Building a honey farm business with innovative marketing, agritourism and education with Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey

Building a honey farm business with innovative marketing, agritourism and education with Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey

Just your typical CIA to honey farmer story on this podcast! Tara Chapman of Two Hives Honey talks with host Katie Kulla  about starting and scaling a honey business, with education and agritourism as important parts of the plan. After a decade of working for The Agency, Tara quit her government job to work for a beekeeper in East Texas, and was inspired to start her own unique honey business.

Two Hives Honey sells raw honey direct to consumers through its online store and a monthly subscription program. They also offer multiple education opportunities through on-site honey tasting, tours, and beekeeper classes. In addition to an interesting story, we learn a lot along the way about pitching an ag business in a tech world, operating a lean business and scaling up only as needed, and incorporating education and agritourism into a farm business model.

Tara also has a lot of insight to share with our listeners on how she built a business out of honey and beekeeping through an innovative combination of farming and marketing. Two Hives Honey has quickly evolved and has grown into a socially conscious business and team that aims to educate their community, provide unique honey and bee experiences, and share why real, raw honey is the best honey!

Buzzing with Passion: A Deep Dive into Bee Conservation

Buzzing with Passion: A Deep Dive into Bee Conservation

I invite you on a journey through the life of a man whose love for bees extends far beyond the norm. Henry "Hank" Sveck, a veteran real estate investor turned clinical psychologist, is now dedicating his life to an entirely different realm - the fascinating world of honeybees and their conservation. We begin our exploration with the centuries-old tale of Hank's family farm, which has evolved from a bustling commercial orchard into a sanctuary for these enchanting insects.

We delve into the incredible biological adaptations that equip bees to survive harsh winter conditions, and Hank shares the surprisingly complex social structures within a hive. In an intriguing segment, we discuss the delicate balance between intervening in nature and letting it chart its own course, highlighting the surprising benefits of so-called "aggressive" bees. Our conversation then takes us to the shores of Nova Scotia, where an upcoming ecosystem restoration project promises a beacon of hope.

Wrapping up, we shift our focus to practical ways we can contribute to bee conservation, from transforming our backyards into miniature meadows, to supporting initiatives that combine tourism with environmental preservation. Hank's passion for bees goes beyond their ecological importance, touching on their therapeutic potential for people suffering from PTSD, and the profound spiritual connections they can induce. It's a conversation that underscores the importance of continuous learning, respect for all beings, and the power of the smallest actions to make a difference.

Season 2, Episode #43~Blind Hog and Acorn Go Out on the Town!

Season 2, Episode #43~Blind Hog and Acorn Go Out on the Town!

Hard-workin' farmers do get to go to town and have fun every now and then, right?

After mucking about with the walnuts, tending the livestock, feeding the new kitties, Blind Hog and Acorn headed to the Big City to see David Sedaris, live and in person.  3 Words?  "It was awesome!"  Acorn picked up a copy of his latest book, "A Carnival of Snackery" and had him sign it.  He did so while asking questions "Did you grow up on a farm?  Have you ever eaten horse?"

Even snagged a pint at a local micro-brewery beforehand. Like a real "date night!"

Acorn has future outings planned that involve new theatrical releases...  Dune, The French Dispatch...

A section of piss-poor fencing got replaced. Always fencing work to be done.

Rain has been falling, 6.07" for the month so far!  Hot damn and pass them cookies!

Season 2, Episode #21~ Goosie Hut is Built!

Season 2, Episode #21~ Goosie Hut is Built!

Blind Hog and Acorn have been busy- the goslings are growing too damn fast and they needed their own pen. It took a couple days, but as we speak, they are enjoying green grass and fresh air, and no competition with the nine chicken peeps!

Blackberry juice was made and jarred up- is very delicious. 18 or so quarts!

Garden still not set out 100%, hopefully Acorn will remedy that this week. Finally will get 2 days without rain.

Big Bee Questions are "will the two hive splits "take?" and did we make it to the semi-finals of the honey judging competition???

Episode #24~ Acorn's Rant and Trying to Find Your Happy Place

Episode #24~ Acorn's Rant and Trying to Find Your Happy Place

Acorn has been busy cleaning the house after RAIN finally fell from the sky.  She also goes on a bit of a rant- wondering why folks just won't wear masks. So frustrating.

Blind Hog has his work "cut out for him " (pun intended) as a dead tree fell across the driveway, and thus he will get another cord or two added to the winter's stash of firewood.

There is a 505/50 chance of podcast next week- depends if we can avoid contracting the Covid as poll workers on election day, plus Blind Hog's birthday will be coming up.

Sunset was beautiful this last night of October.  House is getting cleaned-0 with or without Sam's help, the bees are fed and the geese are happy.  As are we all.  See pictures under the EPISODES tab at https://www.blindhogandacorn.com

Episode #20~ A Week in Review

Episode #20~ A Week in Review

Blind Hog and Acorn sit on the porch while Sam has his supper and discuss the past week's work.  Acorn is not sure how many goat kids are running about, and Blind Hog was reminded to check the almanac before digging- the phases of the moon specifically!

Acorn also "virtually attended" a Podcasting Masterclass Workshop and learned some really cool things, some of which will help future Blind Hog and Acorn episodes #haveaplan.  Some times you cannot see the forest for the trees, and Acorn does want to stay focused.  Don't we all?

Episode #19~ Work the Hives with the Acorn

Episode #19~ Work the Hives with the Acorn

Come out to the apiary with the Acorn and go through the four hives.  You will be safe, no bee suit required HOWEVER if the incessant buzzing of bees will give you the willies, then you might want to skip this episode!

Acorn went through all four hives and found a few interesting things.  You will learn a fun fact about what bees do when they are smoked and how the Acorn will feed them sugar.  We do have a drought going on, after all...

No pictures from this episode- could not record and take pictures at the same time!  Acorn tried, will have to work on that for next time.

Episode #13~ Fun Facts, Goat-911 and Classical Art Memes...

Episode #13~ Fun Facts, Goat-911 and Classical Art Memes...

The heat of summer continues, as does the workings of the pressure canner.  Blind Hog and Acorn just keep truckin'.

Spices arrive, goats depart- but not without a little drama first. Of course, we must have the drama.  Acorn shares fun animal facts, probably more than what you would like to know. Cannot say we didn't warn you.  Astrophotography is harder than it looks.  Art museums are always more fun with a smart ass, or two.  Or three.

Check out the website for pictures for the episode! www.blindhogandacorn.com

    Episode #9~ Bread and Honey

    Episode #9~ Bread and Honey

Acorn wants you to bake your own bread- sourdough bread to be exact!  Think of it as a grand science experiment.  It is really easy, as she will explain. And if sourdough bread isn't enough to get you cooking, maybe the thought of waffles and fresh-baked cookies will.

Acorn will also talk about bees and honey extraction- bee warned- this episode is filled with "fun facts."

On the website, www.blindhogandacorn.com, there are loads of pictures for this episode, Blind Hog and Acorn must have had some spare time...  Enjoy!
