Brea Grant & jarrett hill Did What Had to Be Done

For week two of the MaxFunDrive, fellow MaxFun hosts Brea Grant and jarrett hill each share a tiny victory about doing what needed to be done. These are (tiny) tales of growth, grit and perseverance.

The Maximum Fun Drive occurs just two weeks out of the year, and it’s when we ask our listeners to support the shows they love. Tiny Victories, like all shows on the network, are mostly listener-supported. And there are lots of great reasons to join now, because memberships come with goodies. Just $5.00 a month unlocks all the bonus content each of the network’s shows create. Please visit MaximumFun.org/join.

Do YOU have a tiny victory to share?

Call the Tiny Victories Hotline: (323) 285-1675

We want folks to share their tiny victories on our hotline because, frankly, we’ll assume we’re just talking into the void every week and nothing matters. Prove us wrong. Did you finally do that thing you were putting off? Tiny victory! Reconnect with someone you haven’t been in touch with for ages? Victory! We only ask that you try to keep messages to under a minute so we’re able to play it on the show.

If you prefer, you can record a tiny victory on your phone and then email us the audio.

Episode 173: Mommy Issues: 'Sleepwalkers' (1992)/'Torn Hearts' (2022)

Episode 173: Mommy Issues: 'Sleepwalkers' (1992)/'Torn Hearts' (2022)

It is one of those shows this week. Two hosts called in sick. Thankfully, there was a backup in place. We begin the episode by talking about New Orleans and The Overlook Film Festival. Anne Rice, witches, vampires, and a Brooklyn gorilla are all a part of the discussion. We also wonder why animal actors have been so overlooked despite their hefty contributions.

Brea Grant is an amazing part of genre film. She has written, directed, and starred in some amazing movies. Her latest work teams her with Katey Sagal. Sagal has been an industry mainstay for a while now. She constantly does great work, but never seems to get the credit she deserves. Both show off their immense talents in Torn Hearts, a thriller about never meeting your heroes.

Much of Grant's work has focused on what women have to deal with and this release is no different. Written by Rachel Koller Croft, the plot follows a country music duo who are trying to make it big in Nashville. When they have the chance to meet their idol, they jump at it. Things do not go quite as planned in a twist filled story that tackles the patriarchy, age,  and the country music industry.

Is there anything Stephen King cannot do? Of course, he has written numerous books and short stories, but he has also been a director and acted. Sleepwalkers was the first feature film written by the horror icon. It is about a mother and son who are also shapeshifters that feed on virgins(?) and have sex with each other in their spare time.

Cat lovers will probably get a kick out it and it is a precursor to one of the most popular sub genres in modern porn, but does it have anything for horror fans? We agreed that it was inconsistent - and we even thought so for the same reasons - but we still each got something different out of Sleepwalkers. It takes a special kind of disorganized to have noticeable flaws that people find in almost opposite ways.

Episode 108: Women in Horror Month Special

Episode 108: Women in Horror Month Special

The streak is over! After over one year, Blake finally misses a show. The good thing is Danny is back. Plus he and Nathaniel are joined by horror movie writer Regina Chavez to fill Blake's horror shoes. February is Women in Horror Month and the makeshift trio talk about some of the genre's most important females.

The show starts with a talk about the future of streaming. Mission: Impossible 7 and A Quiet Place 2 will be going to the new Paramount streaming network 45 days after their theatrical debut. Is there a point in seeing them in theaters? Are theaters on their way out? Have streaming networks gone too far? And what the heck is going on with Dune?

Prevenge is one of the most unique slashers on Shudder. The movie is about a pregnant woman on a killing spree. Danny, Nathaniel, and Regina talk about the dead pan humor of the movie, how well it managed to get the tension across, and if they felt sympathy for the lead character.

The main segment this week is about Women in Horror. The three talk about the importance of Final Girls in horror, their favorite women in horror, and some of the best female led horror movies.

The Exciting Conclusion of Switchblade Sisters

The Exciting Conclusion of Switchblade Sisters

Well, we did it. It’s the final episode of Switchblade Sisters. Instead of doing a traditional show, April invited Katie Walsh, Drea Clark, and producer Casey O’Brien to discuss the making of Switchblade Sisters. We listen to messages from listeners and past guests and share our stories from the history of the podcast. We laugh, we cry, and Drea says “connective thread” at least 300 times. Thank you to everyone who listened and supported us. We will miss you. The episodes will stay up forever. So if you ever need any filmmaking advice, or maybe some assurance to follow your dreams, the show will always be there.

Keep up with April Wolfe on her Twitter. And give Drea Clark and Katie Walsh a follow, too.

Episode 89: Brea Grant Interview & the evil rich

Episode 89: Brea Grant Interview & the evil rich

Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel come from humble beginnings. So it only make sense that they would not care for rich people. Especially, the evil ones. This week the three talk about arguably the worst villain in horror.

The trials and tribulations of AMC continue. Naturally, the trio are there to talk about it. They also talk about the new Monster Hunter trailer and how excited they are to see it.

This week's What You Need to Know is Something of a throwback. The guys talk about the death of gothic horror movies. The three try to define what gothic horror is, figure out why it went away, and wonder if it will ever come back.

Brea Grant has been a popular name on the festival circuit. She has one awards for her writing while also directing and starring in some of the best genre movies of the year. She recently spoke with AIPT about her work.

This week's main topic is about evil rich people. Is there a greater villain in (the world) movies? What is the appeal of rich villains? And why do we hate them so much?

‘May’ with ’12 Hour Shift’ Director Brea Grant

‘May’ with ’12 Hour Shift’ Director Brea Grant

It is the return of one of our all-time favorite guests; writer, actor, director, and ‘Reading Glasses’ host, Brea Grant. She’s on the show this week to talk about 2002’s May, a movie described by April Wolfe as a spiritual prequel to Brea’s latest film, 12 Hour Shift. Brea discusses expediting the exposition in her film, Lucky, and how she pitched it by describing one specific scene; a wife wakes up to find a murderer in her house. She wakes her husband who says, “Of course he’s here, that’s the man that tries to kill us everyday.”

May and 12 Hour Shift also happen to share the same lead actress, Angela Bettis. Brea describes what a dream she was to work with, and how she even helped the crew wrap the set on the final night of shooting. Brea talks about the expressiveness of the human face, and how one DP on the set of Heroes showed her how much her face takes up the screen, changing her acting forever. And lastly, Brea describes how David Arquette brought a donkey to set to raise spirits, and it did just that!

Please consider financially supporting our show by becoming a Maximum Fun member at Maximumfun.org/join

You can watch 12 Hour Shift on October 2nd.

If you haven’t seen May yet – it’s great!

With April Wolfe and Brea Grant.
