#379: The ABCs of Community: Part 4 - An Isolated Soul

#379: The ABCs of Community: Part 4 - An Isolated Soul

Today on the podcast, we are finishing our series called the ABCs of community. We have talked about availability, belonging, and consistency. In this episode, we are discussing the flip side of the coin -- isolation. People are sometimes in the proximity of other people, but they still feel isolated because their soul is hurting. Today, we are receiving God's healing power for our souls and recognizing it's never too late to say yes to community.

    Key Highlights of the Episode:

    — Some people are with other people, but their soul hurts

    — When we don't do life with other people, there are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual effects

    — It's never too late to build community

    — God desires us to be in relationship with others and to help each other

    — Be a person who can both ask for help and offer help

    — People need safe spaces where they can ask for help

—It is not wise to isolate yourself because we were created for relationships

    — Be open for God to use you to impact others

    — It's time to unite and build strong relationships

    — Embrace a lifestyle of community

    — Say yes to community

RS S3E9 - You ARE The Circle
Belonging is central to our existence and it can be difficult at any age. Tammy shares her experience and the new perspective she's received.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It's Lisa and Tammy from Riding Sidesaddle where we talk about all things women - from periods, to menopause, to who am I, to who the F@#$ is going to clean the bathroom, and everything in between!
Lisa and Tammy are cousins who love to talk and laugh and dig a little deeper. We regularly bring on guests who offer additional experience and perspectives and a little extra spice!

Retreating From the Center of Things

Retreating From the Center of Things

“To incorporate the sense of oneself as part of a complex web of mutual dependence is to become more humble. At the same time, this humility enhances one’s ability to form bonds with others. In short, retreating from the center of things – both in reality and in one’s self-conception – is inseparable from forging connections that expand the boundaries of one’s self.” –Sarah Buss

In today’s episode I thread together what we’ve heard and learned from Jayne and Renee, along with some things I’ve learned from books on my bookshelf, and distill that into a few key ways to think and behave with a focus on inclusion, building trust, leaving space for other’s agency, and reducing harm.

I focus on how to move from humility and decentering ourselves, which Jayne and Renee advocate for, to action. I draw on ideas from Inclusion Uncomplicated, by Nika White; DEI Deconstructed, by Lily Zheng; White Feminism, by Koa Beck; and Radical Humility, a collection of essays edited by Rebekah Modrak and Jame Vander Broek.

Know Your Worth with Monique Kelley

Know Your Worth with Monique Kelley

How would you feel if someone discriminated in public and no one came to your rescue? Would you have the courage to stand up for yourself?

In this episode of Born on 3rd podcast, I have the privilege of hosting the amazing Monique Kelley. She recently became an associate professor at Boston University's College of Communication. She's the faculty advisor for the university's award-winning Public Relations Student Society of America chapter. She's also an entrepreneur, the founder of Monique Kelley Consulting, and a founding member of the Women's executive organization called chief.

Monique grew up in New Jersey with her Iranian mom and Black dad from Trenton. Growing up, Monique had room to be independent and autonomous. Monique is a strong believer that you are what you tell yourself. Growing up, she challenged herself to do many things, especially in sports, even when she knew it wasn't her stronghold.

In this episode, we dig deeper into understanding how we can have intentional diversity and inclusion.

    Key Takeaways from the Episode:

    • Inaction is inexcusable: If you see or hear something racist, sexist, homophobic, or offensive, you must act. Being silent by the standard is signaling your approval.
    • Putting fancy inclusive words up on a sign or painting them on the wall in an office to put them in an employee handbook does not make an organization inclusive.
    • Take time to learn about other people's cultures. It will help you understand them better.

    Quotes from the Episode:

"I'm a strong believer in you are what you tell your mind."- Monique Kelley

"Belonging is accepting people for who they are."- Tim

"Stop focusing so much on what you don't have and focus on what you do have and how you can add value."- Monique

"Any negative energy or negative experience that I have, I'd like just to flip it on its head and use it as fuel."- Monique

Part 1: Promoting the health and wellbeing of black women through knowledge exchange.
We turn to the health and well-being of Black women as we commemorate Black History Month and the 2022 theme, which emphasizes the need for Black Health and Wellness. The ability to develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of one's own mind and the body relies heavily on self-awareness. In order to improve the health of black women, it is critical that they have access to information about health and illness prevention. Melanie Richards, the founder of B-Visible, joins us on the show today. We'll discuss topics affecting the health and well-being of black women through knowledge exchange. We'll hear Melanie's experience and gain some ideas on how to live a healthy lifestyle while being present and balanced in life. Being physically healthy isn't the only thing that matters. Having a strong mind and a solid emotional state is also required.

There is no doubt in our minds that black women are strong and deserving of the best care.
