Why Body Image Concerns Are Not Just a "Teenage Problem": Katie Thompson

Along these lines, Naomi and Katie also discuss how much our culture pressures us to not allow our bodies to change. "Walk Gently and Speak Kindly" Thoughts on Single Motherhood—with Tammica Dowd

"Walk Gently and Speak Kindly" Thoughts on Single Motherhood—with Tammica Dowd

What got you through the hardships of your childhood?

When Tammica Dowd was young and living in a group home, at times she’d be locked in a closet by a counselor. In order to keep her mind strong and pass time, she envisioned what she wanted for her future.

    -Graduate high school.

    -Marry her dream guy.

-Have five children who’d never go through what she went through.

    -Go to Maui.

    -Win a Grammy.

All her goals but one were achieved! (But don’t count her out for that Grammy.)

She did not see divorce coming.

Now, as a single mother of five young children, she has advice and experience to share, including how helping her children through life events has allowed for personal healing.

Sometimes healing comes with helping someone through the experience that caused our trauma.

Join me and Tammica Dowd, as she speaks to the shame of single motherhood.

On This episode Kendra share why Black Breastfeeding Week is important to her.

Incarceration During Pregnancy and Postpartum with Miyhosi Benton of the Women & Justice Project

For the final episode of the season, Nyssa's Mia Clarke speaks to Miyhosi Benton, senior associate with New York City's Women & Justice Project, a non-profit organization that advances the leadership and narrative power of women directly impacted by incarceration to transform the criminal justice system. Miyhosi experienced pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum during her period of incarceration and was illegally shackled despite a 2009 law designed to protect women from this barbaric practice. Miyhosi was a leader in the successful campaign to pass the 2015 Anti-Shackling law banning the shackling of incarcerated pregnant women in New York State, the most progressive law of its kind in the nation.
