276 - Robert MF'n Smalls and Year End Recap

276 - Robert MF'n Smalls and Year End Recap

Robert Smalls! He was born a slave in Beaufort, South Carolina  in 1839. Then he'd pull off a daring sea-faring escape to the Union during the Civil War, then become the first black captain for the Union, then becoming a member of the US House of Representatives. He would die in the house he was born in - his former slave master's - a house he bought after the Civil War. His story is one of perseverance and grit - of refusing to quit no mater how the odds are stacked against you. After his story, I share my current state of mind as I reflect back on the kind of year 2021 was, and then look forward to 2022. Thanks for the ride, meatsacks!

    Hurricanes & COVID-19 Affect Seafood

Melvin Dunn, 41, is a shrimper in Beaufort, North Carolina. Dunn lost a shrimp season with Hurricane Dorian last September and now faces further impacts from COVID-19 on the seafood industry. Dunn is from the South River – a predominantly black coastal community in Beaufort, NC. With increasingly intense hurricanes affecting his catch, Dunn decided to transition to a seafood truck delivery service after Hurricane Dorian last September. Now COVID-19 might change that.

Broadcast from the Shoresides' studio, this series compiles community stories about COVID-19 from coastal North Carolina.

Todd Willis grew up as a pirate.  Or at least that's what his mom told him.  And he took it to heart.  Now he's a re-enactor and leader of the popular east coast pirate entertainment group The Loose Cannon Company.

We talk about how he got there, how he wrangles a disparate group of pirates into a cohesive whole, and how to raise your kids as responsible pirates when you're dressing them up as criminals.

Penn Center Director Mike Campi shares his vision for the historic facility.

CityTrex.com is producing a series of podcasts and virtual tours - MP3 audio walking tours for onsite interpretation, and GPS apps for driving tours for a day trip into the undeveloped barrier islands of the Sea Island Lowcountry.

Penn Center shows much of the core of this exploration. Agrarian life of people in rural Southern USA, not just country living but island life with an added obstacle of slavery, post-slavery, and circumstances of limited exposure to any opportunity.

So… life was still made good by living right, being clever, and keeping on.

Thanks to the Friends of Hunting Island for their vision to capture these real stories of the Sea Island Lowcountry in local voices.
