Ep 15: Milk Munchies : The Unfiltered Truth About Baby Feeding

Breastfeeding is a topic that resonates with many - expectant mothers, new moms, and even those who have been through the journey before. It's an experience filled with joy but not without its challenges. In this interview, we'll explore some key insights from breastfeeding expert Amy Kanzillo as she shares her wisdom on navigating the complex world of lactation. Here are some key takeaways:
    1. Embrace your community - Facebook groups or local meetups provide support networks filled with information.
    2. Prepare ahead of time – just as athletes train before their big day, expecting moms should begin preparations for breastfeeding months prior.
    3. Expect some hiccups along the way – despite careful planning, unexpected issues may arise which is completely normal!
    4. Be aware of medication effects on breastfeeding - resources such as Dr Thomas Hale’s book categorize drugs by levels so you can check potential impacts on nursing.
    5. Maintain a balanced diet - barring alcohol/drugs, no food restrictions exist unless there's an immediate family history of allergies (like peanut allergy).
    6. Milk supply isn't solely reliant on food intake – moving milk through frequent feedings or implementing pumping plans often helps increase supply more effectively.
    .
    ACTION PLAN
    1. Support system: Surround yourself with supportive people who understand the importance of breastfeeding & can offer emotional support or help.

    2. Reliable resources: Seek out credible sources of information on breastfeeding such as lactation consultants, healthcare providers, or reputable online platforms.

    3. Regular check-ups: Keep up with regular pediatrician visits to monitor your baby’s growth and development and ensure they are getting enough nutrition from breastfeeding.

    4. Mindset matters: Approach breastfeeding with an open mind knowing that it may not always be easy but it's worth persevering through challenges for the benefits it offers mom & baby.

    5. Healthy diet: Maintain a balanced diet without strict food restrictions unless there is an immediate family history of allergies (like peanut allergy).

    6. Increase milk supply naturally by feeding more often or implementing a pumping plan rather than relying solely on certain foods believed to boost supply.

"Reclaiming My Resources" Black Breastfeeding Week 2021

"Reclaiming My Resources" Black Breastfeeding Week 2021

It's the 9th year of Black Breastfeeding Week. Black Breastfeeding Week aims to end the gaping racial disparity in breastfeeding rates while also encouraging diversity in the lactation field.

Kimberly Seals Allers, co-founder of Black Breastfeeding Week, said “We must end the dangerous conversation of breastfeeding as a 'choice' without a deeper discussion as to how Black women's choices are shaped by their circumstances.”

On This episode Kendra share why Black Breastfeeding Week is important to her.

Caring for the Community: Dr. Kim Broomfield-Massey

Community Psychologist, evaluator, facilitator, and caretaker, Dr. Kim Broomfield-Massey loves her clients and you will love her to. She describes herself as a caretaker. That is not something you hear very often among evaluators.  Like me, Kim wanted to be a clinician, but discovered Community Psychology.  It was a personal decision.

The information people share is not just numbers. It reflects the lived experience of community members. As Kim says, "We are giving voice to what people have entrusted to us."
Kim seeks first to understand the needs and the culture of the community and organizations she works with.

Kim is an expert in maternal and child health and an advocate for breastfeeding moms, especially among black and brown communities.  She shares her work with the Center for Black Women's Wellness and it's a great example of centering the community's voices. This work has led Kim to be a leader with the US Breastfeeding Committee. Kim also has a new project, Stepping Up, that connects people in jail who are in need of mental health treatment. It's an initiative that seeks to change policies around mental health to create a continuum of care.

Thanks for listening! If you are a community leader and are struggling to use your community data, I have a free new mini-course for you. It will help you learn how to better tell your nonprofit or community story. Grab it here.
