Nehemiah is called by God to rebuild the walls and gates of Jerusalem but in doing so issues arise and the opposition continues. It has been said that if “Satan can’t destroy you, he’ll distract you” and Nehemiah’s opposition starts working overtime as they work to finish the wall.

Today we will read about conflict that comes from within and how Nehemiah navigates the issues, modeling for us the beauty of walking in both compassion and conviction.

Nehemiah is called by God to rebuild the walls and gates of Jerusalem and today we see how God uses an “ordinary” cupbearer to do an extraordinary work. Even though Nehemiah 3 seems like an odd chapter to study due to all 31 verses being a historical list of the work Israel did to rebuild the walls, we see that there are a number of lessons we can glean from passages like this.

Today we will look at the historical background to the events of Nehemiah and read through the first chapter where Nehemiah not only hears about the broken walls and gates of Jerusalem but also the way sin has wrecked their nation. In the same way, we have grown numb to our own sin and the destruction it creates in our own lives and God is calling us to take the same steps as Israel: repent.

There’s an old expression that says “your reputation precedes you”. When you have a good reputation that’s great news. But what happens when your reputation and past are not great? We wish people would just forget our failures, mistakes and sins. In Rahab’s story we see that God doesn’t want to gloss over our reputation – He wants to redeem it.

While the vast majority of people and history struggle with the divinity of Jesus, there are also a large number of people who find it equally hard to understand His humanity. For some, they focus purely on His humanity and make Him too human (marginalizing His divinity) while others focus solely on His divinity and marginalize or ignore or alter His humanity. But Jesus was 100% man and 100% God and today we look at why His humanity actually matters.
