Protect Black Women - 'You Cannot Speak On An Experience You Have Never Lived.' (••TRIGGER WARNING••)

    Recorded: 08/02/2021
Black Women have been the backbone of the NHS, the NHS was built on the back and sweat of Black Women. Reading the statistics in the UK, Black Women are 5 times more likely to die during childbirth, the statistics are chilling. To explore this without using Black Women as the mouth-piece undermines the Black Woman experience and erases our experiences. It is beyond me and incomprehensible how a mixed-race woman - Rochelle Humes who is more palatable to her white audience having proximity to whiteness and access to private health care can ever explore, understand, narrate and deliver the experiences that Black Women have had at the hands of the health care system.

Medical racism has sought to negligent and mistreats Black Women ignoring that we also feel pain instead our very existence is filled with trauma and tales of the health care system placing no value on our lives. We are often made to feel that our very existence is intrinsic to pain. Why are all our experiences the same or similar..... because the health care system fails Black Women and we have the statistics and the experiences to prove it.

Candice Braithwaite has been advocating for Black Women raising awareness of the mistreatment of Black Women during childbirth. Candice has done the leg work she has invested knowledge and created awareness in the Black community. Instead of her telling her story and many of ours, it's Rochelle Humes a privileged bi-racial woman who represents a different statistic and has now centered herself in delivering a documentary about Black Women.

Rochelle Humes asked in a recent Instagram post announcing her role in delivering this documentary that she wants our opinion, so in this episode, I give her mine.

    Code-Switching - Working Whilst Black

    Code-Switching - Working Whilst Black

We all do it, damn some of us are doing it now. In this episode, I define code-switching and explain where I have code-stitched in the workplace. We will also explore the impact of code-switching and often the obstacles it creates. When is it ok to code-switch? What are the effects of code-switching? How can you code-switch to your advantage?

Code-switching - 'In essence, it's the language, mannerisms, and body language we use when in the company of peers from a different class and/or race.'

    Sister 2 Sister

    Sister 2 Sister

During the Covid-19 Pandemic 2020 Chantel, Kanika, and Dionne were inspired by the ‘Miracle Morning’ by Hal Elrod to reassess their values and to create an extraordinary life for themselves and others. They write:

"Our Big Sister Programme supports young people in visualising and vocalising their dreams and aspirations. We offer practical strategies to positively change attitudes and behaviours to achieve transformation in the areas which have presented as challenging for them. We provide a bespoke programme which builds upon what the young person recognises as good about themselves. Our approach is always positive. Mentoring isn’t just about talking. We work on building life skills, confidence in social settings, resilience and overcoming difficulties plus so much more. Our programme empowers young people to develop positive peer relationships, deal with peer pressure, and focus more on their own feelings of self-worth."

A young BAME female lacking aspiration can have a devastating impact upon their future and social positioning, which in turn may affect generation after generation. Sister2Sister want to break down boundaries, which is why they decided to create an opportunity for young women to cultivate their self-esteem, develop their confidence and become visionaries; because they know that young women who have confidence along with positive role models who believe in their abilities and skills are unstoppable.

The directors have a passion for personal development and growth. For several years, theye have explored a variety of personal development theories and coaching and mentoring techniques. They want to share these and utilise their experiences to serve the community that has helped shape the women that they have become.

Questions to ask 13-21 year olds:

    • Are you going through a lot of changes at the moment?
    • Are your studies and education starting to feel overwhelming?
    • Do you feel as though you don’t fit in with your ‘friends’ or ‘family’?
    • Do you feel lonely sometimes?
    • Are you concerned about your next steps?
    • Do you sometimes lack motivation?
    • Do you need support with your goals and aspirations?
    • Do you wish you had someone to talk to who won’t judge you?

Being mentored is like having a friend who looks out for you. A mentor isn’t like a teacher, a parent, or a social worker, they’re just an adult you can talk to.

Bea - Product Marketing Director in broadcast who lives with the impacts of Bell's Palsy

Bea Alonso, works as Product Marketing Director for Dalet - they help media organisations with the global distribution of their content to increase audience engagement. Having woke up one day with one side of her face paralysed, Bea talks through the impact that has had on her. The cause wasn’t a stroke but a viral condition called Bell’s Palsy. Not many people know about this and Bea got in touch with me to tell me her story. Her top three Keeping It Reals are around serendipity, being tolerant and respectful, and to never stop learning. She also talks about the importance as a leader to make the most of other people’s strengths because you can’t know everything!

    Hiding In Your Trauma

    Hiding In Your Trauma

In this episode, I discuss workplace trauma.

Black women are often stripped of human emotion, instead, white fragility is protected and nurtured. Black women are taught that any show of emotion is a display of weakness. This damaging thinking is destructive and limits our growth. Struggle is not a pre-requisite for success, pain and struggle are not a show of strength.

Uschi - a counsellor talking about overcoming your childhood

Uschi - a counsellor talking about overcoming your childhood

Uschi used to be my counsellor. She featured in a bonus episode in series 1 to share her three 'Keeping It Reals' for others to feel more content. Following great feedback from that particular episode, I asked Uschi to join me again with a focus on helping young adults, however, what was discussed is applicable to everyone. We talk about three points from a book called How to Overcome Your Childhood: 1) Attraction to Difficult Partners, 2) Potential traumas behind overachieving 3) The need to strive for an emotional understanding of the past. It’s a very good read and is available to buy from The School Of Life: https://www.theschooloflife.com/shop/how-to-overcome-your-childhood-book/.

We also refer to a film available on YouTube based on the book called The Secret which discusses the theory of the law of attraction. If you’re interested in watching this you can do so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfGgUww6uFU&t=3464s

Sindy - Head of Film Birmingham

Sindy is Head of Film Birmingham and supports productions filming in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands area. She is also owner of Black Star Productions, they are currently in the process of producing a film and have 3 projects in development. Her ‘Keeping It Reals’ were around her family, re-engaging with her roots and heritage, and making time for self development.

**This was recorded in September 2020 where Tanya stupidly refers to being in a post-Covid environment not realising that UK was going to have a second wave of infections, worst than the first time round and that the country would go into a second lockdown 🤦🏻‍♀️😬🙈

    Self Sabotage - (Part 1)

    Self Sabotage - (Part 1)

We all need to take responsibility for the blessings we undo by opening our mouths.  It's not everyone that must know you have a job interview or have the privilege of knowing where your breakthrough lies. The Public Service Announcements we make in some cases causes our blessings to pass us. As we navigate the working world there are some things we have to work on in our SELF.

    Simon - The Humanist Celebrant

    Simon - The Humanist Celebrant

Simon’s wife died tragically from a brain tumour. From diagnosis to death it was just three weeks, leaving him and his two young daughters to navigate a new way of living without her. Simon then became a Humanist Celebrant.

What’s a Humanist Celebrant? Well, Simon helps families celebrate life when it has passed, life as it begins through a naming ceremony and the coming together of two people through the ritual of marriage. All of these celebrations are for non-religious people who above all else value the human spirit and connection as we see it and experience it every day. Whilst Simon still works in the UK broadcast industry, much of his time is dedicated with his work in humanism. Simon’s top three ‘Keeping It Reals’ are brilliant and one of my favourites so far where we talk about campfires, our energy as humans living long after we’re gone and that happiness is a choice.

You can find out more about Simon and his work as a humanist celebrant here: https://humanist.org.uk/simonsmith/

Markela - a Greek female broadcast engineer working in the UK

Markela - a Greek female broadcast engineer working in the UK

Markela, originally from Greece, works as a broadcast engineer for NEP UK. Her top three ‘Keeping It Reals’ are around being a broadcast engineer and doing the job she loves, advocating more women to take up engineering roles and being proud to be Greek whilst living in the UK albeit it does have its challenges.

Markela also shares some insights around things to consider on an outside broadcast when it comes to Covid-19 and working in a predominantly male dominated profession. *This was recorded in the summer with making references to Love Island, which I hadn’t realised had been cancelled because I don’t watch it!* 🙈🤷🏻‍♀️  Don’t judge me!

Gus - head of production at Red Bull Media House

Gus had a rather interesting pathway to getting into the media industry. He was actually a professional footballer! Realising that he had to make some hard decisions whether to pursue a career in football, he found another passion in broadcast media.

His career has been varied, working on all sorts of productions and has for the last three years he has been working as Head of Production at Red Bull Media House. As a black man of Caribbean heritage, he reflects on how he has had to work twice as hard, the values instilled in him by his mother and how social mobility can play tricks on one’s mind.

Framing Is Not Just For Pictures

Framing Is Not Just For Pictures

Over the last few years, I have come to understand the importance of framing information. What is framing information? Framing Information- is how you position information and communicate it to others, being honest in that communication but communicating it in an effective way and a professional manner in order to get your point across. How you frame information is dependent on YOU. A lot of people in the workplace are too quick to react after being provoked and at the first given opportunity one sends an email. In the heat of the moment filled with emotions (anger), you decide to send an email.

People underestimate the importance of communication and in turn how to communicate effectively.

In this episode, I discuss provocation and how we fall foul of being provoked in the workplace and the consequences. But if we find the courage and opportunity to step back and assess the situation the importance of framing a situation and communicating in an effective way can be the difference between whether you are able to manage a difficult work situation effectively enough to get the result you want.

Asma Shah - how can we become anti-racist?

Asma Shah - how can we become anti-racist?
In this episode of The Speakeasier, we chat with the glorious Asma Shah, founder and CEO of empowerment organisation You Make It, and advisor on the Mayor of London's Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion board. Asma is open about her experience of the negative effects of gentrification, solitude within her industry and first-hand racism. Now, she’s empowering young women to thrive in the working environment and showing others how to push back against racism, whatever form it takes. If you’re wondering how to put action against racism, this one is definitely worth a listen.

Sallee - the human brand strategist

Sallee - the human brand strategist

Sallee owns an award winning, London-based brand strategy agency, with a passion for being human. She talks about embracing our difference and how by doing this you can differentiate yourself from the other 7 billion humans on this planet.

We also talk about the value of kindness and our shared love of poetry, with Sallee reading out three pieces that have meant something to her at different points in her life. One of the pieces was written by a stranger who she’ll never know. They saw her crying and without her realising it, left her with a parting gift that has stayed with her always. Sometimes we humans are amazingly kind creatures…
