Mu Qing has a cursed shackle because he refused to help Jun Wu, but Feng Xin and Hua Cheng think he’s still suspicious. Mu Qing ends up hanging from the edge of a lava cliff, but when he asks Xie Lian for help, he accidentally reminds him of the time in the past where Mu Qing had abandoned Xie Lian. He thinks that Xie Lian will abandon him too, but to his shock, Xie Lian jumps down the cliff to rescue him from falling. But unexpectedly, White No Face appears to push Xie Lian down the cliff. Mu Qing accidentally falls with him, while Hua Cheng jumps down after them.

Jun Wu tries to tempt Pei Ming, Lan QianQiu, and Xie Lian into breaking the human array in the royal capital. But no one takes Jun Wu’s offer so he sets the entire heavenly capital on fire. Hua Cheng appears and temporarily stops Jun Wu so that they can free the other rapped heavenly officials. Hua Cheng then brings up Xie Lian’s giant divine statue using prayer lanterns and silver butterflies so that everyone can jump onto it to escape the burning heavens. Xie Lian directs the statue to fly away, but Jun Wu turns the heavenly capital into a fiery flying fortress and chases after them. They end up in Black Water’s domain to fight.

We learn the background of JW through the guoshi. JW tried to save the kingdom of Wu Yong from a volcano eruption, but failed and caused a million people to fall to their deaths. Driven into depression, he suggests using human sacrifices to stop the volcano. His friends disagree with him, so he kills them and ends up cursed by their resentful spirits. The guoshi runs away, but later is reunited when JW becomes the emperor of the heavens. But the guoshi finds out that JW’s ascension story is a lie, and he has murdered all the previous gods in order to become the emperor, using his hatred to create vicious ghosts and monsters to terrorize the people.

Jun Wu offers to give Yin Yu Quan Yizhen’s spiritual powers in exchange for his loyalty. Yin Yu pretends to make a deal with Jun Wu, and uses Quan Yizhen’s powers to seal Jun Wu in a spiritual circle. But Jun Wu easily breaks the circle and sucks Yin Yu’s soul and blood through his cursed shackle. Yin Yu is on his death bed, feeling guilty for hating Quan Yizhen. Xie Lian chases after Jun Wu to get the cursed shackle, but he is defeated by him and forced to behave when the Rain Master visits. But Hua Cheng has snuck in with the rain master and helps Xie Lian escape his palace. They run into the fetus spirit and Jian Lan, who unleashes her pent up anger at Feng Xin.

Jun Wu is revealed to be White No Face, and he defeats and imprisons all the heavenly officials of the upper court. Xie Lian is able to contact Hua Cheng through Shi Qingxuan and the soul shifting spell. Yin Yu finds him and together they try to dig under the palaces to gather all the gods, but Jun Wu finds out and captures Yin Yu and Xie Lian. When Xie Lian regains consciousness he finds himself tied to a chair by Ruoye, and Yin Yu and Quan Yizhen are seen in the next room through a mirror. Jun Wu patronizes Xie Lian for trying to escape.

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng gather people to make an array against the evil spirits in the royal capital. They run into Heaven’s Eye, and Shi Qingxuan, who is now a mortal beggar. The group of cultivators and beggars work together to lure all the evil spirits so that Hua Cheng and Xie Lian can disperse them one by one. But suddenly they realize a stranger snuck in, and it turns out to be Xie Lian’s guoshi, Mei Nian Qing! Jun Wu appears to apprehend Mei Nian Qing back to heaven. Xie Lian kisses Hua Cheng goodbye and returns to heaven to report the situation.

Xie Lian picks up the other heavenly officials in a giant statue, but the resentful spirits and lava are quickly catching up to him. The martial gods transform into a giant sword so Xie Lian can fight against the spirits, but he’s running out of spiritual energy. Thankfully, Jun Wu arrives to help them dissipate some of the spirits. White no face gathers the remaining spirits and sends them to all the major cities to unleash the human face disease. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng decide to go to the capital city since it will be the most populated and difficult to deal with. In the city, Xie Lian calls Jun Wu in the communication array and they discuss the suspicious guoshi.

Xie Lian calls out for Hua Cheng once he’s broken through, and Hua Cheng immediately appears, hugging him from behind.

Finally on the third day, a young man trips over him and curses at him, but then later returns to help him up and gives him a bamboo hat to shield him from the rain. This one act of kindness gives Xie Lian hope, and the energy to fight back against White No Face

White No Face lures 100 lost travelers into stabbing Xie Lian. Hua Cheng, in the form of a ghost fire, explodes from anguish and kills everyone, turning into a savage ghost. Two months later, Xie Lian regains his body and he travels back to his family. Feng Xin finds him and they get into an argument when he realizes that Xie Lian’s personality has changed. Feng Xin leaves. Soon after, Xie Lian’s parents commit suicide, to ease his burden. Xie Lian falls into despair and turns into White No Face, planning to unleash the human face disease on the Yong'An citizens. As he gathers resentful spirits for the curse, a voice calls out to him “your highness”.

Xie Lian attempts to steal from a mortal, but is caught by a group of junior officials. He runs back home ashamed. When he later goes to a mountain to do secluded cultivation training, he unluckily runs into the same group of junior officials. They try to bully him, but Xie Lian fights back, until suddenly Mu Qing arrives and takes the junior officials’ side. Angry and shamed, Xie Lian leaves the mountain and runs into the White Clothed Calamity. Instead of killing him, the white clothed calamity hugs and comforts Xie Lian. Xie Lian resists him, but loses their fight and returns home injured. Mu Qing is there and reveals to Feng Xin that Xie Lian robbed, causing Xie Lian to go crazy and chase Mu Qing out. He hides in his room until he calms down, but when he looks in a mirror, he is wearing white no face’s mask.

Xie Lian and his family are fugitives in hiding after xian le loses the war against yong’an. However, he now has a mortal body due to the curse shackle and is struggling to earn money to support himself and his parents. Things get worse when Mu Qing decides to leave them in order to help his own mother. On top of that, Xie Lian’s father is sick and needs expensive medicine to stay alive. Xie Lian has to resort to busking in order to earn money, but he’s forced to stop when another busking troupe resorts to desperate measures to reclaim their busking turf. They are finally out of all options and down the their final packet of medicine for the king, so Xie Lian comes up with a desperate plan.

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are attacked by White No Face, but run away when they realize they can’t win. They free Mu Qing and Feng Xin, so that the two of them can escape and report the situation back to heaven. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng chase after White No Face, and find out that he has devoured the bandage ghost Lang Ying, who was a Yong’An citizen. White No Face escapes to the volcano kiln on Mount Tonglu, and Xie Lian and Hua cheng chase after him to prevent him from emerging as a more powerful supreme ghost. But when they jump inside, Xie Lian and White no face are the only ones inside the kiln. White no face’s true plan is revealed: which is to transform Xie Lian into a supreme ghost king. Cliffhanger into book 4, which is a flashback.
