Bahrain is home to 376 financial institutions and the second largest Islamic finance hub after Malaysia, with over $31.4 billion in assets under management. Aluminum manufacturing accounts for the bulk of Bahrain’s manufacturing sector, and contributes 12 percent of GDP. Aluminum Bahrain (ALBA), the state-owned aluminum smelter, recently became the largest single-site aluminum smelter outside of China with the November 2019 inauguration of its expansion." US-Cuba Bilateral Relations Under the Biden Administration

    US-Cuba Bilateral Relations Under the Biden Administration
    With the Biden Administration there is the growing prospect of a potential reversal of sanctions and regulations imposed by the Trump Administration that resulted in restricting travel, investment and remittances. At the same time, President Biden faces a challenging political landscape with Cuba as human rights abuses continue to be a serious problem in the country, its intelligence service continues to support Venezuela’s autocratic leader Nicolas Maduro, and unanswered questions about the strange brain trauma injuries experienced by U.S. diplomats and their families in Cuba linger. Additionally, pressure from the American Cuban community against a possible détente between Washington and Havana remains, adding a domestic political dimension. The recent San Isidro Movement led by Cuba’s artistic community provides hope that a new re-set in U.S-Cuba relations could lead to social and political changes on the island that would otherwise not be possible if current sanctions remain. Panelists: Richard Feinberg, UC San Diego; Michael Bustamante, Florida International University; Javier Corrales, Amherst College; Ted Henken, Baruch College, CUNY; William LeoGrande, American University. Moderator: Margaret Crahan, Colombia University. Series: "Hemisphere in Transition" [Public Affairs] [Show ID: 36855]

    How to deal with China? – with Ardi Bouwers

    How to deal with China? – with Ardi Bouwers

    For decades, the European Union and China have eyed each other from a distance. Both economic giants in their own right, they saw huge benefit in co-operating with each other, blending their different economic strengths in what appeared to be a win-win situation.

    More recently, however, China has been acting in increasingly threatening ways; and it is becoming ever clearer that the EU needs a coherent strategy for relations with Beijing. In the words of the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell: 'We only have a chance if we deal with China with collective discipline'

    In this episode, Will Murray speaks to Ardi Bouwers – a Sinologist and Director of the consultancy, China Circle, specialising in intercultural communication and media. They discuss:

    • the EU-China relationship and differences in values;
    • how the Chinese Communist Leadership perceives Europe;
    • bilateral relations between China and EU member-states;
    • why a collective EU strategy on China could benefit Europe; and
    • in which areas a positive agenda with China can be constructed.

    Ep. 28: Article 370: The history and future of Kashmir

    In this episode, we're joined by Dr Andrew Whitehead to frame the debate over Article 370's abrogation in the context of Kashmir's complicated history. We look at the circumstances of Kashmir's entry into the Indian Union and why the provision exists as it does. At the same time, the reactions around the repeal of Article 370 and the downgrading of J&K to a Union Territory has already elicited a range of reactions in India and elsewhere. We end this episode with a look at what lies ahead for the region

    US-China Trade – Gordon Hanson & Charlene Barshefsky

    US-China Trade – Gordon Hanson & Charlene Barshefsky

    Gordon Hanson and Charlene Barshefsky discuss China’s commitments and market reforms since joining the WTO and the path ahead in the trade relationship between the world’s two biggest economies. They explore the policy and enforcement tools the US has to confront China over the imbalance and lack of reciprocity, and the immediate political pressure on US policy makers to address the loss of jobs due to trade.

    Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky served as the US Trade Representative from 1997 to 2001, she was responsible for the negotiation of hundreds of complex market access, regulatory and investment agreements with virtually every major country in the world. She is best known internationally as the architect and chief negotiator of China's historic World Trade Organization Agreement. She is currently WilmerHale's Senior International Partner, where she continues her legal career in international litigation, commercial negotiations, investment and regulatory advice, and dispute resolution.

    Dr. Gordon Hanson is the Acting Dean and Pacific Economic Cooperation Chair in International Economic Relations at the School of Global Policy & Strategy at UC San Diego, where he also directs the Center on Global Transformation. Dr. Hanson specializes in the economics of international trade, international migration and foreign direct investment. His recent research project on the effect of China’s rise on US workers, firms and markets spurred a wide discussion on US trade policy at the height of 2016 US presidential elections that is still being debated.
