid sugar while he wafted a plume of odour across their antennae so that they associated that smell with good food. Using caffeine helped this process and the bees made the association more quickly.

When the bees went out foraging the next day, they were much more able to remember a specific cue and a route that enabled them to gather good food sources, or nectar. Memory is a very important part of success for pollinating insects and the caffeine enabled the bees to remember things for much longer.

Fun Fact: Caffeine is a fairly simple chemical that has evolved as a naturally occurring ‘defence’ chemical in many different crops, not just tea and coffee, but in legumes, citrus and ivy plants protecting them from insect herbivores. In high concentration it is bitter and sometimes toxic, but in low concentration in the nectar it is hardly noticeable, and it serves as an attractant and an aide memoir for pollinators.

Hummingbirds: Tiny Acrobats And The Marvel of the Bird World

Hummingbirds: Tiny Acrobats And The Marvel of the Bird World

Hummingbirds are the world’s smallest bird species, with a heart rate of 500 beats-per-minute on average and a breathing rate of 250/minute. Hummingbirds are nearly always on the edge of starvation, so they need to eat their body weight in nectar each day. Which might explain why some female white-necked Jacobin hummingbirds have evolved to look like male hummingbirds. Because, guess what? Male hummingbirds can be jerks.

In The Good The Bad The New

    The Bad:
The EU has removed US travelers from Covid safe list. This is because of all the idiots out there that will take horse medication but not the actual vaccine.

    The Good:
Thank you to the San Francisco Airport (SFO) for protecting the San Francisco garter snakes and red-legged frogs. We at Better Than Human are friends of Snakes and Frogs.

Hummingbirds are tiny acrobats with the fastest wingbeat of all birds, (70 strokes per second or more than 4,000 per minute). Unlike other birds, they can hover, fly backwards, and even fly upside down! Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of all animals. They had an amazing amount of energy and live a relatively long time for their size.

Hummingbirds are native only to the Americas and thrive from Alaska to the tip of South America and are specialized to the flowers they eat from.

Listen now to learn about these tiny marvels of the bird world.

The Honey that Hums and Blazes: Somatic Nectars of the Trance State

The Honey that Hums and Blazes: Somatic Nectars of the Trance State

Honey was revered across the ancient world — found in Egyptian tombs and Chinese apothecaries and referred to glowingly in ancient Sumerian medical texts. The myths and stories that come to us from the ancient world are soaked in honey. Honey is certainly a remarkable substance. But is that enough to explain the presence of liquid nectar in myth upon myth upon myth? There are strange commonalities in the myths and stories about nectar and honey. The association of honey and immortality. The descriptions of cascades or rivers of honey or nectar. Honey described as luminous dew. Associations of honey with rapture and prophecy. Associations of honey with sound and with particularly effulgent qualities of light. When we delve into the myths and stories, we find that the prevalence of liquid nectar in myth can only lead to the conclusion that the honey being spoken of is experiential — it is a nectar of felt experience. Specifically, the nectar of heightened awareness, of trance. Today on the podcast, we steep in the honeys of consciousness, and find a common vision of luminous, sonorous liquid that pervades mystic discourse around the world.

Limited Appeal - That is so Takis
Welcome back! Have you washed your hands? Either way, keep your soggy end out of the dip. Warren asks whether Timmy was right in suggesting that George from Seinfeld put his whole mouth in the tip. Remember the before-time, when this might have been a question? It's hard to imagine now, but at one stage it was somewhat defensible to dip near someone else, and maybe even do so twice, depending on rotation and the number of chip protuberances. If you know can clarify the benefits of tube-shaped chips, or know which of our episodes contains a discussion of aphid honeydew, send us an email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net).
