Decreasing Absenteeism and Its Effects with Meaningful Strategies

Decreasing Absenteeism and Its Effects with Meaningful Strategies

This edWeb podcast is sponsored by Panorama Education.
The edLeader Panel recording can be accessed here,

Absenteeism is more than just not being present in school. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Long-term effects include the major declines in math and reading scores we’ve been hearing about post-COVID. In fact, the White House released figures showing the link between absenteeism and test scores is “large enough to account for 16-27 percent of the overall test score declines in math, and 36-45 percent of the declines in reading.”

So how do schools turn the tide and ensure students are in school, consistently, where they can learn? Join us to hear how Boston Public Schools and the Utah Board of Education are leveraging MTSS to understand and address attendance barriers. Plus, learn attendance-specific strategies from our Playbook partner, Attendance Works. You learn how to decrease absenteeism with these strategies:

    • Make school a place where students want to be by acting on student voice data
    • Use up-to-date data to identify chronic absenteeism and intervene early
    • Establish supports, including family connections, to stave future absenteeism
    • Implement learning recovery measures to reverse the effects of absenteeism

This edWeb podcast is of interest to K-12 teachers, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders.

Exploring Airway Health and Speech Therapy Connections with Dr. Shereen Lim

Exploring Airway Health and Speech Therapy Connections with Dr. Shereen Lim

Prepare to unravel the mysteries of airway health as we journey into the realm of healthy sleep and jaw development with our distinguished guest, Dr. Shereen Lim, a dentist specializing in this unique field. We’ll shine a light on intriguing topics such as the impact of breastfeeding on muscle development and airway health, and the significance of early intervention. Harnessing Dr. Lim’s expertise, we’ll venture into discussions about common problems like breastfeeding issues, reflux symptoms, swallowing challenges, and speech troubles, and how they’re linked to airway health and tongue ties.

Discover the significant role that tongue positioning plays in neural transmission to the brain, guided by Dr. Lim’s insight. As we continue along this investigative journey, we’ll explore the potential risks associated with overlooking these problems, highlighting the importance of early intervention before they become a lifelong struggle.

But that’s not all, we’ll also be discussing the myomunchee appliance and its role in promoting lip seal and more normal swallowing patterns. These concepts are not just related to speech development, but can also help those grappling with thumb-sucking and posture issues. Also, Dr. Lim will be sharing valuable resources such as her book, “Breathe, Sleep, Thrive” and her professionals-only Facebook group “Airway Health 4 Kids”. Join us for this enlightening episode and gain an in-depth understanding of the significance of airway health and its far-reaching effects on both infants and adults.

If you need guidance on building rapport with older speech kids, how understanding their reading fluency and comprehension levels impact all facets of their learning readiness, or how to help these students create their own speech therapy goals, this episode is for you.

Emotional & Sensory Regulation - Strategies to Calm Down

Emotional & Sensory Regulation - Strategies to Calm Down

✔  Why it's important to teach and understand emotions
✔  Why it's important to teach and understand emotional regulation and sensory regulation
✔  Understanding our own sensory profile
✔  Understanding our kids' sensory profiles
    ✔  Explosive meltdowns vs shutdowns
✔  Tools & strategies to calm down and therefore stay calm and regulated

    Managing Meltdowns:
✔  Don’t be telling someone that’s not calm to calm down - it won’t end well ✔  Limit talking, questions, demands till another time of day when they are better regulated
✔  Someone in meltdown mode - silent or explosive - is not capable of reasoning or processing. They are maxed out and you talking will be adding to their overwhelm not helping
✔  Meltdowns - not the time for discussions about behaviour or for punishing/discipline - save talking through for later (often hours later)
✔  Learn strategies that work with you & each child (they’ll be different) and have them ready to go when a meltdown happens - meltdowns aren’t the time to test (unless working with a new child)
✔  Ultimately we want our kids to take control & responsibility for staying regulated - teach them rather than always doing it for them (talk through the process - this can take years)
✔  Pick your battles - if your kid keeps calm/regulated by having 4 weetbix at 5pm right before dinner… What are you going to do? What’s more important?
