Before The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Brad Bird directed the much beloved The Iron Giant. Set in 1957, just after the Sputnik satellite was launched, young Hogarth Hughes finds and befriends a giant robot man. Trying to keep a giant robot a secret is no small order, especially when a government agent comes knocking. The Iron Giant has developed a cult status and the guys discuss whether or not it holds up. In 2004, director Brad Bird introduced us to the superhero family The Incredibles. Pixar's sixth film was an action movie blast! Featuring the voices of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson and Jason Lee, The Incredibles is set in a world where superheroes have gone underground. Itching to get back in the fight, Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) takes on a job from a mysterious woman that leads him to a mysterious foe from his past.

Les studios Disney sont le rouleau compresseur du cinéma hollywoodien, pourtant son parcours n'est pas jalonné que de blockbusters.
Dans ce nouvel épisode, nous nous attardons sur une sélection de quatre films récents qui ont été un échec au box-office, afin de décortiquer les raisons de leur insuccès. Nous nous demandons si dans cette sélection il n'y a pas à un ou deux films à réhabiliter.

Il gigante di ferro è un film del 1999, diretto da Brad Bird e prodotto dalla Warner Bros. Animation. È ambientato in una cittadina americana durante gli anni della Guerra Fredda (1957, dopo il lancio in orbita del satellite Sputnik da parte dell'Unione Sovietica), la cui serenità viene incrinata dall'arrivo di un gigante di ferro dallo spazio. Il protagonista è Hogarth Hughes, un bambino di 9 anni molto curioso, intraprendente e con una passione per i fumetti e la fantascienza. Nonostante sia un combinaguai, la sua vita è tutto sommato tranquilla, fin quando una sera salva il gigante di ferro, che era rimasto intrappolato tra i cavi dell'alta tensione. Pare che il gigante abbia perso la memoria al suo arrivo ed è quindi Hogarth a spiegargli il mondo circostante, dalla differenza tra un albero e una roccia fino a cosa sia l'anima. "Things die. That's part of life. It's bad to kill, but it's not bad to die." Sarà Kent Mansley, inviato dal governo per indagare sulla voci dell'arrivo del gigante, che darà del filo da torcere a Hogarth, il quale ha ben compreso quanto Mansley sia impietoso e che sia meglio celare l'esistenza del gigante. Infatti, nello scontro finale, Mansley non esita nel far lanciare un missile contro la città, pur di distruggere il gigante, che, mettendo in pratica gli insegnamenti di Hogarth, sceglie di fare del bene, opponendosi alla sua natura distruttrice.
Il gigante di ferro è il debutto registico di Brad Bird, che ciononostante mette già in campo in questo film tutte le peculiarità del suo linguaggio. L'uso dei movimenti di camera riesce a creare una forte dinamicità e a dare l'accento alle interazioni tra i personaggi. Brad Bird riesce a dare vita e anima non solo al gigante di ferro, ma all'intero film.
