Ep 41: Amy Dockser Marcus, Author of "We the Scientists" (part 2)

We the Scientists: How a Daring Team of Parents and Doctors Forged a New Path for Medicine

In Part 2 of the interview with Amy Dockser Marcus, Pulitzer Prize winning Wall Street Reporter and Author, she and host Meryl Comer discuss a rare disease often likened to Children’s Alzheimer’s.  The common thread is advancing the science with new pathways for treating disease and conducting research. Amy talks about if this new collaborative research model aimed at saving children would work for elderly populations with long-term chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s. In the process to accelerate new drug development, science may be forever changed.

Shelley Had Dissociative Identity Disorder. You Have Multiple Personalities.

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), a condition formerly referred to as multiple personality disorder, is very rare almost everywhere in the world except for one place: Hollywood. Not among actual people there but among characters in movies that are often very over the top. So while you and I might know people with depression or anxiety, the only reference we have for people with DID are fictional characters.

We change that today. Dr. Shelley Kolton is an OB/GYN in Manhattan and the author of the book Brain Storm: A Life in Pieces. She tells us about how she came to finally get diagnosed later in life and how the condition developed as a means of coping with childhood trauma.

We also talk with Dr. Richard Schwartz, a family therapist behind the notion of internal family systems (IFS). He argues that we all have multiple personalities inside us, even if we don’t dissociate when they are active. Listening to those voices and communicating with them about what they want and what they’re trying to tell you, he says, can be extremely beneficial to your mental health.

Visit Dr. Shelley Kolton's website at ShelleyKoltonMD.com. Get your copy of Brain Storm: A Life in Pieces wherever books are sold. Learn more about Dr. Richard Schwartz, his books, and Internal Family Systems by visiting the IFS website at ifs-institute.com

Mentorvention Minute-Brain Balm: Wrapping up our package of Brain Balm (Giant-Sized Episode)

Mentorvention Minute-Brain Balm: Wrapping up our package of Brain Balm (Giant-Sized Episode)

A giant-sized issue this week: One hundred seconds of your mentoring intervention. Welcome to the end of Season 1, our last episode, wrapping up our nine flavors of Brain Balm, creative ways to massage your message. We covered three categories of Brain Balm: The practical approach, aspirational ideas, and the silly path to producing progress.

These ideas are not meant to be mutually exclusive. In fact, there’s clearly overlap among many of the approaches we’ve shared. The point is in the outcome, in the deliverable, and a process that you can rely on to bring you to the promised land… that is, the landing that YOU promised to your team, your boss, your clients. Give your ideas, and your partner’s ideas, a chance to breathe and blossom.

Here are the nine flavors of Brain Balm:

    Practical Approaches:

    • Heal the Pain
    • The Toothbrush Test
    • Deeper Inside the Box

    Aspirational Approaches:

    • Stand on the Shoulders of Giants
    • What Would Midas Do?
    • The Blank of Blank

    Silly Approaches:

    • It’s Opposite Day!
    • Neapolitan
    • Let’s Go Crazy!

We’ll bring on Season Two on September 3, 2020 and help you break out of your comfort zone! Let me know what you think and share your own ideas: Dave@Mentorvention.com.

Here it comes, Let’s Go Crazy, part two. Snow melts along the edges. Change happens from the fringes. Different happens away from the normal. That’s where your crazy ideas come into play. Maybe someday your journey into the unknown, the unexpected will be seen by others as just the way things are done but for now, let’s go nuts together. Let me know what you think and share your own ideas: Dave@Mentorvention.com.

There’s too much here to keep stuffed inside one box, so our next flavor of Brain Balm, Neapolitan, takes up two episodes. Let’s take ideas that don’t go together… that should NOT go together… and put them together anyway! Let’s finish talking about Neapolitan, the second of our silly approaches to generating new ideas. Just like three flavors of ice cream that somehow ended up combined in the same carton, we can create something special by breaking down barriers that keep ideas apart. Mentorvention Minute: It's Opposite Day!

    Mentorvention Minute: It's Opposite Day!

Hold on tight, we are moving into the silly approaches to generating new ideas. Today is Opposite Day! If everybody is doing things the same way, your idea can truly stand out by going left when the world is going right, by zigging when the others are zagging. Build your ideas to defy the norm, to go against the grain, by being brave enough to go the other way.

This is the seventh of nine flavors of brain balm, brainstorming ideas to massage your message.

    • Heal the Pain
    • The Toothbrush Test

    Silly Approaches:

    •           It’s Opposite Day!

Wait a minute! If this is the seventh of nine, does that mean we’re almost done? No way! We’ll finish Brain Balm and then move along to a new set of Mentorvention Minutes. Let me know what you think and share your own ideas: Dave@Mentorvention.com.

Mentorvention Minute: The Blank of Blank

Mentorvention Minute: The Blank of Blank

We are unwrapping a set of aspirational approaches to brainstorming. This time, let’s fill in the Blank of Blank. Have you heard somebody called the Steve Jobs of X industry, or the Stephen King of a different genre? It’s like that, where a high-achiever in one field is used as a symbol of praise for someone in another field. For your ideas, why not move something that you’ve seen succeed into the situation you find yourself solving?

This is the sixth of nine flavors of brain balm, brainstorming ideas to massage your message.

    Practical Approaches:

    • Heal the Pain
    • The Toothbrush Test
    • Deeper Inside the Box

    Aspirational Approaches:

Mentorvention Minute: What Would Midas Do? part 2

Mentorvention Minute: What Would Midas Do? part 2

We are unwrapping a set of aspirational approaches to brainstorming. This time, we 'll finish What Would Midas Do? Now that you've come up with your Midas-sized ideas, what happens if reality forces you to scale back? Don’t let anything stop you. We’ll have plenty of time for reality checks… AFTER we come up with the great ideas.

This is the fifth flavor of brain balm, brainstorming ideas to massage your message.

    Practical Approaches:

    • Heal the Pain
    • The Toothbrush Test
    • Deeper Inside the Box

    Aspirational Approaches:

    • Stand on the Shoulders of Giants
    • What Would Midas Do?

Mentorvention Minute: What Would Midas Do?

Mentorvention Minute: What Would Midas Do?

We are unwrapping a set of aspirational approaches to brainstorming. The next flavor is What Would Midas Do? What would you do if there were no limit to your resources. Not just money, but machinery, space, time, people. Yes, of course, we all face constraints… some real, but some only imagined or self-imposed. At this stage, don’t let anything stop you. We’ll have plenty of time for reality checks… AFTER we come up with the great ideas.

This is the fifth flavor of brain balm, brainstorming ideas to massage your message.

Mentorvention Minute: Stand on the Shoulders of Giants

Mentorvention Minute: Stand on the Shoulders of Giants

We move from practical to aspirational approaches to brainstorming. The first flavor in this package of brain balm is called Stand on the Shoulders of Giants. The point here is that it's okay for your ideas to be based on the other great ideas and inspirations that you see around you every day.

This is the fourth flavor of  brain balm, brainstorming ideas to massage your message.

    Practical Approaches:

    • Heal the Pain
    • The Toothbrush Test
    • Deeper Inside the Box

    Aspirational Approaches:

    • Stand on the Shoulders of Giants

Let me know what you think and share your own ideas: Dave@Mentorvention.com.

Mentorvention Minute: Deeper Inside the Box

Mentorvention Minute: Deeper Inside the Box

Welcome to the fourth episode of It Chose Me. Today we continue the Mentorvention Minute series with our third flavor of Brain Balm, to massage your message. This brainstorming approach is called Deeper Inside the Box. You've heard "think outside the box" but what if your treasures, your best ideas, come from digging deeper INSIDE the box you're already in?
