    Fuck The Rules Podcast
    Season 4 Episode 19

I was incredibly fortunate that my guest, Bhavna Raithatha had time on her day off to sit and chat with me for this episode.

Bhavna is a force of nature: teaching, speaking, volunteering. She's got an incredible survival journey through her life of multiple traumas and experienced racism since she was a young girl, and she's using her voice to advocate and educate folx. And even if my power messed up a chunk of the chat with Bhavna, there's so much of her journey she tells that I feel gives yet another perspective of a lived experience.

    PLEASE NOTE:
We discuss the following topics that may be distressing to listeners - various trauma experiences, stalking and violence, loss, abuse, medical issues, suicide/suicidal ideation, racism.

ACAS gives employees and employers free impartial advice and mediation on workplace disputes, employment rights, and best practices.

ACAS must be used before approaching an employment tribunal. The view is that an employment tribunal must be used as the last resort and therefore ACAS provides a service of mediation to find a compromise in a workplace disputes. In the event that a compromise cannot be found and a Claimant has exhausted a grievance process and therefore not found a resolution through ACAS, a Claimant can take an employment matter to an Employment Tribunal.

In this episode I will be discussing my friend's case which we took to ACAS I managed to negotiate an out-of-court settlement for her of nearly £50k and renegotiated the terms of that settlement which included:

    1. Payment within 7 days
    2. A tax-Free settlement with all tax liability to be fully paid by her employer to HMRC
    3. Payment of 10 therapy sessions
    4. Agreed wording for an employment reference
    5. Letter of retraction and an apology in writing for a false accusation made during the course of her employment.
    6. Payment in lieu of notice to enable her to leave this employment on full pay for 3 months.

We will be using her employment dispute as a case study for this episode.

    Race discrimination

    Race discrimination

Can an employer really claim to have strong ESG credentials if they aren’t addressing societal issues like race equality and discrimination, and if they’re simply relying on policies and training?

How can employers meet the changing expectations of regulators, investors, employees, job candidates and clients?

The legal definition of race is much broader than many people realise. In this episode, Kanika Kitchlu-Connolly, co-chair of TLT’s BAME network, joins our employment team to discuss:

    • Why this is so challenging but important for employers to get right
    • The role of employee networks, from sharing information and lived experiences to raising issues, offering solutions, acting as a sounding board and holding employers to account
    • The role of data, from helping employers to achieve their goals, to demonstrating what’s working, revealing barriers and defending claims
    • Other ways to embed an anti-racism policy, from induction processes and exit interviews, to reverse mentoring and enabling people to become allies
    • Complex legal issues, including those arising from “zero tolerance” policies, “banter”, harassment, indirect discrimination and positive discrimination

Our news update covers fire and rehire practices and the rights of agency staff.

    Diversity in the built environment

    Diversity in the built environment

The diversity of an industry is a key consideration when deciding what kind of career you wish to pursue. This plays a part in how welcoming you would judge a workplace. As it’s National Careers Week, we wanted to explore diversity in the built environment and, with the help of three leaders in this space, we look at the topic in more detail in this podcast. This podcast seeks to ascertain how diverse the built environment is, why diversity matters and what can be done to create a diverse professional pool in the sector, reflecting society more generally. The three guests on this podcast are Building People managing director, Teresa Scott OBE, DiverseCity Surveyors (DCS) founder and chair, Bola Abisogun OBE, and the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust (CSTT) CEO, Terry Watts, with UCEM PR and social media manager, Andrew Belt, asking the questions. Teresa founded award-winning employability specialist Kennedy Scott, which she led for 30 years. Teresa has expertise in diversity, inclusion and employability, working collaboratively with industry and the public sector to ensure better representation of local communities across the country. Last month, Teresa became managing director of Building People – a free-to-use platform that aggregates built environment careers activity, enabling people to find knowledge, vacancies, events and opportunities, and employers to engage with a more diverse range of talent. Bola is founder and chair of DiverseCity Surveyors – the first Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) network which offers quality support services and educational training to BAME surveyors who are members of the RICS irrespective of their physical location across world. Terry is CEO of the CSTT, which is an independent charity that supports young people who face barriers to entering the surveying profession.

    Episode #41 with Bamidele Farinre

"The thing about it, my journey to date, is that I always like to tell the story to encourage others in the sense that, achieving success, or, (let me) take it back: fulfilling your dream, your vision, it comes with a lot of obstacles, with trials, with stumbling blocks.  You have to make up your mind,  see where you are going...not that I'm saying that it's easy, or there won't be some points that you won't feel weak, but you just keep going. You can't afford to give up.  Along the way I have seen the impact of my experience, being able to tell it, I've been able to encourage others."

Continuing to celebrate International Womens' Month, I chat with Chief Biomedical Scientist and Virologist Bamidele Farinre about her career within the field of sciences so far.  Bami talks about how, against all the odds, she broke into her profession.  We chat about the vital role of biomedical sciences and discuss how being a BAME scientist encourages young women to consider the sciences, and why she is also a big advocate of STEM and The WISE Campaign.  We banter in Yorùbá, and compare our educational notes growing up in Nigeria.  Bami also demystifies the labs you see on TV  to what the reality is.  We also talk about whose blood she would very much like to analyse.  And of course, we talk about the quote that continually inspires her.

Bamidele is the Chief Biomedical Scientist for (DHSE -UKHSA Covid-19 Mobile Processing Units (MPUs) at the London Medical Lab (LML). She has been instrumental in leading, designing and implementing the June Almeida Lab based in the Franklin Wilkins Building, Waterloo London. This was a collaborative project between Kings College London and Viapath Analytics LLP. Using her knowledge and skills in molecular virology she has ensured that good laboratory processes and training were implemented throughout this project.   Bamidele is a member of the IBMS Virology Advisory Panel group. Who Is Sowing Into Your Garden Sis?

I have as many can relate, struggled with centering myself.  This has often resulted in not celebrating my wins and then becoming uncomfortable in centering myself.  We are never taught to recognise and celebrate our wins because we are preoccupied with the wounds we have endured on the journey.

    Under Construction

We are all UNDER-CONSTRUCTION learning and growing through and from our experiences. As we build and grow in character we cannot overlook how we have all been conditioned as Black Women often allowing the constructs of the workplace to use fear to oppress us. As we break through the fear and find our voices our fellow Black sister found her voice following her dilemma on last week's episode 'DILEMMA: Toya Talks I need your help. Less than 6 months after my performance review, my role has been advertised.' - She took the draft marked-up grievance complaint and showed up for herself....

    Whistle Blower - Pt1

In this episode, we discuss how to use your Burn Folder. Last week Dominic Cummings answering questions in front of a Select committee voluntarily became a whistleblower. He answered every question and sprinkled some of the contents of his burn folder. In doing so he set the tone of single-handedly detailing the inner workings of a sitting government and the mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Cumminings understood how to navigate to avoid being the future scapegoat for a possible future inquiry into the handling of the covid pandemic.  A former government strategist and chief to staff challenging the decision-making that has cost thousands of lives. In this episode, we discuss his character, credibility, and how he built and used his burn folder in covering himself against his former employer Boris Johnson the current Prime Minister of the UK.

    To Be Evenly Yoked

    To Be Evenly Yoked

My Black Sisters, grab your helmets of salvation because it's time we speak candidly and honestly about how we navigate dating. Dear Black Women heterosexual, Gay, and Non-Binary in teaching, guiding, and advising you how to navigate work .... and life we need to use some of those transferable skills, tools, and learnings in the dating scene. Kevin Samuels is going up and down telling us about these so-called 'high-value men' meanwhile Mr Samuels is not speaking from the pulpit of high value.

Many of us hide behind our careers to avoid confronting the often uncomfortable topic of dating primarily because some of us do not know how to date and in turn end up with men/women we are not evenly yoked with. I always advise and encourage you to approach your careers as a project with clear objectives and a strategy.  Dating is a project too,  so le et's talk strategy!

In this episode, I discuss the themes in Blue Therapy. We work so hard and have to adapt how we navigate work to attain success but how do we navigate relationships and balance this with our working life?
