031: In The Chaos And Using My Voice

031: In The Chaos And Using My Voice

Today I'm looking back at a time when things seemed to be pretty "normal" and in the time it took to receive a phone call, the world went wonky! It's been a doozy, hasn't it!? Do you have questions about what's been happening for the past 365+ days? Do some things maybe just feel a little bit off? A year ago, would you have thought we would be where we are today? I sure didn't!

This episode is raw and real and I get a little shouty (along with some giggles) but I share what has been bottled up inside for the past year and my encouragement to you to stand for yourself and your kiddos. Make your own decisions, even when they aren't popular and ask questions. Questions are good! My hope is that it will inspire you to open up and share if you have questions, concerns, or just want to talk to someone about the craziness. This episode may not be for everyone and that's ok! Take it for what it is and move on to the next one. I think it's a good thing to have different opinions, to respect each other for those differences, and to be open to having conversations. Even with our differences we can support and cheer for each other as Moms and as human beings and continue our journey 'Smiling Through The Chaos'!

027: Are You Afraid To Ask For Help?

027: Are You Afraid To Ask For Help?

Do you ask for help? If not, you should! I am totally guilty of not asking for help, so today I wanted to dive in and give you permission to ask!!

How will we ever get anywhere when we aren't willing to ask for help? Most of my life I've been afraid to ask the questions or seek guidance because I don't want to put people out or feel stupid, so I muddle along on my own and figure it out. In hindsight, things would have gone a lot easier and faster had I just asked for some help or asked questions.

There are people out there who WANT to help you! You have to be open to receiving or it will never happen! My lot in life is to help other people, but how am I able to do that efficiently and with more ease without seeking answers on my end? I am all for researching and figuring things out, but there is nothing wrong with asking for help or having a coach to get you there even faster!

I would love for you to let me know what your biggest takeaway from today’s episode was- take a screenshot of you listening and tag me or hit me up with a DM on IG
@livingjoyfulandwell. Feel free to send me a message at jenn@livingjoyfulandwell.com also! I'm  here and I can’t wait to hear from you!

Being curious is an important life skill. It can help our kids achieve more. It can make them happier. It is can be a gift they offer the people they care about in their lives.

A few practical ideas to help our kids be curious.

    • Be humble.
    • Model curiosity in life.
    • Mode curiosity by asking our children lots of open-ended questions. For more on this listen to our episode #48: The Power of Curiosity.
    • Follow their interests.
    • Have your kids practice forming opinions and points of view.
    • Ask them to teach us something because teaching helps them gain mastery.

The Stat of the Week is about the NASA Mars rover, Curiosity.

      • "A good teacher inspires, captivates, and gets kids to think by sharing profound knowledge and perfectly crafted questions..."
    • Harvard Business Review: The Business Case for Curiosity
      • “Tenelle Porter, a postdoctoral scholar in psychology at the University of California, Davis, describes intellectual humility as the ability to acknowledge that what we know is sharply limited. As her research demonstrates, higher levels of intellectual humility are associated with a greater willingness to consider views other than our own. People with more intellectual humility also do better in school and at work. Why? When we accept that our own knowledge is finite, we are more apt to see that the world is always changing and that the future will diverge from the present. By embracing this insight, leaders and employees can begin to recognize the power of exploration.”

FOSDEM will have its own dedicated Matrix server at fosdem.org (hosted by EMS along with a ton of Jitsi’s) acting as the social backbone for the event Official bridges will be provided to IRC and XMPP (and most other chat systems), giving as much openness and choice as possible - if folks want to participate via Freenode and XMPP they can! FOSDEM has spent a lot of time improving widgets recently: these give the ability to embed arbitrary webapps into chatrooms - letting you add livestreams, video conferences, schedules, Q&A dashboards etc, augmenting a plain old chatroom into a much richer virtual experience that can hopefully capture the semantics and requirements of an event like FOSDE Attendees can lurk as read-only guests in devrooms without needing to set up accounts (or they can of course use their existing Matrix/IRC/XMPP accounts) Every devroom and track will have its own chatroom, where the audience can hang out and view the livestream of that particular devroom (using the normal FOSDEM video livestream system). There will also be a ‘backstage’ room per track for coordination between the devroom organisers and the speakers. The talks themselves will be prerecorded to minimise risk of disaster, but each talk will have a question & answer session at the end which will be a live Jitsi broadcast from the speaker and a host who will relay questions from the devroom. Each talk will have a dedicated room too, where after the official talk slot the audience can pop in and chat to the speaker more informally if they’re available (by text and/or by moderated jitsi). During the talk, this room will act as the ‘stage’ for the speaker & host to watch the livestream and conduct the question & answer session. Every stand will also have its own chatroom and optional jitsi+livestream, as will BOFs or other adhoc events, so folks can get involved both by chat and video There’ll also be a set of official support, social etc rooms - and of course folks can always create their own! FOSDEM Matrix bot (https://github.com/matrix-org/conference-bot), responsible for orchestrating the hundreds of required rooms, setting up the right widgets and permissions, setting up bridges to IRC & XMPP, and keeping everything in sync with the official live FOSDEM schedule. Call for help Folks on XMPP often complain that the Bifröst Matrix<->XMPP bridge doesn’t support MAMs - meaning that if XMPP users lose connection, they lose scrollback. We’re not going to have time to fix this ourselves in time, so this would be a great time for XMPP folks who grok xmpp.js to come get involved and help to ensure the best possible XMPP experience! It’d be really nice to be able to render nice schedule widgets for each devroom, and embed the overall schedule in the support rooms etc. The current HTML schedules https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/day/saturday/ and https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/room/vcollab/ don’t exactly fit - if someone could write a thing which renders them at (say) 2:5 aspect ratio so they can fit nicely down the side of a chatroom then that could be awesome! While we’ll bridge all the official rooms over to Freenode, it’d be even nicer if people could just hop straight into any room on the FOSDEM server (or beyond) via IRC - effectively exposing the whole thing as an IRC network for those who prefer IRC. We have a project to do this: matrix-ircd, but it almost certainly needs more love and polish before it could be used for something as big as this. If you like Rust and know Matrix, please jump in and get involved! If you just want to follow along or help out, then we’ve created a general room for discussion over at #fosdem-matrix:fosdem.org. It’d be awesome to have as many useful bots & widgets as possible to help things along. You can read a deep-dive on them here, but the more important requirement is for financial institutions to collect the name and physical address of both parties of any large transaction they’re involved in. Jack Dorsey is not happy about new crypto currency law (https://www.theverge.com/2021/1/4/22213863/jack-dorsey-cryptocurrency-fincen-regulation-letter) Dorsey argues the regulation could end up driving customers “to use non-custodial wallets or services outside the U.S. to transfer their assets more easily,” leading to FinCEN having “less visibility into the universe of cryptocurrency transactions than it has today.” Put simply, if people have to provide private information to a bank in order to make a transaction, they’ll avoid using the bank — something the CEO describes as a perverse incentive. Ep 31 | Using your unique skills and talents to land your dream job with your dream company with Abby Nimoh

Today I have the absolute pleasure of speaking with Abby Nimoh of NimoHR about how in the world to apply for your dream job at your dream company! Because let's face it. Not all of us are cut out to work for ourselves. And not because we're not all hard workers with ambition. I think most people really are those people. But I fully completely believe that we are all made with unique gifts and talents and half the time, those skills are meant for supporting others. The world would never go around the way it is meant if EVERYONE was meant to be an entrepreneur, just like the world would never go around if everyone was meant to be an employee. So... first things first, figure out where you belong in the business world and then go full force.

So today's episode is dedicated to those loyal and committed employees looking for the best company and the best position for yourself... and Abby is the perfect person to have this conversation with because she has been in HR for 15 years, launched her company NimoHR last year and is simultaneously the manager for an AZ software company that's been recognized as one of the top firms to work for in the state. I'm sure Abby had SOMETHING to do with that! she has the inside scoop on what employers are looking for in candidates. Throughout her career she has read thousands of resumes, conducted thousands of interviews and unfortunately has sent thousands of “Dear John” letters. She knows the hiring process inside and out, but more importantly she know the hiring process from the employer’s perspective. She utilizes the insights and experience she gained from working on the other side of the desk to provide an advantage to every one of her clients.

    Receiving Legacy (2 of 4)

    Receiving Legacy (2 of 4)
A legacy is about creating memories and experiences together. It can be intentional; or it can be just by chance. Every person is going to leave a legacy. The only thing you can decide on is: what it will be? Will it be stumbling stones for the next generation; or blessings, and a way that they can go ahead?

    Burnt Stones (2 of 4)

    Burnt Stones (2 of 4)
There is no believer in Christ who's not called to restore burnt stones. True religion is to visit the widows and the orphans in their affliction, to visit the burnt stones and comfort them. You cannot have a vibrant, vital spirit life and not minister to burnt stones. That is the heart of God - people, ruined cities, burnt stones, devastations of generations. God wants to heal and restore them. Passionless religion is a curse. It's not Biblical. Conservative, passionless, expressionless religion does not change anything. God wants a fire ignited in our hearts, a fire for the lost, a fire for burnt stones, a fire that's not just come out of human concern and sympathy, a fire that's ignited out of the place of prayer and fasting! God gives every believer an axe head - it's the anointing of the Holy Ghost. It's your responsibility not to lose the flow of God's power and presence. It's your responsibility to keep that axe head sharp - to learn to listen, hear, and respond-to to the voice of God, to do the things God's showing you to do, wherever it might be. We're all called to be an axe for Jesus Christ.
