Ashley Grant 2 / Fight Club

Ashley Grant 2 / Fight Club

Rule-breakers unite! This week, we're going to be talking lots and lots of Fight Club. Director David Fincher's 1999 film didn't exactly set the world on fire during its theatrical run but has emerged as one of that year's most-talked-about releases ever since. Featuring Edward Norton as the unnamed narrator, Brad Pitt as the wily Tyler Durden and Helena Bonham Carter as the woman who gets between them, this adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel is both darkly hilarious and harrowing in equal measure.

Writer, photographer and social media influencer The Famous Ashley Grant returns to the show to help us break down this insanely quotable film. We'll discuss what it has to say about corporate America, reveal how we feel about its cynical take on our consumer culture and explore whether or not the film is — actually — a love story?

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Fight Club.

    SYNOPSIS

A depressed man (Edward Norton) suffering from insomnia meets a strange soap salesman named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and soon finds himself living in his squalid house after his perfect apartment is destroyed. The two bored men form an underground club with strict rules and fight other men who are fed up with their mundane lives. Their perfect partnership frays when Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), a fellow support group crasher, attracts Tyler's attention.

S1 Ep 5: Tommy Lee sends a message to John Bonham beyond the grave and discusses his accordion playing

Anthony sits down with his dear friend, iconic hard rock drummer Tommy Lee, to discuss Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, how John Bonham changed his life and playing "Smoke on the Water" on accordion. They sample two wines, a 2017 La Dame Rousee by Domaine de la Mordoree and 2015 Vino Di Sasso Robola de Celaphonie while reminiscing on the year they spent living together while writing Lee's New York Times Bestselling autobiography, Tommyland.

Wine expert Kyle Meyer would rather listen to Led Zeppelin IV.

    23: Carmine Appice

    23: Carmine Appice

Carmine Appice is a legend when it comes to drumming.  AS Rick Van Horn said in Modern Drummer magazine (1999) "Carmine Appice set the foundation for heavy drumming ... before Bonham, before Ian Paice... before anyone else."  He's played with a wide range of bands from Vanilla Fudge, Blue Murder, Rod Stewart, King Kobra, Ozzy Osbourne, Paul Stanley, Ted Nugent, Cactus, and Rod Stewart to name a few.  He even performed on Pink Floyd's "Dogs of War."

He's currently celebrating the reissue of "Carmine Appice's Guitar Zeus" which, released last month, features his '95 and '97 installments of the album and pairs them with five new tracks, yielding a 33 song non-stop who's who of guitar wizardry.

Also this year is the 40th anniversary of the Rod Stewart album Blondes Have More Fun on which Carmine played, sang backing vocals and co-wrote the smash hit "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy." Carmine also co-wrote 1981's "Young Turks from Rod's Tonight I'm Yours album.

Carmine has written several books throughout his career from instructional to biographical.  In "Stick It.  My Life of Sex, Drums, and Rock 'n' Roll" he talks about how hung with Hendrix, trashed hotel rooms, and taught John Bonham (as well as Fred Astaire) a thing or two about drumming (along with some more colorful memories).

    Episode 34: Ocean's 8

    Episode 34: Ocean's 8

This week Lise and Andi lose their collective minds over the movie Ocean’s 8 because: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rhianna, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, and Anne Hathaway. Also, they both LUUUUV a good heist, and Ocean’s 8 delivers AND passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors.

The writing is tight (SO important in a heist plot!), the woman power is stellar, the humor is spot-on, and holy crap the chemistry between the cast and especially Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett…Andi is shipping them hard. Ocean’s 8 is part of the Ocean’s franchise, and Bullock’s character is Debbie Ocean, sister of Danny Ocean.

    Plot summary:

“Five years, eight months, 12 days and counting -- that's how long Debbie Ocean [Bullock] has been devising the biggest heist of her life. She knows what it's going to take -- a team of the best people in the field, starting with her partner-in-crime Lou Miller [Blanchett]. Together, they recruit a crew of specialists, including jeweler Amita [Kaling], street con Constance [Awkwafina], suburban mom Tammy [Paulson], hacker Nine Ball [Rihanna], and fashion designer Rose [Bonham Carter]. Their target -- a necklace that's worth more than $150 million.”

Ocean's 8, Toxic Fandom and the Battle for Diversity in Film

Ocean's 8, Toxic Fandom and the Battle for Diversity in Film

In Episode 81 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Kai Yaniz tie up some loose Riverdale ends with their brief review of the 2001 cult comedy Josie and the Pussycats, based on the Archie Comics title. Then it's into more serious matters, as they address the disparity in the audience and critical response to women and POC in studio films. From Ocean's 8 to Ghostbusters, female-led releases in particular have proved divisive among some moviegoers. In fact, actresses like Ghostbusters' Leslie Jones and Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Kelly Marie Tran have personally been the subject of online harassment and assorted vitriol.

So let's dig into one of Hollywood's most common criticisms nowadays, namely its stubbornness to accept diversity both onscreen and behind the scenes. Recent films like Wonder Woman and Black Panther have demonstrated strides forward, but there's still much progress to be made. Listen in as we chat about how we can all move forward together.

Ocean's 8 synopsis courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Five years, eight months, 12 days...and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock)—just released from prison—has been concocting the greatest heist of her storied career.

She knows what it’s going to take—a team of the best in their field, starting with her former partner-in-crime Lou (Cate Blanchett). Together, they recruit a crew of specialists: jeweler Amita (Kaling); street con Constance (Awkwafina); expert fence Tammy (Paulson); hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna); and fashion designer Rose Weil (Bonham Carter).

The target is $150 million in diamonds—diamonds that will adorn the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger (Hathaway), who will be center stage at the event of the year, the Met Gala.

Their plan appears rock solid, but it will need to be flawless if the team is to get in and get away—all in plain sight.

“Ocean’s 8” also stars Richard Armitage as Claude Becker, Kluger’s unwitting date at the Gala, and James Corden as John Frazier, an insurance investigator trying to put the pieces together.

Gary Ross (“Seabiscuit,” “The Hunger Games,” “Pleasantville”) directed “Ocean’s 8” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Olivia Milch, original story by Ross. Steven Soderbergh and Susan Ekins produced the film. Michael Tadross, Diana Alvarez, Jesse Ehrman and Bruce Berman served as executive producers, with Milch co-producing.

    Episode 12 - Jenny Bonham-Carter - Interfaith Part 2

Jenny Bonham-Carter, A Social Worker, Musician, Interfaith Practitioner -  our discussion on Interfaith.

My first experience of interfaith work started about five and a half years ago. I was then in the middle of doing my masters degree in human rights at the university of Uppsala in Sweden and I was planning for the semester of field work. I did this with a youth interfaith organization in Sweden called ”Together for Sweden” and when the field work semester was over I stayed involved and partly employed in the project pretty much until we moved from Sweden to the US last spring.

I wrote my thesis on interfaith work and the connection with human rights, this was also an evaluation of the project. Parts of my thesis was later used in a book on interfaith workshop methods etc published by the project. The main activity of Together for Sweden is to bring youth of different religions together, to offer them a leadership training (storytelling is also part of it) and give workshops in schools and a few other places. I was involved in this training, the workshops, helping organizing conferences and other activities. I was responsible for music during the interfaith services we had regularly over a year (I’m a part-time musician, while my bread and adult training has always been social work – mainly Children and families assessment Work for social services but I’ve also worked with development aid in west Africa, mental Health etc.).

Through Together for Sweden I became member of the interfaith council for Peace in Stockholm whose main purpose was to organize the UN initiated Interfaith harmony week.

    Fight Club

    Fight Club

The 85th drop in the Next 100 Project bucket burrows into the schizophrenic world of Fight Club. Not a hit in 1999 yet absolutely worshipped now, the Fincher/Pitt/Norton satire (it is a satire, right?) has more angles than a roomful of triangles. It’s also got Helena Bonham Carter swiping the whole movie away from the 2 macho leads. Also, there’s plenty of soap and terrorism! Rich tapestry here. Like coffee? Phil Hurley (Singer, songwriter & guitarist, The South Austin Moonlighters)
Phil Hurley sits down with me to review his journey from upstate New York to Austin, Texas. He tells me how he started playing music, about his band Gigolo Aunts and his time in Boston, Seattle, Amsterdam and Los Angeles. He recounts his time playing with Tracy Bonham, recalls the power that MTV used to have, his time working at Westwood Music in LA and how he helped form the band Stonehoney. He describes how he views the role of a guitar player, how he’s learning to write happy songs and what sets Austin aside from all the other cities where he’s lived.

Ep.64 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) Vs. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Ep.64 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) Vs. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (2005)

With yet another remake in the planning Invasion of the Remake decided to go back in time to compare and contrast the two films based on the Roald Dahl novel. Willy Wonka and the Chocalate Factory (1971) starring Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson, and Peter Ostrum is now considered a childhood favorite by many given the benefit of time, but wasn't a big success in the box office. Thirty-four years later director Tim Burton brought his vision of the classic novel to the silver screen in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) with Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, Helena Bonham Carter, and Deep Roy to mixed reviews but a massive box office. Our very own Invasion hosts have divided opinions, but they all agree that Willy Wonka must pay for his murderous intentions. Is Willy Wonka a childhood favorite or a child murderer? Download this week's episode to find out.
